I'm actually buying a barebones kit to build off of. kit is like $969 then i still need the SSD, blu-ray optics, OS(windows 7 probably just gonna get a cracked one), a upgraded CPU fan, and 2x xfx 5850. So yeah gonna cost a good bit to build.

Depending on where you get your parts, I actually wouldn't buy them piece at a time lest something for whatever reason goes wrong or turns out incompatible, if you let too much time pass from your initial purchase date, you wouldn't be able to RMA and get a replacement.

That's why you don't buy incompatible parts.
I dunno...may be a bit easier for me because if I happened to get a part that I didn't want/incompatible I would just sell it to a coworker or to my work itself.
Piece by piece ain't too bad, it just depends what pieces you are buying.
Certain things just can't go to piecework, but I'd imagine buying your processor and other big ticket items separately isn't all that bad of an idea :/

Lol yeah, you always buy the big stuff last usually cuz it costs the most.
I don't really like buying semi-generic with my mobo, processor, ram, hdd.

Oh I would go with the big boys for CPU, GPU and PSU. However, I have had some decent luck with relatively inexpensive and surprisingly fast RAM from brands like AData, GSkill, etc.

Can't speak much for monitors as I haven't owned many over the years, but currently using a 24" asus LCD monitor in DVI setup and a 32" 1080p Sharp Aquos HDTV.
Also CPUs is pretty much total preference, worked with Intel & AMD and have been happy either way.

Next machine I'm building is going to get updated into 2010 from having all my silly low mhz dual core processoars.
