Not sure where to posts this, keep posting technical problems on ffxi on this topic and getting responses so i guess i'll keep it up, even if it is just one last time, i apologize.

having a really annoying issue with my controler that i'm just short from reinstalling ffxi of things i havent done.

hoping someone can give me another way to approach this problem or if they've had it before, what did u do?

my character walks at certain directions with my controler. i have two controlers now that this has happened to. one is old and runs in every direction except the left, where it only walks when i go left.

another controler, my newest one. have had it for a month and half, runs every direction except forward, character only walks when going forward... extremly *** annoying. i cant go anywhere without walking in with that controler, basically.

i just ordered another damn controler and i have no doubt in my mind the same ***is gong to happen again.

anyone have any idea how to stop this from happening? what is causing the problem? how i can prevent it? i'll post whatever info u need, just ask.

btw i can move perfectly with keyboard, so it is definitely the controlers that are messed up, obviously just that both controlers have slightly different problems.

I assume you've already calibrated the analog sticks? This can happen when they are set wrong.

I forget the name of it, but its a like, "Dead zone" or "Play" on the joystick. So like, you barely move the stick it doesn't move. Hard to explain.. But hope it makes sense, but you need to increase the deadzone more.

@Sekundes, yup calibrated them through the ffxi config setting. and on the ffxi config setting the controls seem to work perfectly. so, when i move up, the little pointer goes all the way up, where if i am in ffxi, when i move the joy stick up, it acts like i am walking, and only have the joystick a little farther than half way.

@Dwb, how do i increase the deadzone? would the be in ffxiconfig also?

I would verify to make sure you're in the right language config, just a suggestion.

Are you sure you didn't just hit the walk toggle in game on accident? It's the "z" key in the compact layout. I don't recall what it is or if it differs in other keyboard configs

@Kyler, dont think so, i can run in all directions except forward... so, unless there is another walk button i didnt know about that lets u set walk on different directions and lets u run on others then, no i havent tried it. i know about the key u're talking about though, and once you hit it, you walk in all directions... in this situation i walk only in one direction, and if i go another, then i run--without pressing any button to change my walk to run.

@Jetackuu, well idk what other language config i can toggle with. i've checked the ffxi config many times and there are two that u can fix. one for movement and another for the camera. the movement is the one with issue and that i've recalibrated at least 3 times since this has started.

tbh guys, this is looking like my controlers just shitty... i was hoping it could be something that was fixable

Keep in mind that clicking with the MOUSE in the middle of the game window while the game window is not active causes the character to move frenetically or cause the UI to get stuck on targeting mode, depending on the situation you click into.

The fix is click with the two buttons of the mouse until it becomes responsive again. That's a "quirk" of the window mode. Depending of the situation it might not be a fault on your controller.

@Mariane, can have the mouse unplugged and the character still walks instead of runs when joystick is at maximum u can place it forward. i've had that happen to me too, i just move the mouse to the center of the screen and either right click once or hit menue on my controler and it stops, but thats not the issue here. issue is: i purposely want to run, instead i walk when pushing the joy stick forward to the maximum and awkwardly enough can run when i push the joystick other directions other than forward

only reason i think that this is a problem that is fixable is because the controler is not, not responsive when moving forward, just doesnt run like i want it to. if it weren't responsive then it would have to be a problem with the wiring, but walking certain directions and being able to run other directions hints some kind of config problem

Well it happens sometimes that the mechanism on the analog thumbstick gets worn out and starts to get sluggish response as result.

Unfortunately the only fix for that is replacing the faulty part. And most times the controller is too cheap to justify the hassle.

Ok, Jetackuu *mind blown* srsly didnt know that and hopefully is where i can fix the problem.

I got this game though Steam, so I log on steam then from there I can reach my ffxiconfig (through the steam menue).

Where else do you think i could go to find another ffxi_config?

why the hell would they need more than one anyway, the ffxiconfig i am at seems to cover everything, but I am really open to anything atm.

getting a new controler in the mail some time next week and don't want this movement thing to happen again, being that i only had the controler for 2months, at most, and its already doing the same thing as the controler before that.

would be even better if i could resolve this with this other ffxi_config and i had 3 controlers that worked now instead of 2 crappy ones and a good one that could *** up at any near second...

ugh steam...

I'm not sure, never installed via that method.

there's multiple languages on the install, a config for each language, for each launcher.

idk about the steam version though.

But to me if the config was working fine, the game should work fine too, in my experience setting up controllers, I haven't had an issue.

However there could be something wrong with it, have you tried it with other games?

sounds like you get shitty controllers, which do you have?

I started using ps2 controllers via a usb adapter, they work with simple configuration and no tweaking, don't have to fight with a shitty driver etc.

@Jetackuu, i use microsoft 360 controllers. actually, i think i'm going to order a ps2 controller, lol. i first played on ps2 on release and all years i played, never had to replace the ps2 controler once. but, what should i put on the search in amazon, cause i know not any ps2 controler would work, or would i have to get an extension for the usb drive?

@Squishytaru, took me a bit to get what u were asking but i think i got it. so, i pushed up on the joystick full throttle and began to walk instead of run, then i pressed the walk button on keyboard, character still was walking after being pressed (just like it should after pressing the walk button on keyboard), then i pressed the walk button again on the keyboard (which should allow me to run), making the character still continue to walk with the joystick fully pushing forward, in other words it didnt change.

but to answer ur question simply squishy, no, it doesnt turn my walking off by pressing the walk button

iirc, there's no easy to configure a 360 controller, and I seem to recall something about dead spots on it. I researched it quite a bit a few months ago in trying to figure out a way to get the wireless receiver for windows working for a direct input game (ffxi).

x-input devices just are a pain to get working, if you can even do it at all.

to each their own, but I prefer the usb adapter.

I noticed that xbox controllers were mentioned. I've used the controllers as well to play XI on PC. And burned through two controllers as well. Even double checked by using the controllers on xbox. I think the controllers are just poorly made. :<

Yeah haha, I thrashed 2 360 controllers in 6 months on FFXI and the triggers started becoming intermittent and the joystick press failed on both. Too expensive to keep replacing them. Plus I remember having to jump through hoops to get the triggers to act as buttons on windows xp and vista

To each their own but I still stand by the logitech F310 off newegg, 20-$25 shipped and it usually gets to my house in 48hrs.

the f310 sucks, I have several of the, because they're too cheaply made. Logitech just doesn't make them like the used to, I had an old one that a faulty usb port fried, wish it hadn't as the newer models don't hold up.

only problem I've had with that adapter is somebody brought a dog in the house and it chewed through the ps2's cable, which is a standard, need to fix the cable, I just haven't felt like repairing it. Not even sure where my heat shrink and heat gun is, and I'm out of solder.

XBOX360 controllers are built with cheap crappy parts. Microsoft does a GREAT JOB filtering the noise from the analog sticks using software on the XBOX360 software, but on the PC, the input goes straight to the game unfiltered. Hence the results you get and the moron fanbois praising their incredibly good HALO controllers.

I've always had nothing but trouble with motioninjoy. Yes, you can get it to work but it's clunky. I prefer my ps2 with an plain usb adapter. I'd love wireless but there's not really a good way to deal with drivers for them.

I've always encountered a strange glitch like this regardless of the controller or if on ps2 or 360, i always could only walk diagonal-left, left and all other directions worked except for diagonal left lol

I use the exact same USB converter that Jetackuu recommended. Before that, I've burned through a handful (no pun intended) of controllers over the years, and I've run into the issue you're describing (hasn't happened with the converter; PS2 controllers are solid, and even if one were to break I've got spares. Also nice to not have to get used to re-mapping everything and getting used to slightly different grips etc.).

While you're waiting for your new controller, one 'cheat' you can do is to deliberately screw up the joystick calibration: go into the default OS gamepad controller configuration (Windows for me) and go through the calibration wizard for the controller. When you get to the point where it asks you to move the joystick in all directions, DON'T move it all the way to the front - only push it about halfway forward. This will cause it to read forward pushes at about double their actual value - which means it takes a very light push to Walk forward, and if you push the stick all the way forward (no stress or strain, just a regular push forward) then your character will Run forward. The main downside to this is that your character will be slightly more prone to hopping forward a step or two if you slightly bump the joystick - no big deal for melees, but can interrupt a spell or shot for casters and ranged attackers if you're not careful.
