If someone overbids, do you...
I'd probably keep the money unless it was someone who i knew.
(I've been screwed out of lots of gil (my mistake on almost all times) and have never been refunded.) I mostly likely if asked would give the excess gil back, but if no one asks, I then assume hey, it's their loss, I make a few gil out of it. I've made mistakes like that in the past a few times, but for the most part, I've never really asked for the excess back, its a way to learn a lesson, kinda like in real life.
Depends entirely on their attitude and how they approach me, really.
Can range from refund to *** you. Honestly, only if they contacted me ingame and if they were polite would I give it back. Karma is a two-way street, I'd rather be nice to them, because you never know if someone could end up helping you in the long run so long as you leave a good impression.
I'd probably keep it unless it was someone I knew or they seemed really nice and/or caught me in a good mood.
Even if it was someone I disliked, I would give the gil back. I believe that mistakes happen and as long as they learn from that mistake, they shouldn't have to suffer from it.
I asked the question because I, while rushing, accidentally bought a scroll of Utsusemi: Ni on my brother's girlfriend's character for 1 mil instead of 100k (which I reimbursed her). Fortunately, the dude who sold it sent the 900k back to her. I couldn't send him a tell to say thanks, so I just looked up his recent purchases and sent him some medicines he buys regularly.
I've noticed nobody went with C, which I can say I've seen happen once, long time ago when a two friends of mine who didn't know each other were in this situation. Going by people's responses, I'd say you got a 50/50 chance of getting your money back if you screw up. Sylph.Jeanpaul said: » So, let's say you list some item on AH for 100k, and someone accidentally buys it for 1 million. What would you do? A) Keep the money, that's their problem B) Return the excess money C) Give them some stuff you were going to sell of approximate value to the amount they over-payed B. One time stumbling sandals were bought for 1M instead of intented 100k, thankfully the player was understanding and gave back the 900k. Been on both sides of this kind of thing and thankfully excess was returned both times. :3 Honestly, the whole bidding system on XI's ah is lame. Much prefer it in other games where you can see exactly what people have stuff priced at and buy it for exactly that price.
B. Can't count anymore how many times someone has overbid on my items and I've always returned the excess gil.
The other person's attitude or approach doesn't matter to me. Turning myself into an *** to match because of something like that doesn't make me feel better after or serve any real purpose for me. I always returned if they asked.
I think there's a lot of grey area sometimes though, for example I sold a Martial Sword for 400k at one point (Regular at that time was 50k) but they were rare items on AH and I actually put it up for 150k as some Ground Strike-Spinning Slash builds were changing as a result of the Hagun craze. (People wanted to repeat the success with another job I guess) But I also had someone pay 2.5m for Tree Sapplings when they were going for 250k and a commonly sold item so I returned the gil of my own volition since the mistake was obvious. I guess I can just say intuition is your friend. I personally never made a mistake bid. I've made stupid bids, randomly trying strange prices on stuff and maybe walking away with a pealing nagan but I do differentiate between stupidity and accidents. If they contact me in a polite manner, I'd give the excess back (if they bought a 100k item for 1mil, I'd give them back 900k). If not, I wouldn't go out of my way to find them to give the gil back.
I've misbid twice, first time I got my gil back and the seller was really nice about it, second time my tells were ignored completely. I don't think i have had one of my items bought for more then i had it up for before or i cant remember but have under priced a item b4 also paid more then a item is worth b4, i think i done it 2-3 times in all the years i been playing, i think 2 were nice and refunded me and 1 was a jerk and would not even reply. Though i mostly try to be extra careful when buying a item or when putting a item up so i dont under price it.
This happened to me at 75 cap went to buy a cerby mantle +1 for 5m, and accidentally bought the nq when it was like 75k and bought it for 5m I was upset to say the least the Jp was nice and refunded me though.... Yes I know one big run on sentence don't care
Common sense would be just to give it back. I don't know why people find it hard to do the right thing. In real life if you worked a cash register you give correct change and try to do the right thing.
everybody gives an excuse to keep the money. this topic relates with people in real life personalities and what they where taught. That is what it feels like. I also kept the money when they bought my single bynes for the price of 100. I typically spent the money right away on currency or something so if they came asking, I had nothing for them. Figures why shiva is a garbage server. I just posted a SS of a bazaar in which I bought Ceheutzi Claw for 6.5k, NPC price. As soon as I bought it, the JP started spamming me for hours about the "Mistake".
