Is it just Sylph or is every server dead?
Everyone has to like the same things I like!!!!
I know who he reminds me now: the woman from Westboro baptist church.
He has the exact same kind of fanaticism and overall speech. You're the one that quit an mmo yet continues to post on its forums preaching about its demise. I think you are the fanatic here.
You should know what this thread was about when reading the title.
Don't like the conversation and it makes you upset? Simply ignore the thread. Looks like you are looking to pick a fight again my friend. If the game dies, its because the sheer idiocy of SE is killing it. They're like a mongoloid, low IQ doctor randomly stabbing their patient with scalpels in areas that have nothing to do with the problem that brought the patient to them. Each stab is more and more blood leaking out onto the table, that the doctor has no idea how to put back in. And the doctor doesn't care because its too high from sniffing markers and whackin' it with antifreeze.
Now here's the problem with FFXI, it's not interesting to play anymore. In fact, some people find it's more interesting to do something else like posting about FFXI than actually playing it.
A smart customer will always do what gives him/her the most fun. At the moment, I lurk around FFXI forums, check on FFXIV, check on Steam Summer Sale and play Tomb Raider and maybe log on to FFXI once a while to check it out. I don't have to play the no-fun FFXI until I think it's interesting enough to play again. What SE does or what the community does is irrelevant to my fun time (except when I'm lurking). On topic, I don't think servers are 'dead' in a sense of not having people. It's 'dead' in a sense of not many people are interested in joining shouts or just AFKing all day There's an MMO I used to play a long time ago called Nexus:TK (known as Baram in Korea). It came out in Korea in '96, and was released in the US in '98. Baram is still around, making it the longest ongoing MMORPG in the world. As recognized by Guinness anyway.
As for Nexus: TK? Man, if only you guys knew how terrible that game was run. The people running it have ignored their playerbase ENTIRELY for the past 5+ years (and I do mean entirely, regardless of how loud they were, and despite it having its own "Dreams" forum for players to make suggestions), and the vast majority playing are now Indonesians who migrated since their version of the game had shut down. The company running it also has an F rating from the BBB. And somehow, that game's still up. It's not F2P (edit: F2P till level 49, $10/month after, but essentially everything is based on endgame). Even at its peak of popularity, it had only hit 1k+ players online once (which I was actually there for). Now it's lucky to reach 400 at peak hours. I said this cool story just to say that FFXI is comparatively doing much better, even at its worst. Yeah I get that it's different businesses, different costs to maintain, but there's no chance in hell that FFXI will "die" any time soon unless it somehow becomes a major financial risk to SE to keep running. Or, at least, I'll go crazy if that rotting husk of an MMO somehow outlives FFXI. Asura.Daemonarch said: » If i was worried that much about server population, I'd play a newer, more popular game. But i hardly ever have trouble finding xp parties/end game ls's/end game pugs. If nobody is shouting when I'm looking for plasm farms, i shout myself. (never have problems finding members, actually i get /tell spammed most of the time.) Would i like to see the servers overflowing again like it was back in the day, yes. But this game is 11 years old...it is naturally gonna lose players because people getting burnt out, players that want a more modern game, or players growing up and having responsibilities in RL that get in the way of playing. People are growing out of/getting sick of this game faster than new players are signing up. Imo this is why you are seeing lower server populations. But it doesn't mean the game ifs dying... I honestly think that this pretty sums it all. The game is old, and most of the first-time players ( like myself back from 2004) are now old too (!!!) and I went from a student to a full-time working mom of 2 kids! So I assume I'm not the only one. I feel we're still pretty active on Asura, I just think for people who still wanna play that it's now more of a matter of finding an active LS, or to adapt yourself to the new realities of the game. I only do pre SoA content because my LS is down to 6 persons, and because I don't have time anymore to play so I don't have top gear... I'm not even trying to grab a Delve/plasma/whatever people calls it. But I still play because I'm still enjoying the time I spent with my friends and family. A lot of players are gonna move to FFXIV and I think it's great if they feel that they have done everything they wished on FFXI, maybe I will too when I feel I'm done with IX. That being said, I don't feel the need to bash on people that wanna move to XIV, or on people that still enjoys XI. It's your money, your free time... do whatever you like with it! Awe he has resorted to name calling, how cute.
It's like beating a dead horse, nobody should waste time with draylo, he reacts more hysterical each day for every negative comment about ffxi, full fanatic on negation,
I am rather tired dealing with the argument "it's 11 years old game - it is so old and outdated" blah blah blah. That is a very lame excuse for the developers. Considering they did manage to create some good contents with ToAU and Abyssea - so it's not saying they have no clue and cannot do great things with their limited PS2 spaghetti noodle codes.
If you are looking at "really old archaic gameplay" - there are lots of great example of making "NEW" old school game with a fresh twist. Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, and Etrian Odyssey are a few example of this. Each of these games are based on really "boring, musty, old school game mechanic" but manage to add fresh new twist that still make it relevant today. Heck the same gameplay are used over and over on Mario and Zelda - but each new game over a slight twist. Something that FFXI developers could do with each new expansion. Boring grind is not a real problem if they are at least fun and addictive, and rewarding everyone to do it over and over again - and at least accessible. Phantasy Star Online is a great example of "Grindtastic" repeat ad infinitum over and over to get better gears from the same 12 dungeons. SoA pretty much shat on everything but yet refuse to provide the same people it shat on with something to even out the odds so they can at least tackle the new contents. FF14 adopted the WoW gear progression, and it's a great example on how to copy from every other games out there and make it your own flavor. MMOs in general really lack when it comes to gaming as a whole. They are all designed to just get your money.
Is FFXI one of the best ones? I have no idea as ive only played Wow, Aion, FFXI and FFXIV so its not fair for me to agree or disagree with that. IMO though, MMOs lack a lot behind stand alone titles you find on consoles/pc etc. They are great to kill time, and if you have friends that play them with you. Id much rather play XI than Call of Duty or Halo online. Overtime I just got disillusion with MMOs and realized how many great games I missed out on this current gen due to all the time spent on XI. Catching up on all these games made me see how much MMOs miss out on really giving you amazing story experiences and game play. Don't get me wrong, XI had some great stories to tell. It was its main difference between them and other MMOs. For me the Stories have been lacking since ToAU. But I do realize that is subjective. Most single player games have no replay value. And a large majority of online competitive games like CoD, Halo, LoL have an overwhelmingly large community of whiny abusive players. Most mmo have people from all over the spectrum. Its nice in that way.

I act no more "hysterical" then you and your buddies posting on a forum of a game you quit. You post negative remarks about the game in any thread that sprouts up for FFXI, so not sure how that is less hysterical then me coming in and schooling you. fonewear said: » Leviathan.Draylo said: » Queen of the doomsday prophets has arrived. I think Draylo is just pissed because they have too much invested in the game. They spent way too much time and energy investing in something that will EVENTUALLY disappear with the flip of a switch. Time that would have been much better spent in the real world. They let the game become their world, rather than an intermittent escape from the real one. So of course they feel threatened by any suggestion that it will go away.

I wonder if you realize that you always throw fuel on the fire.
