You really have no place in this discussion unless you're someone who's actively playing more than three jobs that need weapon skills. > [Dev] Merit cap and category adjustments
The current information is about attributes, most are just complaining about weapon skills, and I have no place in the discussion?
Ny'Okay..

I think making some of the best weapon skills for certain jobs come from merits, and capping the amount of said weapon skills you can actually cap at 5/5(aka be useful) in a game where people can play all 20 jobs on 1 character is beyond stupid.

You're in a position that doesn't need more than three merit weapon skills. Therefore you say that "Oh, this is good. It makes you 'specialize' and think about what you merit."
What it actually means is you can't take weapon skills for your jobs that you really enjoy a lot if those jobs happen to be non-group-setting friendly, or if you actually play a large variety of DD roles for your group as needed.
Some of us take great pride in being versatile and we don't like when Squeenix artificially limits that and says it's to give things a "unique flavor."
If that was there mindset, they would have gone one character, one job right from the start. Like WoW.
XI has always been about versatility. Their excuses to limit this out of some misguided sense of balance is laughable, at best, and at worst a misrepresentation of the product they've been giving their long-time consumers since the very beginning.
Sure, you could "specialize" and take the weird, useless merits before. But most of us who have a clue realize that -- in most cases -- there are the right merits to take and the wrong ones.
This isn't a new argument from me. I've been raging about this since they limited combat skills years ago. It's a foolish concept.
I'm willing to put the work in. Let me have what I've earned.

I feel the opposite, that despite XI allow player to job change, the way it design this game is always for you to make choices and pick 1(or a few) "main job" that you're best at. That's what merit are for, and not just merit, but also limited inv and mission rewards.
You can only pick 1 mission reward/mission reward augment. Some of them are designed for specific job. Except after the game developed, many mission reward has a "right" or "wrong" choice. CoP ring is supposed to pick between DD mage tank, just that in the end it became Rajas only. But the original concept is to pick one role to specialize out of 3.
This is same as merit WS, except because many WS are useful, unlike Raja/Suppa, only 1 out of all choices are useful, so it became a decision making. I don't understand why so piss about it....and inb4 you can't speak if you don't play 3+ job that needs merit WS. If I can't get more than 3 merit WS, I just choose not to lv/play it, or retire the old job for new job, to keep jobs have right WS. I still made the choice to give up something just like you did.
Same for limited inv, it's extremely hard to carry enough gears for 10+ jobs if you want to play them to fullest potential unless you enjoy 30 min of job change and muling gears.
And why against "main job" concept, just because this game can job change? Those who plays MMORPG more or less enjoys certain identity in the MMO, and allowing every char being versatile just kills identity concept. If this is FFXI's original design concept, they wouldn't make you pick mission reward, and wouldn't release THIS MANY gears, they'd make it like FFXIV.

I always thought of merits as additional benefits on top of what the caps actually are.
If people are wanting to be able to cap everything in all categories, what's the point of having the system at all? Just raise the skill caps and make the job abilities and traits part of leveling.
And I really don't understand the "arbitrary limit" complaint. The entire game is a set of fake limits - they could create characters that are level 100,000. Mythics could require 1 alexandrite, or a trillion. I technically could stay in dynamis every waking hour - except that sometimes I'd rather be out in Jeuno running around in subligar at 700% movement speed.
Actually, I'd most rather be stepping up little cracks that are larger than 5 game inches.

