my current setup: wired xbox 360 controller hooked up to my win 10 pc, xinput enabled in pol config, running ffxi through windower4

Is it possible to use xpadder (or other similar software) to bind keystrokes to my gamepad for ffxi? My intention is to bind the f8 key (target nearest mob) to one of the buttons on the controller, but it doesn't work.

Just to see if the xpadder software is working correctly, I mapped the "A" key to one of the buttons, pulled up an empty text file, and pressed that button repeatedly and it added A's to the file (as would be expected). I then went over to my ffxi window, typed /echo and pressed the button on the controller but no A's were added to the chat window.

So the xpadder software seems to work, but not w/in the bounds of the ffxi software. Any suggestions on how to make xpadder work (or another controller mapping software) for ffxi?

I see that it's working for you, but something's not right with my game. I tried with windower full screen, windower windowed, non-windower windowed mode - all the same issue.

In the video I mapped auto-attack and f8 targetting to 2 of the keys. You can see that xpadder registers the button presses, but it doesn't get sent to the ffxi window...

I suggest using Antimicro instead of Xpadder.

I'm not sure the keybinding software is my issue though - upbeat demonstrated that it CAN work. Is there a way to debug what might be blocking ffxi from receiving the signal?

I am binding F8 to the Right Bumper.
I bound "/jump" to the "Xbox Guide" button and I bound "/targetnpc" to the Start button.

First I entered into the FFXI pad config application and I unbound Right Bumper and Start, choosing no action for those buttons (not necessary to do that for the Xbox Guide button)
Then I entered Antimicro, created an "FFXI" called profile and customized those 3 buttons and only those.
Bound F8 to RB.
For /jump and /targetnpc I had to do something more complex.
First I created an Alias on my windower init.txt file, and I associated the actions /jump and /targetnpc to a combination (or single key)
Then I associated that same combination (or single key) into my antimicro profile.

Now all I have to do is to load antimicro at any time (before or after I load game, doesn't matter) and those buttons will work flawlessly.

Xbox guide button doesn't work on my version of xpadder. *sadface*

To map an auto attack button all you need is CTRL + A ..
Look at the commands inside Ffxi.

I'm using vanilla ffxi.. No windower.

So you had intended on the key press to act like a keyboard? Xpadder won't natively inject to Ffxi like that. Use the keys in ffxi's commands list.. Don't forget the CTRL.
Ctrl + h = heal
Ctrl + a = attack
Ctrl + w = weapons skills
CTRL + j = job abilities..

I personally switched ranged attacks to Q which allows RAs to be used with CTRL + Q

Did you watch my video? I mapped CTRL + A to the "back" button (left of the circle xbox guide button).

In the video I showed that pressing CTRL + A auto-attacked the goblin, pressing it again disengaged. I then pressed the "back" button on the controller and nothing happened in game. I even showed the xpadder window to demonstrate that the appropriate button was being highlighted when it was being pressed. But, CTRL + A was not being sent to the ffxi window.

CTRL + A was just to demonstrate that it was not working. The ONLY thing I want to map is the F8 key to the right trigger button (which I also showed in the video was not working).
