Ok perhaps I have just confused myself or just read too much but heres my query.
I obviously already have an FFXI account. what I am looking to do is get a second account and the ultimate edition on steam is the way forward. when I buy on steam will it give me new account details..
POL etc.. or do I have to download the game again from steam?

No, you don't have to download the game again. Once the game is installed, you simply need to register a new playonline account within playonline. You may need the windower to functionally run two instances of FFXI together.

Anyone have an issue with getting the PoL CD key from Steam? Recently did the same thing to add a second account for dualboxing, and they included the FFXI CD key and the ingame item key (Destrier Beret), but I can't get a PoL CD key from them.
Am I missing something obvious here?

Since POL is now defunct, the ultimate edition comes with just one code (2 if you got the chocobo hat) which includes your POL registration, ffxi registration and all expansion packs. You need to make an SE account first, which you do here: https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/svc/register?
Then you'll be able to add a FFXI service account, and it'll ask you for that code. To get your chocobo hat, there's another place to put that later.

yeah thought so, for some reason its still prompting me for the PoL code on the SE account webpage (account made for 2nd acct of course). When I get home I'll dig into it a bit more and see what I'm doing wrong.
I set up my gf's account via steam codes, but that was before the SE system was in place, nor do I keep steam installed to be able to tell you, sorry.
when i installed the new account there were 2 CD codes.. and SE only accepted the none beret code so god knows what happened there but meh

yeah so the FFXI CD key is actually used for both the PoL key and the FFXI key prompted for when creating a square enix account.
Now to figure out why when I try and start up it says FFXI isn't installed ^^

however I just gave up and went for a clean re-install. Leaving it up and running overnight.

I made the error of allowing steam to try install because i didnt see the CD key at the side.. windower now runs from the steam folder for my mule and original ffxi folder for my main.. quite good to an extent so i can have some settings on one and not the other.
believe it or not, I did have to let Steam do the installation, of both PoL and FFXI. Makes absolutely no sense, and required the full download from Steam, along with all the damn updates. Nonetheless, its working. Frustrating, but working.
