Netflix creates pro-SOPA superpac

I promise you that people in power don't want the internet to die or for people to stop using the internet to disseminate information and opinions. Much of Wall Street itself is now a collection of competing computers rigged to observe human actions in order to turn a profit through High Frequency Trading on the stock market. The information on the internet is just as useful to the government as to the people who create, view and respond to it. What they want is control of a slightly too chaotic system. And since when is a small modicum of chaos a bad thing? The more people attempt to control the internet the worse off we're all be for it. I'm aware that industries lose money to pirates yearly but this avenue to solve the problem is destructive to the internet as a whole. They want to snatch away profit from the pirates? Innovate. Evolve. Adapt. Because you'll never stop the idea of piracy. You can however work around it to great effect as Netflix once did. Oh, I agree completely with this. I don't see the chaos as a bad thing at all. In fact, I would like there to be greater competition and less patents as a whole in software and implementation. (Software patents should resemble fashion patents in my opinion - pretty much non-existent) I'm just saying that nobody wants there to be an information blockage other than things that could cost profits. Twitter and Facebook will continue to shine because they make it so incredibly easy to track what people do. And when you have that much raw data, it's relatively easy to extrapolate based on it. Also, seriously, from the article.
Quote: Now the streaming content giant has created its own super PAC, whose main goal is to promote SOPA-like legislation. Netflix hasn't even made its first statement yet. This is literally just grapevine discussion. Quetzalcoatl.Xueye said: » Also, seriously, from the article. What is the name of their superpac anyways? The article doesn't stat that as far as I can see.
lol, maybe people are overreacting.

No, I'm saying that what the article is saying is conjecture. Netflix strives because they innovate. They do, however, have very good reason to lobby for things like network infrastructure, shipping reforms, net neutrality, etc. Bismarck.Dracondria said: » More like 10 mins (if your download speed is decent :/) my problem is more of a 'I can't find the shows I want on any site' rather then a download speed problem. SOPA/PIPA CHSWHATEVERTHEFUCK has nothing to do with stopping piracy. These bills are cleverly designed/worded government censorship bills. 'Censorship and socialisim go together like birds of a feather"...telling you were only a stones throw from being the USSA
Netflix has made a superpac, but its not actually in anyway of support of sopa. RT spun it to make it sound like it was because they took the source wrong.
This is the source story: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0412/74929.html In yet another move to boost its Washington profile, Netflix has formed a political action committee, new federal records indicate. Called FLIXPAC, the committee may now make contributions donations directly to federal candidates — up to $5,000 per election. Continue Reading And it provides Netflix with another political tool with which to aggressively press a pro-intellectual property, anti-video piracy agenda — an effort it began in earnest in 2010, when the company began heavily investing in federal lobbying efforts. In 2009, for example, Netflix spent just $20,000 on federal lobbying, congressional records show. But that figure grew to $130,000 in 2010 and $500,000 in 2011, as legislative debates over the Stop Online Piracy Act, Protect IP Act and Video Privacy Protection Act raged. Last year, the company reported using the services of nearly two-dozen registered lobbyists, including in-house advocates and those from three lobbying firms — Franklin Square Group, Monument Policy Group and Kountoupes Consulting. A company representative could not immediately be reached for comment. New federal filings show FLIXPAC will be based in Los Gatos, Calif. Its treasurer is Christopher Libertelli. the bold part is where RT mistakenly tied this new superpac to be pro sopa. Leviathan.Snakeslice said: » This is a dumb move by netflix imo, First step is stopping piracy, next will be getting rid of rental businesses like redbox and netflix their self. They don't see they are opening pandora's box. you can't get rid of piracy... Sylph.Kimble said: » Its not really shocking that netflix is supporting it though, piracy hurts their business. They are supporting ending online piracy, can't really get upset with that. not really, and you can. Pirates will always exist, most of the hardcore ones I know wouldn't buy the stuff if they didn't pirate, so nobody is losing anything. There's one way to hinder piracy a great deal, make better/cheaper products/services, the masses will go for it, and the pirates as always are negligible. God dammit Netflix. You keep giving me more and more reasons to cancel my subscription.

