So, let's say you list some item on AH for 100k, and someone accidentally buys it for 1 million. What would you do?
A) Keep the money, that's their problem
B) Return the excess money
C) Give them some stuff you were going to sell of approximate value to the amount they over-payed

I've been on both ends of this. I did attempt to return the extra gil when I was overpaid. It was a JP who sent it back along with a /tell that I tried to google translate and it was something like "I appreciate it, but it was my mistake". When I overpaid, I didn't attempt to get the gil back, it was my mistake, I figured if they were nice enough to contact me, I'd let them keep it anyway.
Honestly, it would depend on the amount and how you feel about it, because you can't assume that if the situation was reversed that they would even consider giving it back.
It's their mistake, you don't really have any obligation to return it if you don't want.

i would expect most ppl will say A. Or rather they will do A, and say w/e.
I always try to get a-hold on the person that over bid to return the extra gill. Unlike everyone else, im not a selfish, greedy *** and i dont come up with 20 rationalizations as to why its ok to keep it and not try to give it back.

I once got a Scroll of Meteor for 1mil when It was like 3.5mil. I just bid that on a whim and got it, I use the scroll and head out to help my LS. An hour or so later I get a /tell from a JP guy demanding 2.5mil, I tell him I didn't have that much (I didn't, I had just got done getting COR to 99) then he demands the scroll... Again, I didn't have it.
Guess my story was the opposite, but thought I'd share. Anyway, what he did was undercut by 2.5mil so his scroll would sell first. Moral of the Story: Don't undercut high value items, if it has a value of 2mil or more it will sale.

If it's WAY overbid, return the excess, or at least some of it. If it's not a huge amount then it's nothing to worry about.

I did that with like an ice lance +1 back in the day for my drg I think it was like 400k and I paid like 40k. The jp guy harassed me for weeks from his mistake. He even tried to mpk me the first time by stalking my party in qufim

Happened once to me.
I had a v. Stone for 650k in ah. I was running out of town doing stuffs, when i warped to jeuno. Then i saw a jp shout in their language, with my mule ls name in alphabet. I wondered wtf she wanted (mule had ls empty), then i checked my profile in ffxiah and saw her name purchasing my stone for 6,5m.
Well, it was pretty natural for me. I sent a tell, she tried some auto translate, but i knew what was it.
Even in rl money, i dont really care too much about money. Cash dont pay my honor, and mainly dont pay any headache that other people can cause me due to this kind of mistakes. And thats even more true with virtual money, its pretty stupid generating hate due to this.
So, i traded her the 5.850m. She said thank you and then i got soon after a pm asking to accept friend for list. Then i accepted and next days i got laid with her for some wild night bellow my peeping moogle.
(Ok, the last part isnt true).

In my personal opinion, always B. Wouldn't you expect the same back?
At the same time, let's be honest, if someone overbid say 500,000,000G, would you not be tempted to keep it all? Even I would at least think about it for a second. Though it is just a game it's only the right thing to do. Not because you might get something in return, not because it might help you 'get into heaven,' but because it's the nice/right thing to do in my eyes.

Unless it's someone I know. It's their own fault for over bidding or listing an item at a poor price. If they're gonna harass me then they can help populate my blacklist, and if they're gonna attempt to harass me in fields then I'll report them for grieve tactics if it falls within that lovely playing field and watch them disappear. Sadly I haven't had the chance to do that since the old days of HNM camping and KV dramas.
Do the opposite of this and you should be okay. :)

Last time I tried a B the person was rude, and didn't even thank me. (Not doing it for the gratitude but seriously?).
Definately depends on their attitude. If they're nice, I'd give it back. If it was a large amount I'd try and track them down anyways and give it back. Gil is nice but not at the expense of someone else (even if it is their mistake).
Edit: I hate how people use the excuse "this is just a game" to be *** outside of what a socitial RL norm would be. If you overpaid or were overcharged, or were duped or tricked IRL, you bet it'd remedied tout de suite.

People just need to be less careless when using the AH. I've gotten 5M items for 500k because people don't pay attention when they're posting.

Keep the gil and blist anyone who attempts to get it back. I would not expect to receive my gil back if I made the same mistake.

B. You can feel good for doing the right thing and they won't feel terrible.
That being said, I'm not gonna go out of my way to find them and return it until I get a /tell. I cant explain why it's just how I've handled it both times it happened to me.
@Anna's situation.. Would have done the same. IMHO you can't truly expect to get more than what you post an item for just because of a sale's history. That guy was a major douchenozzle for even sending a tell.

depends on whether or not you were trying to intercept a RMT purchase. If you were and was successful lay low for a while, if it' was a legitimate over bid might want to see if the person wants their gil back.

Keep the gil.
This way, you'll have taught them a valuable lesson; keep your retard out of the Auction House.
So in the end, you give 'em abit of an education, how 'bout that. Pretty fair, if you ask me.
This lesson can only be truly taught when something is lost.

This lesson can only be truly taught when something is lost. As much as I hate to agree with Starkzz here, I've been on both sides, and seen it happen, because people were careless.
But the argument "It's just a game" is a crutch (as anyone who's seen SAO" can remember in that one scene with Leafa and Kirito) for simply being a ***.
If someone's polite enough and admits to making a mistake, keep in mind that ethics can go a long way in how people view you (or your online persona that manifests itself in your place) even when declining to return it.
It is supposed to be an "Auction House", and utilize an almost completely free market, where people do make mistakes.

B.
I guess it's always the filthy-rich JP that overbid!
My friend had the same thing happen to him back in 2004 - rich JP player who added a zero and paid x10 the amount of my friend's item. The JP buyer contacted him, asking nicely if he could reimburse him. My friend called me for an opinion regarding this moral dilemma. I told him to simply return the excess gil (and he did).
A year later, I was leveling a low-level mage job, and wanted to buy Astral rings, which were going for 1M.
"You buy the copper ring for 1 million gil"
The seller was nice. It was a low-level character, probably a newbie, yet they didn't hesitate to return the gil immediately. I thanked them and tipped them with like 100k.

I'm usually pretty careful about bidding so I've only made a handful of mistakes but when I do, I deal. It was my own damn fault for not paying attention or trying to do something too fast and not checking before I hit that button the last time.
If you over bid on an item I'm selling, I'll probably return it but only if I notice or if they tell me. I hardly remember what I sell and hardly ever check each thing I get out of my d-box so it's unlikely that I'll pay enough attention to see if anyone overpaid.

A.
Shiva was a garbage server, if you weren't on my friend list or linkshell, I didn't care about you. I also kept the money when they bought my single bynes for the price of 100. I typically spent the money right away on currency or something so if they came asking, I had nothing for them.

If someone overbid or accidentally under-priced an item and asked me nicely for a refund, I'd probably give it to them if they weren't RMT or someone notorious for screwing over other people. However, if someone demanded a refund as seen in some of the stories here? Screw that, the money is mine now.
So, let's say you list some item on AH for 100k, and someone accidentally buys it for 1 million. What would you do?
A) Keep the money, that's their problem
B) Return the excess money
