I miss some old people, that is about it. I do not miss the old days of turning my party flag on maxing the volume and sleeping/ because i knew it would be hours upon hours to hear the ding of getting a tell for invite.Even then most would be rmt tells.
I do not miss the old days of waiting hours upon hours to get a party only to have it fall apart after 1 kill because tank or rdm dcs. Then you are left with 5 people who desperately try to keep the party going with 5 till they can find a rep. What most people have is stockholm syndrome and remember too much good to outweigh the horrible.

I miss the feelings I had playing the old FFXI, but I don't miss the gameplay grind of playing the old FFXI. :p
Plus, I like the new SOA-era FFXI. Besides, Arciela wants me. I know she does. I can see it in her eyes.

There isn't that much to miss, maybe the fact that things were so slow you actually had to spend time with people and get to know them. I miss friends that have quit and the way we would meet people in parties and statics and whatnot. How often does that happen in Abyssea or Void Watch?
The reason people hate these threads is that the nostalgic posters always seem to conveniently forget the glaring negatives in the old-school game model, mainly the horrific time sink required to accomplish anything, even something as simple as just getting into an experience party. ^ +
Goblin trains
Running everywhere cause we had no VW/Abyssea/Waypoints/Nexus etc
RMT
Gil
Level caps
You get the point.

Lmao, what a lovely community this forum has. I was just thinking back to when I was enjoying the game the most and wondering if anyone else could relate. It's pretty funny how you all jump onto this like a pack of wolves.
What you are experiencing right now is... "Trolling", which is inevitable in a thread like this. The FFXIAH community is as fair, reasonable, and mature as it gets. Best way to deal with trolls is to NOT feed them. Stay focus on the nature of your thread, and by default the trolls will die off from attention deprivation.
Now to your point... I myself did not wish the level cap to exceed 75, nor did I initially wish for Abyssea to fall upon us. Over time, I have come to the conclusion that Abyssea and many of the other changes to Final Fantasy XI have for better and worse been equally both a curse and a blessing.
We *** and moan about unfavorable changes and undesirable nerfs. At the end of the day for those of us that still play, we are very much so tolerant of these end results, despite our protest and objections.
I myself, miss the good old days; However as the old saying goes... "All good things come to an end"
Keep playing if you enjoy the game's true essence, don't resign merely because the game has been going at an approach differently than you once remembered.
If this game's essence has tired you, then perhaps you should retire and resign.

I miss people. I miss helping Lv30 and 50 newbies with Kazham keys and AF quests. I miss atmosphere. I miss people being humble.
Doesn't mean I can't carve out another niche, should I want to. Re-up'd my sub, and I bought Seekers. It was fun playing that first day, and it reminded me of the days Promathia and Aht Urghan came out.

Disagreeing with someone =/= trolling them.
Edit - I think the fact that so many still post here despite not playing, myself included, is a testament to how great a community this is.

I wouldn't actually finding a "regular" exp party nowadays to back then, but you're right. OP, just find some like minded folks and roll with them. It'll be a heck of a lot harder to find but try to form a static with some folks.
Theres a guy on my server thats been trying to do this. A month ago he was level 55 RNG, Yesterday he was level 62. Yeah, I'd say that's not working out too well for him.

7 levels in a week? Sounds about par for the course. 1 level a day, at 4k/hour was a pretty decent haul.

I remember wanting to leave experience parties as soon as my emperor band was done. I hated healing as SMN in Bibiki Bay. I hated soloing bombs up top of U. Range even more.

Yeah i miss helping people with lowbie stuff and watching them get excited as the stuff a "High Level" can do. Lol I also misss the days when newbies would ask to See AF1 & 2. Like they were brand spanking new to the game. Hell i remember when i was new and i made my first long time friend, we did our Choco Lic thing together. Even tho we don't play FFXI as much anymore, we keep in touch by skype, ps3, etc.
Yes i have many fond good memories of the old days. Would i go back to them, Hard to say. I would like to see FFXI be in its prime again, sure and i think if SE spent some year of time to reface FFXI and make it look like XIV or close to it, then yeah i'd be all thrilled to see new people to the game again.

I guess I'm just a sucker for the "long-haul".
Since FFXI I've been playing Seatribe games. First Haven and Hearth which I was very successful in, and now I am a moderator on the Salem forums. Both of these games are very time consuming and because of it I find them to be rewarding. I guess I just don't enjoy the power leveling. When level sync came out I loved it and I agree the old game had many, many flaws. (SE Support is still the worst I've seen so far) I do however still miss the community as it was back then and the leveling. I'm aware that I can still do these things but as Inspector said, it's just not a viable solution.

I would think it's safe to say they are never going to rebuild XI like they did 14 on a new engine and such.

ofc. Just wish they would and maybe we would get a new player base again? Or at least run a damn TV advertisement for SoA. Then again if they been runed, I'd never know about it so I'm always hopping between FFXI & SC2 and when on the go, doing the vita and checking twitter so i have zero time for TV lol

I don't think revamping XI would add any new players really. The entire battle system and everything would have to be changed to modern MMOs' styles (see: what 14 is turning into), and they have 14 ARR for that, so yeah....