You keep giving me more and more reasons to cancel my subscription. Not that you're obligated in anyway to stick with netflix, but it's mostly not their fault. The entertainment industry saw the windfall Netflix stumbled upon and decided they wanted a bigger piece of the pie. Netflix didn't just up their prices because they became greedy overnight. The entertainment industry did. Economically speaking raising the prices would cause lower subscribers, and fewer new customers, which could very well (and has) eaten into their profits. They were forced to give more money over to the entertainment industry as contracts came up for renewal, which forced them to raise their prices. Siren.Kalilla said: » Would rather see netflix just die anyways, they know members want better material on streaming but they ignore them lol Netflix is very much at the mercy of the copyright holders. The reason netflix can't move onto a fully streaming platform is because the fees that copyright holders would charge would be too large to cover the costs, and they'd have to raise prices even higher. Using physical media they can still operate more or less as rental store in that they buy a certain number of a given movie and can only rent that much out at a given time. If anything it's another reason to be mad at the entertainment industry. Idk, they raised the price per month for their streaming and I swear I think their selection got worse. I couldn't do it anymore, it just isn't worth paying for a selection that bad which has nothing but random stuff no one really wants to watch.
Your right, it did get worse. A lot of the copyright holders figured they could get more money by selling physical copies or electronic copies of movies and shows that you had to pay full purchase price for. They chose not to renew contracts.
But again it's more of a problem with the copyright holders. However, even if it's not netflix's fault, it may very well not be worth it anymore to use netflix because they simply are unable anymore to provide the quality of service that they used to. Thats fine if you don't want to use netflix, Just don't think people should let a false report influence them.
Yeah, cancel netflix because they have a crappy selection, not because of inaccurate reporting.
Siren.Kalilla said: » Sylph.Kimble said: » Can't you get like, a physical copy of any movie sent to you? I've only had an issue with 1 out of like 50+ movies I got from them, but they got too expensive for both services so I dropped them (that and I don't have the bandwidth to watch without severe lag when watching). Lakshmi.Sparthosx said: » Can't wait to see some innocents thrown in jail for using Happy Birthday in a Youtube montage though. 25 years will teach people to use copyrighted material without permission. loophole! XD I find 7.99$/month for 2-3 months a great way to catch up on cable TV. less than 30$ and I catch up on a ton of shows and movies. Much cheaper than cable o_O
Siren.Kalilla said: » Sylph.Kimble said: » Can't you get like, a physical copy of any movie sent to you? Also another link stating that the story was false. Leviathan.Catnipthief said: » I don't like this, but I'm keeping my netflix account anyway... piracy won't stop at all.... ever... the only reason I don't is cause i'm a lazy *** and don't want to have to sit for an hour downloading one thing ... lol Catnip what episode of Supernatural you get that gif from? This is a perfect example of why I think people should educate themselves and not just believe anything that someone posts.
Personally I couldn't stand their streaming quality or the lack of options, even before this. I have Amazon prime (Actually because of the shipping being included) and for how little I use it, it is a much better deal.

Oh Jesus Christ, get down off of your high horse and join us peasants below. Wait, so im a high horse because I didn't take an article at face value and looked into it my self?
The first thing that kinda tipped me off that something was off was it failed to even say what the SuperPac was called. In no way am I saying i'm better then anyone else, i'm just saying before people get all in an uproar, they should try and get more info on the situation. I kinda get the vibe from this thread, that people had an issue with netflix's service which I understand, you choose to pay for what services you want. But people are using this false report to some how justify getting rid of their service. If you don't want it, just get rid of it. It did have a name, but yeah, they already had a huge backlash and changed their stance back when SOPA was still being dealt with. |
