I recently built a custom box for gaming, but for various reasons I haven't really touched it. Now I would like to get ready for SOA, the FFXIV redux and some newer FPS (Crysis 3, Planetside 2) and MMO games (trying this game DragonNest out). Here's my system specs and the questions I need answered follows.
AMD FX 8320 (non OC'd)
16GB G.Skill Ripjaw ram
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard
120GB Intel 330 series SSD (main HD with Win8 Pro installed)
1TB HDD drive (storage drive)
Radeon 6870 (HIS brand with a really huge cooler I think)
Samsung 23.6" monitor x 3, also using a spare Samsung 52" HDTV with HDMI
I haven't tried any of the games out except DN on my box yet. I did the FFXIV bench and it ran Very High with a good bench. My question is, can I push 3 monitors (1920x1080) with the radeon 6870? If not, can someone recommend a better, NON BANK BREAKING alternative. I can use the 52" as a main monitor, but I would like a good Eyefinity setup for FFXIV and FPS. I would also be acceptable to a dual graphics card setup if it wont be too expensive.

Hmmmm. Well, I'm looking at the radeon 7850/7900 series now. I cant justify...$400+ on a card when I dont game that often, but I kinda want to future proof the graphics.
Edit: Also, I'm not against Geforce cards, if they can run a sort of eyefinity setup.

Nvidia's has a version of eyefinity, its just called 3D vision surround. tbh if you wanna futureproof the gpu (probably the toughest part to do it with) get thr best card you can afford. Minimum radeon7900 series in your case. I dont know prices exactly because im on my phone atm but you should be able to get a 7970 for under 400. AMD cards have always been cheaper

~300 for a 7950
or ~300 for a gtx 660ti similar performance on both.

Just got on my pc and double checked. On newegg pretty much every 7950 and 7970 also come with bioshock (not sure if original or infinite) + crysis 3.
On newegg atm and like uri says, you can get a 7950 for around 300 USD,and 7970's come in around the 400 USD mark. Its up to you how you want to spend your money for performance you deem fit,but dont forget, you can always get a 2nd card to run crossfire too down the line

I'm looking at them now, and it seems the 7950 can do what I need. I'm sure it can more than handle single monitor gaming, and I may abandon the other 2 23"monitors and just game on the tv.

You'll need a 7950/70 if you want to use a triple monitor set up and run any game at any respectable settings anyway. And honestly, a single card is pushing it if you're expecting max settings. Especially since you mentioned Crysis 3 (Crysis series is notable for pushing even high end systems to the limits). A GTX 670 or 680 can run 3 monitors natively (500 series maxes at 2 without SLI), but you'll bump into the same issue as the 7900 series with running out of VRAM trying to run a crazy game at 5760x1080 on max settings.
You have a decent set up, but the video card is lagging behind the rest. Also, the FX series is designed around OC'ing. If you have a decent cooler (high end air, liquid, or hybrid for anything above 4GHz in my opinion) you should push it up. The FX x300 series were a big boost from the x100 series, but still heat up like crazy from my understanding.
I'm running a stable 24/7 OC of 4.2GHz on an 8120 with a Corsair H80 all in one system and my idle is 18C and 30~38C under heavy load. People bash the FX series, but they overclock very well once you finesse them a little more beyond just jacking the voltage. But if you're not comfortable OC'ing, it will perform okay as well.
tldr:
You're gonna have to drop money on a nice GPU or two if you really wanna future proof.
I'm running 570's in SLI, and I can't do Crysis 3 at 5760x1080 on ultra above 60 fps.

I have a nice air cooler, and I'm sure i can OC my cpu fairly easy, but I dont have much experience in it. Looks like i'll be dropping the 400 on the 7970....

It's scary at first because you don't wanna fry your CPU (and scarier after the first time you fry a CPU), but it really isn't that bad.
Go to overlock.net and read some of the newbie guides laying around.
But more or less the easiest way is to push up your clock up on one voltage until it wont boot, then raise the voltage as little as possible until you do boot into windows. Get a program like prime95, run it and push up your voltage until you stop freezing. Not always gonna hit your goal (my goal was 4.6k, but I could never keep it stable beyond 4.4k), but you'll eventually find a place you're happy at with the balance of +vcore, v droop, and temps.
Just don't go too high too fast on your voltages, that's how you make your CPU go up in a puff of smoke.

I should overclock my CPU sometime,I know its basically unheard of that people run K series i7's at stock, but I've never pushed it over 50% with anything I do....

One note about crysis games, they're down to sloppy coding rather than pure over the top power for their requirements
