want to go into gritty detail of human genitalia with their children?.

1) wash it if it's gritty (jk)

2) I always felt that if you tell your children things yourself then you are making sure it's in the spin and context you want it delivered. If you don't care then I wonder why you have children. I'm sterile myself but I'm still fairly certain that despite people being irresponsible it doesn't happen "by accident".

My parents never did give me the birds and bees talk. :-( When I was in about 7th grade they gave me a book on the subject. Well, sort of a book. It was a clump of papers from a book that instead of buying, they'd just copied all the pages and stapled them together.

Anyhow, it had very wrong information. I remember in particular that on the subject of menstruation, it said a woman's blood would stop on its own when she got into water, and that is why baths were safe to have on a period. I think perhaps if my folks had had the guts to talk to me about it themselves, I wouldn't have lived half my life thinking that I could jump into a pool without protection on my period and the blood would just stop until I got out of the pool because a book said so. xD

I also didn't know what a male orgasm was until halfway through sex ed as a sophomore in high school. :-( I still think there's stuff on it I just don't know about.

If I have kids, I think I will give them the talk myself, when they are young enough to not be embarrassed about it but old enough to understand the basics. I don't know what age that is, I guess it would vary for every child.

lol we had a sex ed class in the 5th grade taught by the parish pastor lol... surprisingly enough it was pretty graphic and fairly informative... I mean the theme was still abstinence but they did teach you a good deal about the shabang...

I always assumed 10-12 as well ... however, you would be amazed at some of the questions a 5~6 year old will ask. We have had watered down honest discussions with our 6 year old already. Mostly just about why boys and girls are different and where babies come from.

When the time comes, going into the actual talk won't be so bad, since he has prepped us early. The key is to just be honest. As much as I would love for my child to stay abstinent until he is older, I will not lie to myself and say it will happen with 100% confidence.

... Holy ***. You're actually argueing against the birds and the bees talk with your offspring?

And what the hell is the "gritty detail" about human genitalia? It's this very same mentality of shame (gritty? really?) that the parents in this article are coming from. Be ashamed and never talk about it. I'm pretty sure I'm qualified to answer about 90% of my kid's questions as their very existance qualifies me as an expert owner. If there is a specific question my kid has about their junk that I can't answer, do you honestly think I want them talking to a teacher who's only qualification over my own is that they took a test one time about the subject matter in which they were going to recite to a class full of zombified teenagers over a qualified doctor?

No, I'm arguing against you believing that all parents are going to cover the sex talk properly with their children or that parents even know themselves the details of STDs and birth control options. Who would a child rather ask about the details of anal sex? Mom or someone teaching a health class? Depends on the child and from this thread alone we've seen how competent some parents can be.

If you're lucky to be born into a family where mom and/or dad sit you down and explain all of your burning questions about sex then great because I applaud those parents but what about the other people? Should they be doomed to ignorance because their parents lack the knowledge?

You may have the knowledge but I can point you to dozens of parents who will go simply up the wall if their kid asks about genital worts or the crabs. The simple conversation of sex is so frightening to these individuals that they would rather ignore the curiosity of their offspring than talk about it. Such children/teens need somewhere they can gain some basic knowledge and that is what schools are for.

Don't feel bad, mine didn't either. Very Catholic shame type, where if we don't talk about it, maybe it'll go away. Which is why I'm very pro open lines of communication.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of aspects of parenting that I've picked up from my dad and I'm keeping. Like, essentially, I'm going to start out with 8-10 kids. Doesn't mean I'll end up with that many. Most of life lessons will be learned, not taught, through humiliation and pain. You want to play in the street timmy? Go ahead. Oh, you got hit by a car? Won't be doing that again, will you.

Lost me there. I don't care about anyone elses kids by my own. Referencing my example above, the neighborhood children clear out of the street when I enter the neighborhood. Quickly. Like "OHMYGODITSFIVETHIRTYALREADYTHESILVERCAROFPAINISHEREAGAINRUNFORYOURLIVES" quickly.

