The Beast Within -- A Guide To Blue Mage

They wont do much for WS, but Hoxne brings those weapon options closer, because it makes tp gain the same for all of them. By all of them I mean Prime, Tizona, Maxentius and Naegling. Hoxne also significantly boosts avg damage of CDC and Fast Blade II, but not enough to make them competitive against other options, but enough to make them very usable if you need them for skillchain.

Problem with running Imperator numbers in Sim is I don't know fstp and wsc for this WS. The ones on Bgwiki are very wrong, based on some fast JP guy test, who have no idea how to do it.

From some damage test made by few people we know it's closer to prime katana WS stats, but I don't think anyone 100% confirmed exact values.

So I've looked quite a bit here on these forums and on the bg wiki and still cannot find even a mention of a TP set that is not Tizona AM3. What do people use with Naegling/Caliburnus/Non AM Tizona etc? Is it really gleti's pants with those UNM wristbands?

Also the blue mage guides and gear sets are quite lacking compared to other jobs. No mention of even a black halo WS set on the BG job guide.

TP set can atm be summed up with use malig outside of gleti's legs if you got the TA aug on it, though theres alterations you can make to fit in null cape/belt and such as you like such as alabaster earring. there's a solid set in the limbus gear but that's gonna take a while. Gazu's are there just to compensate no haste belt, and honestly only factor in the quickest path to WS according to sims.

BH set is going to basically be the SB WS set with possibly some accessory changes to MND but its pretty minor all around.

Off recent topic and random question:
Is there something weird with learning spells in Limbus?

I recently added BLU to one of my mules and was attempting to learn Thrashing Assault in Temenos but after 20+ kills, nothing. The mule already had Capped SKill plus an extra 46 skill from gear and Mastered but no dice. Eventually said screw it and went to Meebles and got it immediately.

So is learning in Limbus just not possible? Or is it something weird with their level adjustment system that might be blocking it?

Of course, I might be the only weirdo who even attempted to learn a spell in Limbus so there might not be any data on this at all haha.

Looks like someone added it to the wiki list, so I assume it must be learnable there. Either that or they are just trying to troll people.

I learned it there within 3 kills, definitely able to learn it within Limbus. I set my level to 119 within Limbus if that matters.

I see. I was on 130 but I didn't think it would have mattered. Oh well, if I try Limbus for a spell in the future, I'll drop it to 119 and see if that helps. Thanks for the information.

took my wife there to learn it as I was curious if you could it took quite awhile but we just set the mobs to 135 and kept killing til she learned it.

Is there any up to date BLU DPS spreadsheet available that includes recent changes from like end of 2025-2026?

I believe everyone has just moved on to the simulator now. It works pretty good, honestly.

With the advent of +4s which BLU Relics are worth +4'ing? Still just Legs? Maybe Body?

Head and feet are still (even more now) the BiS for blue magic skill. Whether the extra 1 skill is worth it is up to you (though it also gives more eva/meva/MDB)

I've never used the body or hands because they're trash. Legs are an obvious upgrade.

Minor niche for the hands is they're a nice subtle blow swap for spells while keeping high acc/macc, since a lot of the phys spells blu has are multi-hit. Otherwise rest is spot on

Ah yes, the trash that someone entered prompts into, spat out that Gazu bracelets are BiS, and then posted. If you use your brain for 10 seconds you'd realize there's better options

If you want to use the simulator as a start point, fine... but look into things and make educated decisions based on what you're actually fighting.

When I see people wearing Gazu's, especially on BLU, it's like a noob red flag. Kinda like ML50 people who wear full ambu gear. "Wow you boughts your MLs, you're good now right?"

Relic body is a good piece for Reaving Wind and Feather Tickle giving you delay reduction while also having decent macc. Whether its needed or not depends if you are ever going to be doing the Gaol fights that needs BLU to reduce TP.

Sadly, this page has Gazu +1 listed in the Thibron AM3 set. So many people read these and blindly follow them without any consideration to anything else.

I still remember when a sim said NIN should be using AGI on Andartia's Mantle in it's TP set and the reasoning was so NIN could have a certain baseline for "Ranged Accuracy". It was the most absurd suggestion I have ever seen posted from a sim, but it's not the sim's fault that someone put parameters in there and it spits out exactly what you entered, even if it makes little sense in reality. I'm sure someone made a JSE cape with AGI augment, because "sim said so"


I've accepted that this is VERY hard for people, and for some reason, it's hard for people to READ gear stats and make an informed decision on their own. It's like paralyzing decision-making.

The sim should just remove TP sets. Yeah I said it.

Failing that, remove gear other than +4s, odyssey, empy, limbus and malignance from being included in TP sets.

What kind of ambu capes would I be looking at as BLU aside from the usual Dex/Acc TP cape and STR WS cape? I know I could get really deep into it and have a ton of capes but let's just say as a bare minimum what stat spread I would want to have on capes for casting for physical spells, magical spell damage, magic accuracy for stuff like reaving/tickle. I know I need a Fast Cast cape but not sure if it's feasible to combine that with another one.

TP wise you can technically get away with null shawl, does its functions fine and saves you a TP slot and also functions as your best phys spell cape due to the acc/macc combo, standard STR/WSD cape is going to cover you for the most part, then you got nuke cape and possibly a FC cape though the FC cape can also be consolidated into fi follet if you have other mages, but its good to have one with actual stats provided you still need the FC provided as otherwise null shawl is gonna be your best macc cape more than likely.

Those are your primary ones imo

Can't compare cdc to fast blade ii, FB2 with ampulla it's an absolute beast of a WS when properly buffed, can reach 99k fb2 spam under HQ buffs, iirc it was at 1k with warcry, 1400 or 1500 without it!
Ampulla gives it much needed consistency to FB2, while CDC doesn't scale ftp/dmg with tp. Sure, CDC improves with ampulla, but it's nowhere near comparable to "dmg scale with tp" ftp replicating ws!
What truly limits Ampulla FB2 is Onion Sword III accessibility and the fact that dual wielding with Hoxne won't be "cheap" in the long run lol. RDM it's prob even better than BLU at using FB2, and Temper high TA allows rdm to save some gil by overwriting DA procs!

Between ws frequency increase and DA procs for ftp, Ampulla FB2 is very competitive if you ask me, just not easily accessible to everyone! I usually end up using FB2 as BRD in dynad w3 or in Sortie 8 boss runs, since can be used on E and G for Light with Savage (don't bother using FB2 unless you are dual wielding, for the love of god)!

What i'm really curious about is Ampulla DNC using Fast Blade II, and Karambit if able to /MNK or Hepatizon h2h with SJ locked.. cause according to my sims those could be pretty good situationally!