Like a couple folks pointed out, what people miss is the atmosphere. There was a certain adventure aspect to XI back when. Because people weren't capped on jobs and merits there were niche things to do, like farm gil for gear to be able to exp more efficiently, doing AF quests, crafting Noct +1 gear (whatever, lots of possibilities).
Current atmosphere is less of friendship and more of judgment/rude/negative overall atmosphere (think *** jokes, random noises, racism, the things that make an online community great).
The repertoire of choices shrunk because amount of soloable content increased, so there's less comradery towards strangers.
That said, game is more efficient now. To some, it feels less like an alternative reality and more like the game it actually is. But that's probably good, SE didn't put a warning to remember life for no reason.

Really? 'cos since Carbuncle merged with Gilgamesh I have notice a distinctly more friendly atmosphere than before.
Maybe I just got lucky with the server merge.

I miss Clear Pepsi, 60s-80s DC comics (particularly anything from Denny O'Neil), Tamagotchi, keeping Zero bars in the freezer, Shea Stadium, the Italian place my Dad and I used to get calamari at where the owner would always wind up covering us for twelve cents so we'd pay a round number (after several years we bought their staff a bunch of pizzas to pay them back), being excited to go to the mall and try to trade Pokemon cards (and getting ripped off for my Ninetails for a Clefairy!), playing Vanguard Bandits, and using WinMX as a chat client to nerd out with other nerds.
A lot of the things I listed? Probably best left in the past.

Since its really just my own interpretation of the atmosphere, I could try listing out all the characteristics that personalized XI back when for me vs now, but ultimiately I just wanted to point out that while people argue for and against the old days, they're rarely arguing for the old days because they prefer being inefficient. Now if they are, jesus save them, cause nobody else can.
(In terms of atmosphere as an analogy, imagine driving through the suburbs on a beautiful July afternoon vs driving through the ghetto at 9am in the winter. The color contrast alone is immense)

I tend to notice more of the opposite... The rudeness/negativity, when it occurs, is more one-on-one than it used to be, I think. Back in the day whole linkshells talked smack and hated one another over HNMs. Being a female/playing a female character also used to be a nightmare, with all the mouth-breathers hitting on you or making stupid sexual comments just because your character had pixel breasts. The faster pace does make it a bit harder/requires more effort to make positive connections though.

Please.
The expansion is a day old, you have barely any idea of what elements they might have brought back.
You need at least 2 more weeks for this thread to break out of its egg.
I agree. With abyssea we saw the removal of the daily grind, for better or for worse. I'm 100% on the side of taking the time to know the job as opposed to burning just cause. I do miss the days of partying old school and getting to know others. Those old school 75 dynamis days where you wipe to avatar 2hr, the sky farming, meripo... good times heh
But I think this expansion and update made was a huge step forward in making the game difficult and challenging, but really fun.. to get back to what made the game great. I'm looking forward to events being hard again, finally bringing back PLD.

I'm a bit on the fence about this, mainly because I had very good experiences "back in the day," although it was definitely more time consuming. Once thing I really can't relate to, however, is "waiting 6 hours for a party."
I don't ever remember waiting 6 hours for a party. Ever. One of my first 75s was DRG. When the DRG 2 hr was "call wyvern." Can't get a party invite? Make one. The most I ever waited was an hour, and I've waited longer for VW.
But still, the faster game play of this age is a lot more enjoyable, sometimes.
They really SHOULD have a 75 server. I'm sure someone has their own 75 FFXI server somewhere. Google it.
I started playing FFXI some time in 2003, I played until roughly a year before abysea was added and I enjoyed every moment of it. I'd had my account stolen, had it rolled back, gotten married ingame to someone I still talk to regularly, leveled several jobs to 75, solo'd BST to 75 back in the day, participated in all endgame events and met some very great people.
I started as a warrior swinging at bees in Windy with a sword and shield, reading over the 2003 guidebook several times and hoping to one day become a paladin. I was fairly young when I started this game, so it was a fairly big part of my childhood and teenaged years. I didn't accomplish much, but I enjoyed all of the time I spent ingame.
I'm not sure why I made this thread, but I was looking back at some old screenshots from 2004ish and really started missing the game. The way the game used to be.
I remember having every exp zone and their level ranges memorized, unlocking my first subjob, noob parties, my first ferry trip and hiding downstairs to avoid the kraken. Also killing my first ram outside Holla and having to use my 2 hour lol
Limit breaks, rank missions, 15million gp scorpion harnesses, seeing one of the very few relics on the server.
Does anyone else miss the old FFXI? Back when leveling took dedication, when questing required groups and people acually spoke in party chat for hours while staticing jobs? And does anyone even know what a magic burst is in 2013?
