Ok I give up. I have been fighting with this for a little bit now, and I need some help.

Anytime I have something running on my computer that is java related, my GPU is running at full speed and heats up to over 70C. This can be anything from a web app, to minecraft. I see no lag when this happens so my performance isn't suffering. I am just not a fan of my GPU running full speed and heating up.

I am running a AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series and I have the latest drivers. I am also running 64 bit java with windows 7 64 bit. This just does not make sense and I have been looking for some kind of information for a while.

I had 32 bit java installed initially but then upgraded to 64 bit. That was a bit of trouble because the 32 bit version would not uninstall for some reason. I ended up screwing up the install and having reinstall to uninstall. Currently I only have 64 bit java running and installed now that I have gotten the other versions cleaned up.

I do have CCC and because ATI isnt really able to control the fan like it should, I have to set it higher normally. It is set at 50% which, if its on automatic it would be only running at 20%.

My concern is the fact my GPU is running hard for nothing.

Intel i7 2600k 3.40 GHz overclocked to 4.20 GHz
16g of dual channel ram, I cant remember the rest of the specs on them.

graphics card is AMD Radeon HD 6900 with 2gigs of memory. I have 2, only one is in atm.

I think my power supply is a 860 watt. I built this computer at Christmas time and the power supply was enough for 2 graphics cards, I ended up taking out one because it just ended up being too hot for summer. they are overkill for anything I do atm...

sorry for the late response.

reinstall java

Thank you this was very helpful, not like I haven't tried this a few times already.

Sarcasm aside, I have done everything that is simple like your suggestion. Further expanding, I only started noticing this recently after I tried installing the 64 bit version. Since then I have uninstalled both and reinstalled the 32 bit version to see if I could get it back to normal and it still maxed out.

Is it only an issue with Java? If not, it could be your motherboard.

what type of radeon card is it?

i just got an HD 6850 sapphire and i was having problems with it running higher temps than i'd like in idle (55~60C) so i just used sapphire trixx program to underclock it when its on idle only.

now idle temp is 39~44C (44 is highest i've seen while watching a couple videos on youtube)

edit- also did you try making sure your using the latest version of CCC? there was a small update few months back i believe.

I have witnessed java do something similar to my machine. It almost overheats one of my laptops each time it loads, so maybe I can help diagnose.

See if you can set Java up to not attempt to use "DirectCompute".

I have a DirectCompute capable GPU, but my OS does not have any capability (Windows XP). It's a programming interface which allows for programs to use the GPU to accelerate processing of math intensive tasks.

Unfortunately it's not working right for you and disabling it might help diminish the problem.

This is only an issue with Java. If I run something like Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, 3+ windows of FFXI, I only get temps of 50C maybe.

Mozilla, IE, anything with Java.

I wasn't able to find much on how to disable this for Windows 7. Do you have any clue on how to do this or more information that might help me to some how to?

Right. Contact the support center, receive and email giving a check list of bs things to do and tools to downloaded and run. Then not hear anything back. I would not be coming for help if had not already exhausted options such as manufacturer support contact and their support troubleshooting process. I have also searched for known issues withing AMD for my card and java.

/waits for the next 4-7 word obvious solution that I have already tried.

I don't think you can disable DirectCompute on Windows itself. I meant see if you can disable it on Java, to prevent Java from trying to start the 3D part of your graphics card up, making it go hot.

Here's hoping you cross-posted this problem in a hardware forum, then.
Asking for obscure hardware troubleshooting on a gaming forum is kind of stupid.
