That's why I refuse to grow things I don't like to eat. They're just taking up space that could be used for farming things like bacon.

Only hippies let their grass grow that long!

But nice garden. Kind of jelly since I don't have a place to grow one of my own, and the property manager said "FU!" to using the empty space that looks like utter ***to start a garden.
Condo? Talk to a board member. Otherwise, grab some pots!
Condos are at least lenient and allow the potting of plants.

The Property Owner (Boardwalk Properties) Tend to leave these kinds of decisions up to the property managers. I'd try something on my balcony, but it would be overly generous to call it "safe".

Time for another 2 week update!

I never knew Zucchini could grow so big (thats a 4x8 planter box)! Also, hops cones, before they start to resemble actual cones look very similar to cannibals buds you can sorta see this in the second picture.

NIK! Start thinking about what kind of beer you want me to brew!

I need things to plant, but that's my garden box. Parts of it get shade at various spots over the day because of the bush next to it. I didn't want to sacrifice my sunny soaked lawn in the back by placing a clunky garden in the middle. On the right I planted zucchini, on the left I think is spinach and elsewhere there is broccoli and jalapenos. I checked the sun pattern and the shade loving stuff (broc and spinach) is in the shady areas.

So from L-R I have Centenial, Chinook, Nugget, and Zeus (CTZ). The Chinook is so big that it's overtaking the poll for nugget. I'll run twine to the house window I've taken the picture from this weekend.

Additionally, I hate grass, well I love looking at it, but I hate growing it. I have bare spots galore in my yard and sometimes when I seed, it works and sometimes it don't. Stupid grass! Advice please.

Growing grass the legal kind is about balancing the pH levels of the soil with the right fertilizers and knowing what type of grass will grown in said soil.

If you have acidic soil you use agricultural lime to balance the ph.

Yeah but how do I get a good reading on soil PH? I bought a analog scale (think a cooking thermometer with a gauge on it) but since i know nothing about soil testing how many times do I need to stick the tester into the ground? Do I grid out the lawn taking a reading every 2 feet apart and map it out? then how much do I put down?

We've already had 2 harvests of radishes, strawberries, green onions, lettuce, asparagus, bell peppers, and just did our first of tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, eggplant, and we'll have about 200 more tomatoes in about a week. This hot weather really increased our watering needs, but holy crap the veggies love it.

Almost any kind of squash does that. You should see cabbages.

Gotta start somewhere!

Any of the annuals, we start from seed in January/February in the greenhouse. If you can do it that way, you'll get your veggies much earlier in the season and have time to replant sometimes.

Zucchini plants really never stop growing, I have seen them get over 12' long.

Then there are the zucchinis themselves. Pick them at finger sized with the flowers still attached and stiff. That way you avoid letting them grow larger.

The three larger sizes: Martial aid, weapon grade, nautical grade.

Hops and marijuana are closely related. Close enough to graft.

The soil has to be damp for a PH tester to read. Other than that I have no idea about your yard or your particular instrument.

Picked my first one on Sunday, felt really proud and accomplished. Then went out yesterday to prune some of there plant back so other plants could grow and found 2 more ready to pick that seemingly doubled their size from 5 to 10ish inches in 24 hours....

Oh god, what have I done?

I haven't even gotten around to eating that first one yet.

I picked 2 squashes that are the size of watermellons yesterday. The hot weather is paying off.

I do believe there is an official "leave a zucchini on someone's porch" day.

You might have to listen to NPR to find out what day it is. But considering your political bent that might get you heated enough to steam the zucchinis right there.

I am serious, pick them when they are finger sized with the flowers still attached and stiff. Great in salads or lightly steamed.

If the flowers are limp give them one more day but not one moment more.

I recommend golden zucchini. I think they taste better but that's beside the point. Its WAY harder for the goldens to hide under a leaf till they get big enough to hollow out for a dugout canoe. That's the nautical grade.

Jeez Chanti, I have like listened to NPR before you know, my brain doesn't just short circuit when exposed to the liberal machine.

However there's some local radio show on the weekends in Worcester with an guy in his 90s that gives great gardening advice.

Too late Google tells me its Saturday!

In other news I had half of one for dinner tonight, sauteed. It was really quite good!

2.5 week update! I have some ripe hops but the bulk of them aren't ready to be picked yet.

Nik! I told you to start thinking about beer you want. You have failed me for the last time!

Almost a dozen zucs so far.

Cool beans buds!

As to the zukes, they can be sliced, blanched, frozen on cookie sheets, and then bagged and left in the freezer for months.

Bring some lightly salted water to a boil. Give the sliced zukes 30 - 60 seconds in it, drain.

Single layer on the cookie sheets to freeze BTW.

Behold the yield on my chinook vine. 2+ oz of picked, dried, and stored hops, a small handful of the other varieties which make for a wonderful steak rub.

Nik, you failed on giving me a beer style to brew this weekend (you had one job), so you're gonna get what you get. Anyone else want in on this wonderful bounty? I feel compelled to share. Bonus points to those who can figure out a cost effective way to ship cold beer across the country (yes it's better if stays cold).
