Well, since the install is already ***, you could search through the registry and delete all the entries for "Playonline".

That should make sure that your computer no longer thinks it's installed.
I did that. I used a bunch of different registry cleaning programs, uninstall programs etc etc. Google a ton of different "solutions", nothing worked. I actually ended up having to re-install windows. How can it be so incredible stupid that it believes something is installed, then when it tries to uninstall it, it says the game isn't installed. Shouldn't it just register the game as uninstalled then?

Eh, computers... It's how they work. Or I guess don't work sometimes.

Very few "uninstallers" actually work as well as they should. They leave remnants of files and pointers all over the place in fear that removing some shared resource might mess something up. And when something just "disappears" nothing is uninstalled properly so you end up with all the indicators that it's installed yet it's not working.

The amount of work it would take do make sure it's all good... you'd probably be better off having reinstalled. A fresh image is good once in a while.

I must have had some really bad ***on my computer. Once the game was installed and all the updates finally were done I was gonna log in the game. All my characters were deleted. I got 2 accounts and all characters on both accounts were gone.

This is the first time ever I get hacked. I've never had issues with virus and stuff before, I've been using AVG free. Is there a better free anti virus program?

Been on the phone with SE for an hour, and they are starting an investigation. They say it can take up to 6 weeks before I get my characters back.

This sucks :(

Wow, thats the first time i've heard of the hackers in question deleting the files from your computer as well. I had a friend get hacked roughly a month ago, and he didn't even have this problem x.x...

What internet browser do you use, and do you use things like no-script, ad-block, and flash-blockers? They may help reduce your chance of getting further troubles. I really hope you won't have to go through this again, if you continue on with FFXI.

It probably won't take the full 6 weeks. Sorry to hear you got hacked. Its crazy how they hijacked your account and somehow deleted the ff folder making you try to figure that out, all the while they were emptying your toons of gil and equipment.. :(

Did you download something from this site within the past week? Some guy created a thread trying to pass off a virus/keylogger as a game tool a little while ago.

I guess I will get it all back. They said they will reroll the accounts to a point when everything was ok, once their investigation is done.

Damn annoying either way. I didnt even have any gil to speak of, less than 1 mil between the 2 accounts. Would have gladly just given the damn gil if I could have access to my accounts.

The only thing I really downloaded lately was the guildwork addon for FFXI.

Use NoScript and Flashblock with Firefox.

AVG is a waste of time, I've noticed that quite a few viruses actually will target AVG first and disable it, I personally use Avira, just the popups can get annoying.

Also worth getting either the SE token, or download the SE token app, since even if they hack your PC, the token should help keep your account protected.

I agree with Sigfreid. Use NoScript and Adblock+ with Firefox.

I was hacked a few years ago when I still played. It really sucks. They stripped my accounts clean. But yeah, you'll get everything back. Only crappy part is you only get 1 rollback, so make sure not to get hacked again D:

I could be wrong, but another incentive to use the token is if you do get hacked, SE will do a rollback without many questions.

I had a token on both accounts, but they were deactivated. SE missunderstood me when I reactivated my old account. I had a physical token on my old account, but when I reactivate it I had lost the token years ago. I asked them to deactivate the token, and they missunderstood me and deactivated my software token on my new account instead.

I've never been hacked before or had any problem with viruses, so I didnt bother to reactivate the software token again. Now I asked them if I can use the same software token on both accounts, but I cant. I also cant have 2 software tokens on one phone. I guess I'm gonna have to decide which account is more important and use software token on that account.

So is Avira the best free antivirus program out there now?

Are these two separate SE accounts or 2 different POL accounts? Because you can have multiple POL accounts on one SE account np... So if that's the case whoever you were talking to is HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE. As for multiple SE accounts, you can just get your POL moved to the same SE account if it is on two separate ones provided you have all the info for both. I've had to have POL accounts moved before so I'm certain it can be done.

It's 2 different SE accounts with 2 different POL ID's.

I guess once I got the accounts back I can call them up and see if I can move them together. If I move it so I got both POL ID's on the same SE account, am I still able to be online on both accounts at the same time?

Not really, but its often the most popular AV programs that are more likely to get singled out and targeted and Avira has been pretty solid at removing and preventing viruses for me.

Heard that Microsoft Security Essentials (used to be Microsoft Defender) is oddly pretty good as well, but stopping unwanted scripts running on any website you visit should be the first thing you do to defend against viruses.

Running Malwarebytes every now and then in addition to whichever AV program you choose will help reenforce your computers protection (anti-malware programs scan the pc in a different way to AV programs, so there is a chance that the MW programs will pick up something that the AV didn't).

Ok thanks. I'll look in to that as soon as I get the accounts back. I assume I could use the same software token for both accounts when they are under the same SE account then?

I don't think you can unlink an POL ID from an SE ID. Anyways, your best protection is avoid links where they ask you to copy and paste it in like a tinyurl and also any antivirus program and script blocker. A hacker can have your token deactivated and/or passwords changed if they have the right information.

Im not sure about recently but you were able to unlink pol from SE id provided you had all the information.

You can, I've done it before. My brother's pol account was linked to my SE ID and I called them 7 times until I got someone who would do it. So it can be done but you may have to call a few times.