Ragnarok.Jessikah said: »Do I really need to point out the flaws in this statement? Come on. How is it flawed? Versatility simply means that it's an option. You're not going to ignore inviting a Warrior to an event solely because he isn't fully-merited as Warrior.
If a Blue Mage can get an invite to Voidwatch with barely 30 spells without anyone batting an eye (I've seen it happen before), then I sure as heck don't think people are going to not invite him on the grounds that he doesn't have Requiescat 5/5 merited.
to be fair (if that's the right word)
most people don't expect a lot from a blue mage other than that since most blue mages don't bring much to the table and it has been that way for a long time which of course ties into the people generally suck speech.
the vw procs was a good way to get blue in, but if it's in a higher end PUG or good group you don't need one if you're killing the mob in 2 to 5 mins

The merit system is the single most limiting part of the game. It arbitrarily limits us after 75 levels of freedom. Apart from the merit system, performance on any given job is purely based on skill and equipment. At 75, you're arbitrarily limited to X merits per category and decide what job you're going to be good at.
So yeah, some pieces of gear (Rajas, Suppa, etc.) are also limiting. I'd argue that's similarly stupid.
I'm not arguing that SE agrees with me (they obviously don't). I'm arguing that the game would be a better game if they had stuck with the concept of versatility and the job system and left out these arbitrary limitations.

I don't see the point of even making them merited if you're just going to unlock all of them. Though I will agree they need to raise the cap.
Having to unlock all of them would be a massive time sink, something which SE loves (and is to some degree necessary in a MMO).

Given how players grind everything as soon as it's out, getting the exp for all the merit ws wouldn't take more than a week heh.
I'd love to be able to merit more WSs, then again Idm having to pick which to have and have my own set of choices.
It's pretty much in line with what SE said about not wanting to raise the cap on JS merits, although in that case the fact some JS merits are simply horrible doesn't really favor differentiation as much as they'd hoped.

I am not understanding what the big deal is about merit ws being limited to 3 honestly. I mean, if you are hurting that badly for spots why not make and empyrean. They are easy enough to make these days to where it doesn't have to be for a main job..... Or go crazy and make a relic for your favorite job.
I just don't understand it, if you have a plenty of DD jobs needing merit ws, there are a lot of ways to get around the 3 max limit.
edIT: also there was a guy saying that "he could understand if the merit ws weren't better than the empyrean/relic/mythic counterparts blah blah blah". Unless things have Drastically changed in the last 3 weeks i haven't played, no way in hell that is true. and i can't believe no one has said anything about it.

You really didn't think this through, did you?
The primary reasons relics became useful again is because of Merit WS.

Um... they are. With a couple of exceptions such as Ukko's Fury and Chant du Cygne, every merit WS outpaces their respective weapon class's Mythic, Empyrean, and Relic weaponskills.

You're in a position that doesn't need more than three merit weapon skills. Therefore you say that "Oh, this is good. It makes you 'specialize' and think about what you merit." You're really mislead on my view.. This wasn't supposed to be about me at all either. I was referring to everyone in my past posts.
I, too, wish for us to be able to merit more than 3 weapon skills maxed, I really do. All I'm saying is I understand why SE chose to limit it.
So please don't act like you know me because you can check my profile to see what jobs I have and base your decision to exclude me from your side, because I'm actually on it. I want that to be clear.
Don't forget jobs have multiple skills. I would absolutely love to have the extra weapon skills for my jobs, but the more important ones are.. well.. simply that; more important.
I've made many sacrifices of things I'd like to merit, but can't because I don't have the space. So while I.. "only have four jobs," i'm also a victim in the lack of things to be merited.
Once again.. really didn't want that to be about me, but you insisted I wasn't apart of the inconvenience when I sure as hell am.
Also..

I do, i favor drk over all other jobs. However, i leveled bst for solo dyna farming then i've chosen to delevel shoha to merit ruinator 5/5, this because one member of my group have quit.
I would like to be able to merit shoha 5/5 again without sacrificing ruinator.
I think 5 merit WS would be great from my point of view.

| Good evening, Vana'diel!
As a part of the character growth system, we will be increasing merit caps and adding new categories in the future. However, we will not be removing the cap entirely.
The reason we are not removing this cap is because it would allow players to ultimately max out everything and cause characters to become universal or too versatile.
The whole idea behind merit points is to offer many choices and allow players to choose based on their preferences. This way, even though it’s the same job amongst everyone, their proficiencies and roles are different. With that said, by totally removing the cap from merit points, the fundamental purpose would be lost. | |
