Installiing FFXI with Windows 10
I've been trying for the past dat or so to get XI/pol to work and the most I can get is it loaded but then viewer crashes. Can XI not run with windows 10?
It can just have change some of the default settings
Where are the default settings.

You need to use this version of Playonline, I believe:

As for the OP: What's crashing? Vanilla XI? Where is it crashing? Have you tried updating the GPU's drivers? Right click the start button and click programs and features. Click "Turn Windows features on or off". Under legacy features, make sure the direct play box is checked.
Have you turned on DirectPlay?
Control panel > Programs > Programs and Features(Turn Windows features on or off) > Legacy Components / DirectPlay(Check box). Vanilla PlayOnline Viewer. It starts to load but crashes. I've download the files from the official site. I've turned on the Legacy thing in the programs, restarted, and it still crashes.
Try looking in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
and see what error is causing it. Have you tried updating your video drivers?
I'll have to ask him. Outside of updating the drivers is there anything else that could be the problem.
Yes video drivers are updated.
So I guess there's no further suggestions? BF just screwed us out of XI by upgrading to Windows 10?
In all honesty, try launching through the latest version of Windower, even if you don't want to use any addons.
The new Win 10 Creators Update caused a whole host of issues, which might possibly be affecting vanilla FFXI as well. Windower is being updated to address these problems, so it's worth a shot, if nothing else. Isn't windower having issues as well? Or did they fix those? I've been trying for the past few days to get this to work >.<
There are a few outstanding issues, but most stuff should be fixed now.
Can try that.

If Vanilla is crashing then it has nothing to do with Windower. It sounds like either your GPU drivers need to be changed or there's something wrong in your settings. Run the FFXICONFIG for the region you are starting and make sure your settings are within range. Does it give you a "failed to initialize direct3d" error? Yeah, ignore basically all of that.
Off topic.
It will lag. Its not even worth the effort to install it on a w10 machine. On my windows 10 laptops i run it on a vmware with w7. You will only really notice the difference when geomancers are present. Geomancers should always be present if youre playing the game right. On topic. i always installed it from steam and never had a problem. OmniKroe said: » Off topic. It will lag. Its not even worth the effort to install it on a w10 machine. On topic. i always installed it from steam and never had a problem. Mine works on Windows 10 with no issues. Though I think it might of been an upgrade from Windows 7. No lag at all. For a clean install you might need several run time files from an older visual basic/direct x collection. I know I needed to grab a bunch of things to make the old school unreal editor to work. For those who can't get windower to work. I heard from a friend that downloading and running Ashita actually installs/registers said files. After doing that he was able to run windower on windows 10. I ended up getting to work. The upgrade windows reset the BIOS and I had to reinstall the graphics card. Long run, I got it back up ad running. So much happier now ad the graphics are better!
