The story in missions
By Ramyrez 2015-12-09 09:12:00
The only outlier is SoA, which eventually gets to "Prevent the end of the world", because that's what you do, but only after four chapters of helping out a continent full of *** who don't really want you around anyway. I swear that Teodor genuinely enjoyed hanging out with me at the Mummer's Coalition.
Teodor makes that entire expansion worthwhile.
Distinguished. As. ***.

It was an isolationist country that didn't see visitors(not many at least)for centuries. Then the colonization project starts and here comes a swarm of immigrant adventurers looking for a job, and the locals get mad(also because what you do is considered to bring forth misfortune as they're all superstitious as ***).
Man. I wonder how a Japanese storyteller ever thought of that!?

Arcelia i felt was there for eye-candy Well, I mean...yeah.
I mean, I liked the character design, ffxiwaifu, #bestgirl, etc but there were a few things that made it not really worth hanging around to me. The big thing wasn't even in-game, it was the execution. Many of my friends kinda lost interest and quit because all of the stuff we worked hard for to be ready for SoA was immediately underpowered and obsolete, relics included with absolutely no plan to update them. Then the RME shitstorm happened and Matsui learned that you don't obsolete Relics completely. After the March 2013 update, my LS was pretty much dead. We went from like 15-20 members always online to 4-5 AFKers for some reason and I was only around for friends so that was it for me. :/

I think I may have paid more attention to the mysteries and lore instead of their current events and concerns of the average townsperson.

I think I may have paid more attention to the mysteries and lore instead of their current events and concerns of the average townsperson. Well even in the Midras helm +1 Quest line. There is very clear cut "No leaking of Mid-lands information".
Like Super pressurative on this idea that Adoulin stuff STAYS in Adoulin and not outside.

Random bits I missed or found out about after coming back to re-experience the storylines of XI because I rushed this back in the day:
Masato Kato (The Antiquity/12,000 BC story arc in Chrono Trigger, the entirety of Chrono Cross, some writing contributions to Xenogears) penned the original basic premise of FF11 and Rise of the Zilart. Suddenly, the part where naive, young civilizations are threatened by the long-term effects of a race of ancient *** exploding in everyone's faces has a bit of a precedent. Zilart and Tu'lia? mo' like Zeal and Solaris, amirite. Aldo was totally his pet character (explains ACP where he returned as a freelance writer) but Batman's writing was mostly by another writer.
Yaeko Sato wrote everything regarding Windurst and Kazham, from the enigmas surrounding Karaha-Baruha to the culture and nation-states of the Mithra. Found out she came back to conclude the overarching mystery of Fenrir and that fateful battle in Wings of the Goddess while writing up the setting and story of FFXIV 1.0 at the same time, which is why everything is relatively consistent. Turns out she also wrote the lyrics to Distant Worlds, Forever Today, FFXIV's Answers, and now the ending theme to RoV.
Fake Louverance in Chains of Promathia referred to the "Western Kingdom", a vital participant in his gambit to resurrect Tavnazia to its former glory. With reference to a western city of famed exorcists across the sea back in the Halloween events of 2006, it's clear one writer planted the seeds for Adoulin a decade ago while remaining vague enough for other writers to fill the blanks later. Alexander and Odin are obviously alluded to in Chapter 5 as well, but nothing really gave conclusive evidence that they would build an entire expansion involving the two until the introduction of Limbus half a year later, endgame content introduced to hype us up for the definitely-confirmed-by-then ToAU.
Adding to CoP, being confused about Chains of Promathia is normal. Even its own characters were addled half the time with Tenzen himself fighting you out of desperate confusion. The entire final boss battle is because of one particular character was so fed up with being confused that he basically gave up on existence.
There's a hidden quasi-dating sim element in SoA involving Arciela according to an interview with the lead writer of SoA in an issue of Famitsu. Snagging creep shots of her chest apparently causes the "likability"/bond rating with her to reasonably plummet, but I didn't notice any real changes in dialogue.

The "Thirst for the Ages" questline is the one I remember best and paid the most attention to, since it's all about digging up relics and documents pertaining to mysteries around Adoulin. "The Curious Case of Melvien" was also pretty interesting. Likewise, the Epeolatry quest focused in on one of August's generals, and some RUN AF got into the mysteries of the Strange Apparati.

I just remember doing those cutscenes together with friends and I was like, "wasn't he wearing something else?"
"What are you talking about, Rammie?"
"They must have made a mistake or something."
"No, that's definitely two different guys."
"You're off your rocker."
WELL WHO WAS RIGHT, ***.

Yeah. Would be amusing to party up with Noillurie for that purpose.
Ok, technically there's so many quests and things that technically anything can be considered a "story", an arc that characters go through, but I feel pretty sure that the missions are the main big thing where some writers put their effort into, and ... naturally there's things like opinion, people can have different views, but now that I'm going through all the missions (I still have to finish Wings of the Goddess and Rhapsodies of Vanadiel) I notice how very different they all are. Very different stylistically.
[this is my personal bias, sorry if I offend anyone if I say something in an undignified way)
Nations 1-6: Simple Shadow Lord stuff, no real major conspiracy, just a straight forward narrative, and I'm ok with that.
Bastok: Issues with race and corruption, which are not entirely resolved by the end, but the future is looking brighter
Windurst: Emmm Star Sybil rules over the kingdom, but she's not very confident, but she's got people who trust her, which helps the kingdom in the end???? (sorry, had problems getting the point here)
San d'Oria: ... lack of comunication... the Elvaan are really dense. (HEY, I'm an Elvaan and a San d'Orian! This was dumb!)
Rise of the Zilart: sort of a continuation of the Shadow Lord story. I didn't like a lot of stuff here, but I felt like it was an okay continuation
Chains of Promathia: So mysterious and fascinating, but by the end I was just scratching my head, confused who sided with who, asking myself "hey guys.... this all started with Bahamut and those weird Promyvion dungeons, right?"). Eh, at least I liked Prishe and ulmia, that's for sure.
Treasures of Aht Uhrgan: Much simpler.... I got the jist of everything, and while I did not love it, I felt perfectly ok with the story.
Wings of the Goddess: Uhhhhhhhhh what? There's Cait Sith and Lilisette, and time travel too and..... maybe it'll make sense to me later, but for now it's just weird.
Seekers of Adoulin: This one was sort of frustrating and confusing to me, but by the end I got the deal and liked it.
Rhapsodies of Vana'diel: Ok, perhaps normally I'd judge, but this is definitely the final story in FFXI, and I feel like it hits some very great notes as a final storyline, even managing to motivate me to go through all the other story missions.
Eh basically I write this wondering how people feel about the storylines that were delivered in the game. HOPEFULLY WITHOUT SPOILERS, even if I beat almost all these missions... ya know.
