I was having problems login in to one of my chars using windower and wanted to verifiy it was a problem with windower and not the char i launched vanilla pol and attempted to log in and then crashed on the loading screen just like windower...

Now i can not get ffxi to launch using windower it crashes at the transfer from pol to ffxi. so far i have tried:
  • Reboot PC

  • Check Files POL and FFXI

  • Reinstall Windower

  • Reinstall POL and FFXI

  • Verify everything is running as admin/right click and run as admin

Nothing has worked :( any advise would be appreciated

Resolved: Did windows 10 Reset(saved personal files). Reinstalled FFXI and now launches properly with windower... Just need to get everything on my pc back in order now.

Do a system restore to a point before your first issue.

Also see the link at the current bottom of this thread:

http://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/50090/crash-before-playonline#3208062

and read parts of this thread:

http://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/49962/crash-from-pol-to-xi-resolved#3195351

Basically if a system restore doesn't fix it, reinstall windows and game, Windows 8/8.1/10 is/are dumb.

This may sound stupid but have you tried running either as Administrator? I've had the same problem as you before and that's all it took for me, not sure if ur problem is the same or not but can't hurt to give it a try.

Just curious, as shortly after you posted this another had the same issue. Did you try the system restore point? Also if you're feeling froggy and competant enough to reinstall an OS, I play my game in a Windows 7 VM, runs rather well and eliminates a lot of issues.

I did not have a recent restore point was concerned i would not know what all was missing :x with Windows 10 Reset you get a list of uninstalled programs. I have not had any problems playin on windows 10 until i opened vanilla...although i guess the problem i had that caused me to open vanilla counts, i see it as a minor problem although now i will never know what the cause was. now i know i should never open vanilla cuz it just leads to rocky road :}

What all do you pass to the VM? or does ffxi not require hardware to be passed though.

It doesn't require hardware to be passed through. But I do assign a controller to it.

I'd have just done a restore point, much better than "reseting."

I'm not getting any crashes when zoning--my first guess would be is it's a plugin causing it. I'm running Autoexec, Binder, DelayMeNot, Sandbox, and Timers. Try unloading your plugins and see if that fixes it, if so you can narrow it down to see exactly which one is the culprit and file a bug report.

Done that, and used both Ashita and windower and it happens on both, wasnt happening a week ago :/

This happened to me earlier in the week. I can 100% confirm the issue is with the resolution discrepancy between windower settings and vanilla. I had accidentally launched vanilla instead of windower and got the "direct3d" error. I had thought Windows had updated in the background, but after troubleshooting and talking to jetackuu, it was neither.

Basically, the way to fix this is to reset your ffxi settings from the config utility screen. Remove full screen. Change the resolution to something reasonable, not 512 x 512. Make sure that registry editor has the same files settings as ffxI, and then relaunch vanilla. It should work, but that won't immediately fix windower. After troubleshooting this for about an hour, I realized it was too much of a headache top try to match windower settings to vanilla in order to get the game to launch, so I did an automatic system restore as jet mentioned.

It was from before Christmas but it worked and everything resorted back to normal. Again the issue lies with opening vanilla after changing the games settings in windower. The game doesn't know how to reload the windower settings after the vanilla load, so it's a huge pain in the *** to get it working. Reinstalling everything works but that's a lot of work.

What about vanilla? If vanilla works, try running FFXIConfig, check for anything out of the ordinary. Otherwise it's probably a registry setting like Buukki says. Here's mine, for comparison:
