FF7/8 PC versions (original) working in Windows 7

you basically need that, and to do a few other modifications, 8 works pretty well with it, but for 7 you need to download the input.cfg and a save file and to create the structure manually to get it to work.
There's some other cool tools available on this site:

for those of you who are nerdy enough to have the original and too cheap to repurchase it. (Yes I know, steam finally put 8 up...)

ah, mistake: download it from here: apparently the previous link was an old version:

edit: also forgot to mention you need to update the games before using said patches.

interesting: I had to turn of shaders for my 550ti to play the game even after the patching, ff7 is trickier to set up as you need the input.cfg and a save file to create the save file structure (as the game can't run, and cant' be patched without it).

Funny that you comment, the PlayStation version was MIDI too. But it was using the native synthesizer on the PlayStation and custom made instrument samples, not General Midi instruments.
I remember the original release could load custom samples to a series of Sound Blaster cards (AWE32) and it would sound exactly like the PlayStation version of the music, then.

There is a way to load the playstation files into the PC versions, not sure if it's possible on the steam version.

Someone took Neil Corlett's PSF engine (Highly Experimental plugin for Winamp), made a "driver" which uses the PS1 FFVII sound driver to play the songs. Works great.
Btw, I regularly rip songs from the PS2 version of FFXI and make PSF2s of them to share with the friends, every time they add music files with the updates.

you need to install the game, then update, then apply the patch. that goes for ff7 or ff8.
For FF7 on top of that you need to manually create the save folder structure.
It's not that complicated, as far as the update, there's this thing, called google.

If you had the right soundcard in 1997 (AWE32) it would sound normal (just like the PS1 version)....
But if you had FM synthesis instead it would sound like crap lol.
And it doesn't sound much better in nowadays windows even with Direct Music (Soft synthesizer that comes with Direct X)

as my googlefoo is weak this morning, you know of an additional software synth that can be added that will play the audio properly on newer systems?
my computer might be weird anyway as I run my audio throiugh a philips usb stereo, but I have speakers somewhere that I can run it through.
I mean I could probably hunt down one of those old cards somewhere and put it in as I have a regular pci slot, but I doubt there's drivers for win7x64.