Yeah... 8 to me just seems a little to young for them to care or put anything into practice or really remember... I just remember the kids in my GS getting all happy on eachother starting in about the 6th grade... oh dry humping you so crazy...

when there 6 and asking stuff do you just tell em stuff like well when mommy and daddy love eachother?

My parents never mentioned sex to me. They thought Los Angeles Unified School District's sex-ed curriculum was sufficient! lol

Oh God! Some memories flooding back!

Actually, I think I was introduced to the basics of sex by playing Barbies with other girls. Somebody takes the Ken and lays it on top of Barbie while they're both stripped, then you stuff miscellaneous, wadded up Barbie clothes or cloth under the clothes that Barbie is wearing. Instant epiphany! "Oh! So that's how that goes?"

Yeah...I never really had the "sex talk". There was sex-ed from middle school up, and I was put on birth control at fifteen, but that was more for medical reasons. (Well, I think my mom had ideas in the back of her mind too since I was dating.)

I'm talking age... gr9 is 13/14 years old unless I'm mathing wrong, and it's becoming more common for kids (girls mainly) to have had sex before that... No joke, they are just that slutty.

I think its actually better in school. It's a bit more standardized and they also tell you about STI's and HIV etc.

Then again the books in HS tell you gonorrhea is "painful urination" and "discharge." It really should be edited to say "its like peeing shards of glass."

Holy Jehoshaphat, I wasn't even developed until well after I was 14 and wasn't allowed to group date until I was a high school sophomore and wasn't to solo date until I was a junior. If someone had wanted to even touch me at 13-14 years old I would have been grossed out and terrified. Those girls are braver than me!

Edit: Then again when I was 5 years old I had the basic size/weight of a 3 year old, and when my parents took me to kindergarten at age 5 they told them I couldn't come in because I was too small and immature. I had to attend pre-kindergarten for a year instead. So I was just a late bloomer all-round, I think.

That makes more sense lol... I thought you were saying 8 years old... At that age I think its less being "slutty" and more being influenced by culture and hormones combined with a lack of understanding...

*** to me anyways arehe he/she *** that sleep around without regard for the other person... if you're open about sexinle and the other person knows its just for fun too... then you're just a person that enjoys sex lol...

Your feelings about your child are irrelevant to the fact that sex ed gives children choices where they might not have had any. You speak of not being taught sex ed yet you "don't care" about anyone else now you've avoided the immediate pitfalls of ignorance.

Your opinion, but not one I share.

I'm all for giving people choices and equipping them with as much knowledge as possible be that from parents and schools alike. What teens do with that knowledge is their own business but just because your child is in a better position than others doesn't mean we abandon everyone else in my view of it.

Sort of, but I have actually explained about woman having an egg and whatnot as well. I try to go all scientific on him, so he still doesn't completely understand, cause by the Goddess he is only 6! But I don't lie to him either. He knows that his balls are called testicles and that girls do not have them. He knows that girls have breasts (which funnily enough he seems to really like and points out the big ones on anime girls.) But basically the open communication lines are already there and he knows if he has anything he wants to talk to us about, he can.

I think it might be a little bit easier for me because I had a very open line of communication with my parents. His dad did not have this, so we usually talk thru things together as a family.

Are you for giving them knowledge or just the knowledge you approve of? There are many people out there who think that providing a specific set of knowledge is the best course... in doing so shelter them from many other sources of information... so is it about opening their horizons or directing them to where you think they should be?

Speaking of sex ed, I recall my parents giving me some sparse information on the topic like condoms, sperm, periods and whatever else came out in their talks with me. Nothing detailed but simple tidbits of information along with being repeatedly told:

"I don't want any grandchildren, you better not have any kids."

One amusing memory even involved being told if a vagina smells funny that the female wasn't doing a good job of washing it and thus sex with her was less than ideal. My grandmother always did have a way with words but I forgive her none the less.

It wasn't till health class in HS and the detailed information from after school discussions held by a 3rd party program affiliated with the school that I really understood some of the details. The lovely and disgusting details but details none the less. I consider those discussions to be some of the most valuable things I took away from HS on the whole and likely why I am so pro sex ed whenever the topic inevitably arises.

Later on my parents would add more advice to what they had originally filtered through but only after they themselves had become more comfortable with the topic.
