Dev Tracker - Discussion
They would be stupid not to introduce new models. People who were on the fence or not interested in swapping would be enticed to change up their look, and if it's a paid feature as expected, that's free money for SE. It costs them practically nothing to add blue/red haired/tattoo faced models for prior who want to look "rad" in a 25 year old game, so SE would be leaving potential money on the table by not going the extra mile and making new models
They would be stupid
But can they add something like that without breaking the game increasing the amount of data overhead for multiple new characters elements Or who knows that value is a hard stop at 8 for all races. It is certainly possible to add a new face, the model loading code is relatively straightforward in the client and the changes on server are not particularly complicated either.
However, I think they would probably balk at editing the character creation menus ingame. Those are quite old and they most likely do not have anyone capable of changing them. It's possible they would add new faces and make them paid only, but I expect they're not going to at all. I hadn’t even considered the idea of new faces and it sounds like a great idea for pushing people into actually selecting the race change options that might otherwise already like their character race.

I wish all of the bald humes didn't look like they got hit in the face with a shovel. I assume the possibility of something else breaking downstream if they added new models is the reason why they announced it so far in advance, so they'd have appropriate time to sanity/stress test it over the course of a few months. I mean, if what Thorny is saying is true, the process for new model creation can't be that complicated. Now maybe the interface is super dated and someone has to take time to learn how it all works. Wouldn't you be getting that time/cost back hundredfold from people who want to change up their look? People with bad reputations get to instantly start over via name change/server swap and race change. Literally tens of thousands to be made, then you throw in the FFXI lifers who are tired of being whatever race. Literally printing money here. Makes no sense to make race change if they're not pairing it with at least a couple new models For me personally, it doesn't have to be new faces, necessarily, it could just be new hair colors and new haircuts? ...but any and all changes are welcome.
Shoot, I'd even love to see new Galka haircuts that are not bald or flat-top. Also Elvans could use a modern look. Also, female haircuts that don't look like my grandmother would be awesome. I want a Dreadlock-Joey hairstyle, Rastafarian Galka, Mansion Marley.
Some of the hairstyles in XI.. need deleting.
Not adjusting, or new ones. Just deleting. Looking at you, Mullet Elvaan. While I would love new styles, I doubt it.
It would be nice if they unlocked the unique faces from Campaign NPCs like Elivira/Klara. But given there is not an equal amount of those per race, I'm sure they will end up like the Campaign WS and be left out. ![]() ![]() I mean they absolutely could just pick 10 random faces exclusive to NPCs (two per race) and call them *new*and allow players to purchase the new models. $$$$$$$

Can we get naked mithras who act like wifeys, but are actually 40+ year old dudes living in a basement? I'd pay good money SE.
If they added new styles (which shouldnt be that hard if they use the models already in game), they'd make so much money.
So who knows We need cids face model

I am reminded that in TVR that Mithra that's actually a Dvergr in disguise had unique facial features, eye color, and hair color. As did Goreizu-Horeizu.
There's clearly something they could implement with that regard, but I do wonder how they'd go about letting us actually switch. New hairstyles isn't going to happen. That's a lot to ask because they would need to hire high quality people, or it would be vandalism of the look of the game.
Using NPC head models is a bad idea too and I don't think real devs would do that, it ruins the fact that the NPC is a known and unique entity. One of the problems also with doing something like this is clipping issues, since those head models were never designed with headgear in mind. Just recolors is really all I would want, it's easy to do and adds variety that makes a big difference. The game currently offers 2 color variations for each head model, just add one more color variation or face markings/tattoo. ![]() Machine translation but seems pretty decent. 1,650 yen is about 11.50 USD/10 EUR/8.70 GBP Edit: Preview image they showed of the race change process: ![]() Weird. I would not have expected this to be a thing you do inside FFXI proper; hijacking the character generation process and doing it from login menu would have made more sense. Guess they were worried about the kind of trouble they could cause if they touched that?
Well, character creation is handled through FFXI proper so it probably makes more sense to do it this way. This is how Fantasias are handled in XIV as well.
Pleasantly surprised by the price, tbh. I thought it'd be at least $18 if not more. It's always amazed and impressed ...and confused me, how the character creation visuals (or race change UI, here) never seems to accurately reflect the FACE in game! Take a look at 1A (top-left) when choosing a character and 1A when actually in game:
![]() ![]() I used to have a google doc of all of the faces, but I can't find it right now. Why SE? Why are you like this? |
