When i first played the game, I played on my PS3, playing the PS2 version. Pretty sure I had no problems whatsoever regarding losing connection having it hooked up through a router that shared connections with my PC.
This does not seem to work with the PC version and my current equipment. I either hafta go from cable modem to computer directly to stay connected, or through my router and loose connection within 5 minutes.
When calling SE at the time, they basically told me that the first way is the only correct way, and they weren't gonna help me.
No other programs/software have a problem operating through the router, which is a D-link dir-615. I'm not looking to use wireless, which this router supports... I just want it between the cable modem and the PC so I can use it's wireless feature for my PS3 in the other room.
Any suggestions?

One of two things i can think of, either there is a port thats getting messed up and needs to be open in the router or PC firewall, easy way to check firewall, just disable it and see if you have the same problem.
Another thing it could be is a IP conflict. Can you stream like a full movie from netflix, or long clips on youtube w/o it dieing? If you can, this will not be the cause.

1. if you're not using your wireless just disable it.
2. the issue is with your router/configuration, of course SE isn't going to help you with an issue on your end, they aren't the support for your PC/router.
3. don't connect directly via the modem (short of for troubleshooting), I could get into the details as to why, but just take my word for it.
4. can you check to see how long your dhcp release is set to?
5. dlink sucks
6. just read the bit about the ps3 in the other room, if you're using wireless at least enable wireless security.
7. do a looping ping on your PC and see when it drops.

From personnal experience, D-Link HATES online Video games. I have used two different D-Link routers (one at my folks place while i was on leave and the other my own that i bought....and regret) and both would kick me off FFXI very quickly and without cause or reason. Your best bet is to ditch D-link and get a different router. I am currently using a Linksys wireless router, dont remember the model or i would tell you, and have had 0 issues having my computer hooked directly to it and my xbox and ps3 both eating up its wireless.
Hope this helps OP

1. if you're not using your wireless just disable it. - I use wireless for my PS3. Actually used to play DCUO without issue using wireless, though now it's just netflix
2. the issue is with your router/configuration, of course SE isn't going to help you with an issue on your end, they aren't the support for your PC/router. - Yeah, I got that part, except they are the only software that produces the issue
3. don't connect directly via the modem (short of for troubleshooting), I could get into the details as to why, but just take my word for it. - At the moment, I have no option otherwise, working to find one.
4. can you check to see how long your dhcp release is set to? -
DHCP Enabled: Yes
5. dlink sucks - ok
6. just read the bit about the ps3 in the other room, if you're using wireless at least enable wireless security. I have this
7. do a looping ping on your PC and see when it drops.
Not sure what this means or how to do. Sorry

I can not only stream movies, I can play other MMO's without issue, including FF14, when it first came out.

gah, the quoting errors...
just because that's the obly software that yoou see having an issue, doesn't mean the issue is with the software. However I recall that recently somebody had a similar problem and they solved it by going to network settings: auxiliary network settings > connection check: and playing with that setting, default is disabled.
connecting without a router leaves yourself open for attacks more so than usual, not a good idea.
DHCP enabled/disabled isn't the dhcp release time.
k, k.
go to a command prompt and type ping -t http://www.google.com
and see if your connection drops after a few minutes.

doing the ping thing now. It's scrolling along without issue, going on 5 minutes, which is longer than my connection time usually is. waiting for it to change

I really hate to bump my own thread. But wanted to add..
Found this -
http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/game-setup-tweeking-optimizing-q/24312-ports-settings-problems-faq.html
And a place to put this information in, hoping it would help, but there's a spot that says "Firewall" that requires me to input something, and I have no idea what to put there.
Would very much welcome help. Been waiting for D-Link to get back to me.

D-LINK is GARBAGE.
I had one for about two years and it was source of half of my problems with FFXI. And I wasn't even using it through wireless for FFXI.
It was the router for the whole house though. It would cause FFXI to have troubles downloading updates or keeping a stable connection.
Try Linksys or some other reputable equipment brand instead.
Edit:
The feature you want to use is called "DMZ" or "De Militarized Zone" is a feature of routers where all non requested inbound traffic (connection attempts from other IPs to your IP which were not actively initiated from within your network) are routed to a single IP within your LAN.
It's useful if you want to set up video conferencing, bit torrent or you need to expose your PC to viruses on the internet (lol I kid).
I suggest you read on that stuff:

Hope this helps.

I'm kind of out of ideas short of attempting that thing in POL client I mentioned, or getting another router.
Should be able to get a half decent used linksys on amazon for $40

meh I haven't had any issues out of my new one with stock firmware, but I understand that it gives more management feautes, which are useless for most people.
my main regret in not flashing my old one, is that it's an old wrt54gs that had the NAT issue.
