Single Player RPGs like FFXI?
Anyone know of any single player RPGs similar in style to FFXI. Looking for a game that doesn't have a definitive end, but allows for things like farming, similar to Dynamis/Salvage etc. to build relic/mythic type weapons. Any thoughts?
Final Fantasy 12 is the closest I've come to an XI experience. The story is blah but it has a lot of side content like weapons and stuff to collect and notorious monsters.
Skyrim
FFXII, aka "FFXI offline". The gameplay is similar, the whole game is similar, only the story is different but you don't play FFXII for its story.
-Dragon's Dogma(+DLC/Dark Arisen Expansion pack) (Xbox 360)
Has alot of armor, weapons, and tough endgame monsters. The story is trash imo, but the gameplay is pretty amazing. Various jobs to choose from, that are very similar to those found in FFXI. -Xenoblade Chronicles (Nintendo Wii/Wii U) Most of the above, though not near as much armor and weapons to collect. Extremely fun, and a very good story to boot. Graphics are dated, but bearable. -Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate (3DS, Wii U - I recommend the latter) This one is abit tough, but has an extreme amount of content. Many, many weapons and armor to make, and many NMs to battle. The whole game is about tackling NMs, infact. Not unusual to put 500+ Hours into this game, and still have things to do. Not a very good story at all, but the game is about hunting NMs, so no story is very excusable. Any of the above listed games have a Dynamis(Farm an absurd amount of coins over a decent period of time to exchange for weapons) element to it?
Uh, not really no. I mean, the games I listed (bar Xenoblade) can have you spending hours upon hours to grind some of the legendaries, but nothing to the extent of FFXI's Dynamis.
Pokemon, get all 151 (or 251 in GSC) and get them all to 100, want the extra challenge? get shinies.
have no idea beyond that. :P You can get a modded English version of FFXII. Adds in the Zodiac Job System and trial mode in English Translation. Zodiac Job system is actually setting your characters with jobs, but they can't change job. Each job has their own set paths. Trial Mode has the toughest boss in the game.
.Hack games are good too. The story even revolves around an online game. lol Good luck finding them without paying an arm and a leg.

Even the best weapons for every skill only take like 10 hrs to make based on luck and 50 hrs to master respectively. It's much more subtle and difficult than XI though, so I don't want to overwhelm you. Atmosphere based intensity instead of hand holding linear progression If you get Dark Souls invest in an extra gamepad or two. They tend to go flying when I play it. The bosses are brutal. Job List: White Mage Uhlan (Dragoon as well call it) Machinist: Gun Ranged User Red Mage Knight: (Paladin) Monk: Except has White Magic and uses Poles. Time Mage: Crossbow user and Time Spells Breaker: Uses Axes, Hammers and bombs Archer: Ranger Black Mage Mononofu: Samurai Shikari: Ninja Yes FFXII has open world with Notorious Monsters, city traveling and mob grinding for Exp. Normal FFXII has no jobs and no trial mode, thus choose any path you want to go. Zodiac Job System is International version (JP only). Yes it can be modded to English translations. Edit: Trial Mode disables your current save but gives you access to 100 floors of battles. Floor 100 has a Boss that is harder than Yiazmat. Heading to the mall now to check out a few of these. Thanks for the advice!
Just wanted to chime in: it's a bit more like World of Warcraft than Final Fantasy XI, but Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has a ridiculous amount of content in the form of sidequesting and item hunting and even crafting (which was mostly lacking from FFXII; the bazaar system was a little wonky and wholly pre-determined). The flexibility of building a character kept me interested even when the gameplay got a bit repetitive.
For challenge, the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins is still one of the hardest RPGs I've played. One wrong move will result in a party wipe at virtually any point in the game. The console versions were much tamer (notably because friendly fire was disabled at normal difficulty, but was enabled on the PC at normal). The woeful lack of meaningful gear and no means of re-specializing your characters, though, did get quite frustrating. It was like playing a really old school game, say System Shock 2, where failing to read strategy and plan ahead could leave you completely screwed. The Elder Scrolls games tend to offer the best open-world "MMO" style of single-player gaming I've ever found. However, they're very much Western RPGs and very much not JRPGs, so you have to be amenable to that.
Otherwise, if you want the single-player FFXI experience, I agree that FFXII provides that to some degree. But, honestly, I'd say just play FFXI by yourself. Almost everything pre-SoA can be done solo now, after all, if you deck yourself out in i117 SoA gear. Quetzalcoatl.Jhedin said: » But, honestly, I'd say just play FFXI by yourself. I've been back to FFXI for 2 months, started from scratch and having a blast doing nearly everything solo. Just don't race to 99. Gearing up pre-99 is a challenge these days. Focus on 1 main job, collect entire gear sets, do missions and an appropriate level (Promys at 40ish, Rank5 at 50ish, etc) Take it slow, you'll get to 99 in a few months and you'll be able to farm dynamis for eternity if you want. Monster Hunter is pretty much a massive grind fest. You kill X mob to make that mobs armour and weapons to fight harder mobs to make their armour and weapons to fight harder mobs to make that mobs armour and weapons to fight harder mobs... you can see where this going. Theres hundreds of weapons and armour to get so lots of mobs to kill.