I jerked him around for 2 hours or so, in the meantime he has several of his friends/mules send /tells to me to get it back. He followed me everywhere I went, even to campaign battles. In the end, I felt sorry for him. He used to tell me JPONRY all the time and set it in his /seacom. I gave it back to him, even though I am probably poorer than him. Maybe I got through his xenophobia and he will not be so cold next time. If they don't approach me aggressively I will give back the excess with no problems(if I still possess it..like, if too much time passes I've probably spent it).
If they're aggressive, or not polite, I'm keeping it. I've also had a case when someone bought something from my bazaar that they didn't intend to, but I didn't refund that cause they could sell it back just as well and the price was fixed. Sell the gil for real money. Use the real money to buy hookers and blow.
@NoStylin
What a dumb comparison, a situation where you're, by law, obligated to give the correct change, to a situation on a video game, where no such obligation exists. It's not even a case of "try to do the right thing", that is something that is expected of you, or you're punished, no moral dilemma comes into play in this instance. Please come overbid an item of mine, I'll educate you on what I've been taught. returned it the one time it happened for me, didn't bother anyone the times i overbid
guess in short, i don't think any buyer is entitled to a refund because they made a mistake, nor do i consider the seller obligated to go out of their way to give one, but i'd consider anyone unwilling to give one after being politely contacted a bit of a scumbag Sylph.Tigerwoods said: » Depends entirely on their attitude and how they approach me, really. I think you may be missing the point when this person mentioned different personalities, even in the instances of an online game. Even in real life, I once found $2000 in cash on the street and even though there was no risk of punishment, I still handed it in. And I haven't needed the law or the threat of punishment to persuade me. With wallets and phones, I could toss the wallets or wipe the phones and keep what I want with no risk but I still return them as I can ID the owners. So, I think the point is just that people will do what they do based on their own personalities. One more;
Not too long before SoA, I did some quest that required me wear certain body and leg armor. Leg armor was easy, I had to wait a few days for body and finally it popped on AH. The history said 5k, solid 5k for like three months. I start at 5k, eventually get it for 25k. Not a big deal, it is what it is. It's a rare find, the seller had one and took the opportunity to make some cash. So I go, do my quest and take it and put it back on AH to get my money back. 2-3 days later I get /tells "Hey, you! *** you, I hope you die in a fire!" So my immediate reaction is, of course, "U mad, bro?" to which I get "You price-hiking ***! Blisted." I had forgotten all about it and assumed he was talking about ancient currency which I didn't sell, so I figured he had the wrong person until I looked at my AH history. Anyway, I posted a comment to his character and then decided it was the wrong thing to do so I erased it. Few days later I got a /tell from him asking why I posted a comment and why he couldn't see it, I explained and he apologized for jumping my *** before. Sorry, dude. Just getting my gil back. EDIT: Edited for accuracy after looking at my deleted comments, He never said what it was he bought. Pantafernando said: » Shiva.Viciousss said: » A. Because that doesn't happen on other servers, right? If someone overpays by a significant amount (>100k) I will generally return the difference between the cost of the time and the amount they paid.
If someone lists an item on AH and I get it for significantly less -- or if they put it in a bazaar -- I generally only offer to swap it back if they send me a tell. I've bought several 100-currencies for the price of singles and held onto them for several days before reselling. I've never had anyone send a tell. I've been on both sides of this and generally I return the gil if they ask for it. Most of the time, they do not ask for it because 1) they don't care or 2) they can't find the character.
The first time someone overbid it was a JP and he bugged me for hours. Then his friend started bugging me, so I refunded it back to him. The only person I never returned gil to was Hehe. He put up a Sha'ir Manteel for 2 M instead of the going rate 20 M. Everyone on Seraph and Bismarck knows this person has the expensive bazaar and liquidates everyone's supply and jacks up prices. Till this stay, I still don't know who's mule this is. All I know the person doesn't speak English well. |
