Do you have a religious objection to war? You can slash your tax bill 20%.

Scalia’s major screw-up: How SCOTUS just gave liberals a huge gift

Quote:
With an otherwise awful Hobby Lobby ruling, right-wing judges just said I don't have to pay for warfare! Here's why
Basic points (paraphrased from the article but read it anyway):

1, Hobby Lobby and other businesses with conservative religious owners do not need to pay for what the Affordable Care Act mandates as full coverage for family planning.

2, In 2012, the Supreme Court ruled that the Affordable Care Act’s mandate for the purchase of insurance was constitutional as a tax, to fund the public good of healthcare. The issue necessarily now shifts to whether an individual or a privately held company has to pay a tax for anything religiously abhorrent.

3, The conservative majority of justices has written itself into a corner in which it cannot refuse religious exemptions from selected tax obligations. The same preponderance of Supremes will have no way out of ruling, for example, that Quakers (plus the Amish, Mennonites and others) do not have to pay the roughly 20 percent of our taxes that goes toward supporting the U.S. military.

Is that what you got from that?

All I got was a complete twist of facts and circumstances of two very particular cases to make a point that was never even attempted to be made.

That is like coming up with the conclusion that the sky is blue based on the statement "Peanut Butter tastes good to some people."

In other words, that "article" is pointless and wishful thinking. Because if the author's wishes were to come to fruition, then we can expand this to the point where nobody will pay taxes because they don't like where the money they give is going to.

King aren't you an accountant?

Are you not interested in cutting your client's tax bills 20%?

Of course its wishful thinking. But wishful thinking that has a chance to stand up in court.

If someone believes that a form of birth control is murder, and can escape a tax burden on that belief, than someone who believes war is murder should have similar relief.

P. S. Welcome back. I knew you couldn't stay away. You have too much fun here.

I also understand the importance of having a government. Even though I strive to lower my client's tax bill to the extent legally required (damn AMT ruining everything), I will never, ever, create a situation or allow anyone who makes over 66.9k in taxable income to not pay taxes.

Those are two completely different things. Unless there is a church for liberal pacifists who do not want to pay taxes and is accepted by the federal government to be a legitimate religion, this will never happen.
