Found this over at Reddit, thought it was very cool.

Basically Suteru on Asura exported some of the zone models, imported them to Unity and got them working in a VR program called VR chat.

The future is awesome :)

Game has firstperson view already, could use that too? I mean not as in replacement for VR, but put that view into VR instead of porting like this.

This sort of RPG experience is what will get me to dive into VR. Hope it comes someday.

Wouldn't be able to get camera control to the headset. And you wouldn't get the 3D effect. And mainly, modern VR needs to run at 90FPS, and FFXI's engine can't really run that smoothly. So porting it was the easier option.

I'm not sure I'd want to do this without the 3D effect, the effect on scale is quite astounding.


e: Now that I think about it, the headsets require DX11, and the game isn't even DX9.

It's natively capped near 30 fps. But addons can take that to near 60fps, giving the game a much smoother appearance. I do remember that when someone was first messing with this, you could completely uncap fps, and in non-congested areas I would see 100+ fps, but this also made the game act funny.

This is absolutely incredible. I would definitely play FFXI in VR. I would be swinging at enemies, screaming every time I WS, and probably destroying everything in my living room.

FFXI's animations and game timing are in some way tied to the framerate. So when you uncap the FPS it speeds everything up to flee level speeds. This is terrible coding but we can't really change how the game was programmed.

There is a plugin called config which will allow you to cap at 60 or uncap entirely and it appears to link 60fps to the animation and game speed of 30FPS which fixes part of the issue in that when you run 60fps it doesn't change the normal animation or game speed however anytime you dip below that it suffers in the exact opposite way. But playing at 60 FPS is just too nice so I do it anyway and just suffer through the laggy sections.

One of the main reasons I want PSVR is that It's going to support ff14 >.>; That world is already pretty gorgeous, I can't wait to dive into it with VR :Q

I got stuck in TF2 by some wizard, that's when the bonus ducks ran rampant. I still get on occasionally, just no longer with the oculus rift.

I tried the actual game with a head set, Its neat in first person.

The bad thing is you aren't getting the full 3d effect/geometries.

Super old bump, but I'm working on getting these onto the Oculus Quest version of VRChat! I've already got Windurst Walls and Lower Jeuno ported! Silent (who ported Valkurm Dunes and Lufaise to VRChat) helped me a ton with Noesis optimization, so now occlusion culling works.

Did you even read the (necro) post? They are talking about exporting the zones to VRChat and not about playing the game itself in VR, huge difference.

You can enable Stereoscopic 3D SBS mode in game today, but all menus and chat windows are drawn on top and are horribly broken.

Set 0030 to non-zero and ensure that the screen resolution (000, 0001) are identical to the background resolution (0003,0004). Or disable supersamling option in windower if you use it.
Then use something like virtual desktop and enable its 3D SBS mode and be naseous.

The VRChat Zones and Unreal/Unity demos are way, way more impressive, good job!

I see the "'Remapster' Project: HD Maps for FFXI" is a hot topic today too. It's almost as if the young players that remember FFXI and now are professional skilled adults and willing to put in their own skills and effort towards making FFXI better. I like it. I wish they could use these powers officially for the good of FFXI.
