[Dev] Software Token Smartphone App
I've been waiting for this for so longgggggggggggg
And every time I flash a new rom I will have to call SE. No thanks, but awesome for the average user.
Here is just a random question, is this even a good idea?
If you buy a security token, you own it. No one else can use it unless you lose it. If you use this, I assume you have to log into your account on your phone to get the password generator. So what is stopping someone else that already has your information from logging in and using it on their phone? They might lock it to your phone, in which case it would be safe I think. Or you have to register your phone on the SE account management website before you can use it. I'm not sure about this atm until there is more information. More ways for SE to make money. But what's the incentive this time? MOG TRAILER!?!?!
If it works anything like the SWTOR one SE will give you a serial number to enter. In turn the app will give a key to enter on website linking the app to your account. Then when you want to play you simply launch the app and a key is provided. But if something gets screwy on your phone you have to call them and have it removed since you will not be able to log into any sites/game.

This is just going to be a software version of the token so more than likely they would need to know your Token ID as well. My only question is if you can set it up for multiple tokens. Question now will be "is it free?"

If you own a token chances are you aren't giving your information out anyways. Lakshmi.Antonios said: » Question now will be "is it free?" I'm sure it will cost the same as the token, and provide the satchel if you buy it. this works very well with other games, but idk if se will do the same as other games. for example with wow, if u reset ur phone and need to re-sync ur app, all you have to do is get a verification code sent to your phone number instead of having to call.
no other games charge for this app, i doubt se will. I've seen other MMOs use both app and tokens for this. Tokens you paid for, app was free. I hope SE doesn't charge for the app.
pretty sure they wont charge, no other games do, it SAVES them time and money for every person that uses an authenticator, less hacked accounts and such.
Only see this being a good idea if your token is lost or broken. Id still use token and use this as a back up until a new token is received. Putting more of our information on to a Mobile device "phone, tablet etc" is only increasing the chance of being hacked and charging is more $ imo is ridiculous, they should give these options to everyone for free since We all pay a monthly fee.... they should ensure us our content is safe. Bottom line: Keep your token in a desk drawer where you no its safe & cant be hacked.

I have a blizzard authenticator app for my phone. its basically the same as an SE token because there is an individual serial key (like on the back of the SE token). Personally I dislike the entire thing, because it's just more ways to *** up your account. Only reason I have my blizzard one is because I *** up my starcraft/diablo accounts a bit so much that the ONLY way to get them working was use this. Dont see why this wouldnt be free. The blizzard app is,the blizzard token isnt. ive never heard of anyone's authenticator app being hacked or compromised.

They might not include the satchel, or it might be something different that isn't an additional storage, or just nothing at all. It came with my original XIV special edition, because I couldnt get SE to register my address for shipping to ireland the *** the only way an app like this could be hacked is if there were Trojans that could remote access ur phone and live hit ur "generate pw", not to mention they would have to open the app. the app is highly sensitive and any tampering pretty much throws the sync off, it doesnt take much to have to re-sync. luckily in other games such as wow, as i said they just send you a verification code to your phone via txt.
from my personal experience with both token and app, they are equally safe and hassle free. i will say the same can be said for SE's as well as long as they have a similar way to re-sync the app. Phone required, or could I use this with my iPod touch?
BTW, a lot of banks use this. At the end of the day, it's the same as a little plastic dongle.
One caveat... If you dumb enough to "root" your phone and install some malicious software on it (and if you look at the statistics, this happens a lot on Android), another app could theoretically steal the unique key and generate codes for your account. I've never played WoW but I have a blizzard account for other games and I just hit the app on my phone to generate a key,it doesnt text it to me the txt is for if ur app somehow gets fked up, for example like if you reset your phone and re-download the app, the app codes wont work anymore. when this happens you just goto the website and go through to options and it sends you a verification code via txt to your phone, you then use that code in your app and the app is re-synced.
If its free i'll get it for in the in case the token battery ever dies so i would not have to deal with SE CS.
Nice! Been actually wondering lately how long my token has left until it goes kaput.
Will be getting this for sure. |
