I'm thinking of trying to setup with a 2-box thing on one machine, I have a few questions and would appreciate any advice. I have googled this and read loads of forums but they always start too far down the process to be of any help, I really need step by step instructions.
1) Will I need to buy another copy of the game?
2)Once I have another copy of the game (if necessary) will I actually need to install it on another drive or is it just for the game codes?
3)Once I have the codes where do I type them? I was thinking SE account management page but a forum I read said it was on POL somewhere.
4)Do I need a completely new SE account for the second character?

ok thanks. So I buy another hard copy of the game and all expansions and type the codes into my existing SE account? "Add service account" presumably?

1. You need another set codes not the game in general.
2. You don't need a second se account but it is better to use a second one say one account get banned for something it will count towards both accounts if on the same se account.
3. To use the codes register them on account.square-Enix.com after you logged in.
4. 2 boxing on 1 computer can be very tedious and greatly reduce your game play it's better to get a second pc

I 4-box on the same PC with no issues. Depending on your setup, it can be more tedious/annoying to use two computers.

I guess it's more or less what one grows a custom too

A friend of mine said when he was temp banned, both accounts were banned since "SE bans by credit card". Can't confirm this is actually true, nor do I believe you intend to do a banable offense, just saw the topic brought up so just thought I'd mention that.

I've heard that too (@cc banning), but that seems like a slippery slope considering people occasionally pay for their friends accounts. I personally pay for 4 accounts technically owned by 3 diff people, it'd be a pretty big bummer if se hit them all because of one. I've been told they IP ban as well, but that was a good long while ago back when they actually cared about banning people (and the person did something stupid/offensive enough to piss the gm off enough to ban all the accounts that had ever logged in that IP, it wasn't just random cheating.).

Pro-tip: If you use a controller on PC, use FFXI Switch Monitor and assign a button to the controller.
I can switch between dual boxed characters by clicking Select on my controller - no more Alt Tab.

I can't even imagine how slow I'd be if I had my alt on a second computer.

EDIT: Now that my initial awe is curtailed slightly, where do you find such a wonderful thing? I didn't see it under the add-on or plugin sections.

Ffxi switchmoon is a free software you can get in internet. Its not unique, there are several softwares that can input keyboard commands to controller, so allowing you to alt tab with 2 buttons in controller, or even one, if you prefer.
As well, other people have mentioned there is one special controller that should do the same, a logitech, but i cant really say anything past that, never used.

I did a search and saw there were multiple sites offering the software, but I wanted to check for a tried and true version before I started randomly downloading and installing things... It just seems safer that way.
I appreciate the quick responses, guys :)

There's a huge difference between something that sends an alt tab and switchmon though.
Switchmon injects a command in to the window to place it on top rather than simply pressing alt tab. This means you can have several other windows up and you won't have to worry about it switching between them and it will only trigger on your game windows.
Though there is one downside and that is sometimes it gets some kind of command stuck in it that sends button presses on it's own. So it can hit the rest button or confirm or cancel when you switch. But other than that it works very well.

I want to say this is the site I downloaded from. I can say this file is safe, but I'm not 100% sure if it's the file I used.

I recall there being some weirdness on win7 or higher but not everyone gets that. Just be sure you have netframework 2.0 installed.

I multibox on the same computer with up to 3 accounts, 3 monitors and 3 controllers.
I have each controller assigned to a particular vmware virtual machine so they can control each individually.
But that's how I do it, I imagine some of these others that multibox on one device are more skilled at it than myself.
Edit: I'd like to add that I don't have any scripting setup to control the others from my primary either, I do it all manual.

If you play on keyboard a G11/G15 keyboard makes life with multi boxing fairly easy as you can assign 1 button to do different things on each character simultaneous. I can easily 4-5 box without ripping my hair out.

While im still reading about lua programming and gearswap, ive been using send addon for easy stuffs. Also, i play the main char in xbox. This way, in one button i assign everyone to follow main while the pc just focus in the char who demand most attention, that mean, the healer, that have the command send for /assist, /attack, /ws, and others jas, like formless strikes, impetus, etc.
As someone said in the past, you will be barely mediocre without any kind of auto, like scripts, still, with the game as its, its possible to do a lot with just those rudimentar tools. Can do anything that demand solely attack and heals fine, but for stuffs that demand stun, behavior changes like running out doom aura, without any script, its pretty hard.

How do ppl have multiple monitures hooked up to a single comp; and have each monitore have something different on it????

I used two separate comps myself. Allows me to use both at the same time. (and i don't use any 3rd pt programs that some ppl use.) Of coarse at the time, the comp i was on couldn't come close to handling two accounts at once anyway. But i prefer two separate ones.
Of course if you get up to 3-4 accounts you might have issues...

Was there some secret edit? Just that you said 1 monitor, and effectively I'm using 3 computers as they're each isolated in their own virtual machines.

I can confirm that this is definitely not true. And fun fact, you can use the SE ID that the account was banned on and still register for FFXIV, but not FFXI!
