FFXIV Computer Build
By yuyi 2012-06-17 23:58:07
Alright, I'm sure you guys are tired of people asking "should I get this or this or this or this" for their computer builds for this game.
But! I have looked through and have chosen a few components for the PC I'm wanting to build for the game. I currently run FFXIV on minimum settings, and STILL get lag. Maybe it's the 3xxx series ATI card I hvae, maybe it's the dual core processor I have, or maybe it's both!
Anyways, here are the items I've chosen for my new PC (the main parts, anyways):
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106010&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&PageSize=10&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625
MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=13-128-519&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=true&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&chkPurchaseMark=on&Keywords=gaming&Page=2#scrollFullInfo
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145345
Grand Total of about $450, and honestly I'm not looking to go over that for my PC. If there are any modifications I can make for a better PC, or if some of my choices are just flat-out stupid, please let me know!
Thanks in advance guys!

That setup is really good, can play future games as well.

For MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128510
Worth the extra $10 on the mobo.
I would bump up to the 8120 over that CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103961
or if money is a concern
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727
Edit to add: If you are going with the FX series plan to get a decent heatsink for it. They run very hot, and if you plan on OC'ing above 4GHz I would highly suggest either a high end air cooler if you have the room or an all-in-one water cooler (the Corsair H-series).
By yuyi 2012-06-18 00:09:03
See, I was going to go after the 8-core, but I wasn't sure if the higher GH was better or a little lower frequency and 2 more cores for FFXIV. Agh, so many options!

If you don't plan on overclocking at all, you'll be better off with a locked intel over the FX series. These were basically designed to overclock.

I probably will overclock, as I'm looking to run FFXIV on MAX settings.

I'll always be an advocate of Intel over AMD tbh, especially given my recent experience with AMD chips. Can't really go wrong with a 2500~2700k, or a third generation.

I'm by no means a fan boy on either side of the CPU world. I have an 8120, did it live up to my expectations? No. Is it still a decent chip for the price? Yup, OC's like a champ, can easily hit 4.5GHz+ with good cooling.
Honestly though. If you are going solely for a gaming PC and don't mind spending a little more money, I would go with the i5 2500k or i7 2600k. If you flat out don't care about cost at all, go for ivy bridge... but it isn't enough of an upgrade over sandy for me to advocate it.

yeah I wouldn't strongly urge anyone toward an ivy bridge unless they really want the best of the best or do a lot of video encoding. 2500k is more than sufficient for gaming, you won't have many video card configurations that bottleneck off of a 4.5GHz 2500k, if any.
By yuyi 2012-06-18 00:43:40
I see I see. Well, I'm really not wanting to go over $500 for a new desktop. But then again, I don't know if I can meet my expectations with a $500 desktop, so I suppose I'm going for the best a PC will go for that budget.
I personally don't see Intel CPU's being better than an AMD CPU compared to the pricing. I could be wrong, because all I see is the paper details, but that's what it seems like. People are telling me that ATI cards are worse than NVidia cards, and others tell me the exact opposite. I'm really centering my PC around FFXIV, so I'm looking for the absolute BEST PC for FFXIV in my budget.

For that $500 budget what all do you need? Case/PSU/DVD drive/the whole shabang?
AMD is definitely the way to go budget wise.

I already have the Case, Power Supply, hard drive, etc.
I'm just looking for those 4 components in my $500 budget.

Do you care about micro-ATX vs ATX? And what about an after market heatsink?
Edit: to clarify for the mobo size, does your case support both, or just one or the other?

Case will support both. For heatsink, I suppose I'd have to buy this as well:

Not bad from what it looks like, and is a decent price.
EDIT: I don't believe I see that's it's compatible with the CPU I've chosen..

ATI/AMD parts are cheaper and somewhat less effective than Intel/nVidia. It isn't always like this, but in the current generation that's the case.
For $500 you'd probably be disappointed with your performance. Tbh it isn't terribly worth building a PC for a current gen game without going a bit higher than that... you could get away with:
Processor: Intel i5 2500k - $220
Motherboard: ASUS Z77-V - $125 (rebate)
GPU: EVGA GTX560ti - $190 (rebate)
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB - $55
= $590
The GPU is rather wimpy in this day and age but isn't bad, I'd say mid range or so, maybe low-mid range.
Could lower it to $500 or less, but there'd have to be some power compromises. Until we see how much the 2.0 engine improves XIV's performance, you'll want to target the higher part of the scale, and even after probably.

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948 (basically the same as a 560, just cheaper).
Puts you at your 500 budget almost to the t. And the hyper 212 is a nice one for the price, but you need low profile RAM to install it.
The biggest downfall is the GPU. I don't know if you'll be able to run 14 at full settings on a large display (like 1440x900 and higher) on such a budget. I would highly suggest at least a GTX 570, it would make a major impact, but kill your budget.
By yuyi 2012-06-18 01:20:58
Would this GPU make for a middle ground between the 560ti and the 6870?

There really isn't much of a difference between the 6870 and the 6950 as far as I know.

Get this if you have a power supply and the cooling to handle it.

6950 were only really good when they had reference boards that could flash to 6970!
otherwise cost:performance ratio is better for the 6870 even though it's a tad slower...

hwcompare is good for a quick glance at things. But some times, real world performance is just different since hwcompare is basically all theoretical numbers.

Yeah, that's why I'm completely lost on the GPU and CPU side. All I'm finding are details from the manufacturers. It's so confusing :S

Yes, indeed. Just make sure you do pick up that coolermaster hyper 212 cooler you posted a while back!

I totally blanked and forgot about the 480. The price has dropped so much that they are amazing for their price. It runs almost on par with a stock 570 and can overclock pretty well.
Really if you are running a 600W+ PSU and have a decent cooling set up with your case I would highly suggest it. But they are power hogs and generate a lot of heat (same applies to the FX series for CPUs).

Yup, that. I'm kind of an nVidia fan boy though, but anyone will tell you that it is a beast of a card for the price.

From what you know, is the 480 compatible with all of the other pieces you gave me?

Don't see why it shouldn't be. Just need the power to run it and make sure you don't overheat it.
Just make sure you flash the BIOS on the mobo for that CPU though. It will natively run AM3+, but the newer BIOS's help performance.
Edit: For that CPU and Mobo combo I posted. Not all mobos will need a BIOS flash.

That is an absolutely amazing card. I can't speak any ill of the one I had aside from the temperature, but that isn't a huge deal.
Also I'm not sure if all 480s are like this, but my EVGA one had some intrusive copper pipes that made it amazingly hard to find an aftermarket VGA cooler that would fit on it.
