if you are going to thoroughly and completely focus on style over substance like it appears they did, they made their bed and have to sleep in it. you can try to polish a turd, but it is still a turd.

I joke about the game, but saying the game should only cost ~20 dollars (even if you joke about 18.86) is pretty bad. It shouldn't be 60 dollars, but when I look at the game I just think back to Assassin's Creed Unity, and the girl who spent 2 years researching and building the Notre Dame in game, only to have the game bomb and get ripped apart by critics and fans (for good reason).

I don't like seeing hard work to make something that detailed go to waste. From the screenshots you see she obviously had a lot of passion for what she did.

Yea yea, "it's only graphics!", but someone worked on those, especially high detailed passion projects like the Notre Dame in Unity that Caroline Miousse made, that unfortunately ended up being in a game like Unity.

I don't think they went into it with that goal. I think they had an idea of what they wanted, but mismanaged their priorities. It's not like the art team was putting too much effort into making the city, instead of writing the story. The art team doesn't write the story.

I understand that, and well, sucks to be them. making slick visuals to the exclusion of all else doesn't cut it in video games. a game that is hamstrung by less than glorious visuals but has the gameplay/story/etc will still be lauded. a game that has the best visuals ever but ***for gameplay/story/etc will be panned, and rightly so. does it detract from the work the artists put in? no, because no one has been really saying anything less than "the visuals are fantastic", the problem is that you need a helluva lot more than pretty graphics for a game to be worth the cost of entry.

So after playing it, here's my take:

+Excellent visuals, if not for some strange design decisions
+Excellent storytelling and cinematic quality
+The gunplay is responsive, every weapon feels different and is a joy to use
+The characters are varied and likable
+Excellent use of historical references and science fiction to create a very compelling setting

-Letterbox display format is jarring and ugly
-Quick Time Events are far too numerous; they're used for almost everything and cause gameplay to sometimes feel disjointed
-Game is extremely easy, even on the highest difficulty
-While the cinematics are of substantial quality, there's too many of them in my honest opinion
-As has been said by many others before, the game is too short. I finished it in 7 hours and I don't feel like I skipped or sped through any of it
-Coincides with the previous point, but worthy of its own mention. The ending is blatantly set up to shill DLC or a sequel and baits you into an exciting climax to the story before ending abruptly.

Overall, this game is tragic. Not because it's bad from a gameplay or storytelling standpoint, but because of how it's been presented. Not only is the developer remarkably inadequate at social and PR skills, but their vision has marred what could have been a remarkable game. I enjoyed playing it, despite its drawbacks, but there wasn't enough game to play or enough of a resolution to the story for me to recommend that anyone go out and pay 60 US dollars to experience it. As before, I suggest renting (as I did) or borrowing from a friend. You'll enjoy the time you spend with the game, but don't expect it to be the most compelling thing you slide into a games console this year. Hopefully the sequel, if there is one, improved on the faults; the result would be an extraordinary experience for this particular genre that game devs often overlook these days.
