Good advice would be to seriously reconsider not playing it on the xbox. Buy this ...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XBOX-360-Wireless-USB-Games-Receiver-4-PC-controller-/180804364963?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN&hash=item2a18c7aaa3

and stick to PC.

from what I understand you're not supposed to be able to link a new Playonline ID to your current gamertag, but you should be able to call them (not sure if xbox or pol, prolly xbox) to work around that, but you can make a new character as long as it's on the same pol id, aka account.

hope your xbox doesn't lock up like mine do though...

Any new computer should run FFXI better than an Xbox does. A better video card wouldn't hurt though if you want to increase the resolution or other video settings.

edit: also, if you have a USB xbox controller, you don't even need an adapter.

You can use an Xbox controller on PC. Also, most semi-modern PC's can run FFXI regardless of the graphics card. I used to run FFXI on a PC from 2005 that had intel graphics.

please, holy hell don't.

what's your budget on a pc and do you want a desktop or laptop?

I'll find you something.

and yes you can make the controls the same via a wired 360 controller, wireless with that (need different than standard drivers for both) or a ps3 controller or a logitech controller (the last being the easiest to use and cheapest but feels different)

motioninjoy is the tool you'd use for ps3, and I know it has 360 functions as well, but it would require reading up on.

also you could use a stock pc yes, but you'd want an aditional video card depending on the resolution you'd want out, but still don't ever buy a dell. (you'd have to ask I think Urial would be the best person to ask here as to which video card would work with xi the best)

also if you're using vista/7 you need to download the pol viewer from the website.

(only trick to all of this is to activate the achievements you'd still need to log in to the xbox)

I stopped buying name brand computers so long ago. I like to actually know everything that's going into my PC, and those companies probably overcharge for junk. I only spent $800 on my current rig, and I've been able to play any game I've wanted. The only game I can't play at max settings is Battlefield 3, but I can get that game on high settings. My computer is complete overkill for FFXI which is the case for a lot of people's computers.

some prebuilt systems are still ok, but typically yes you can build for cheaper from the quality companies.

unfortunately for laptops you can't just build your own, yes they have barebones but it's not worth the effort.

I bought an ASUS all-in-one laptop from BestBuy for 1300. Parts pretty much were the recommends for BF3. Skyrim and BF3 look amazing. Ofcourse 2/3 of the cost was a Christmas gift so that adds to it.

I've rummaged through the graphic settings for FFXI and the sky STILL looks like a blue papertowel. <_<+

disagree with the why and from where but ASUS make quality stuff, I'm super jealous of the ASUS laptop my girlfriend bought, shoots the specs of my laptop out of the water and even cost less... (bought mine a year ago)

the only thing I don't like about it is the keyboard feels weird, and the driver disk came with the software too, I would have preferred they keep the drivers and bloatware separate but meh.

(somehow I conned her into letting me strip 7 home off and putting 7 pro on)

The only major gripe I have with laptops is the lack of being able to upgrade. I personally have a laptop that is only good for browsing the internet, but that's all I really need it for since my desktop is for gaming.

Not very computer savy so I just went with the limited options open to me. Last big purchase before that was a replacement to my one 360 that finaly died after 6+- years and 2 refurbishes. Don't see myself making anymore PC hardware purchases in a few years. I'm quite happy with it. Funny thing though, it doesn't have office so I gotta use an older laptop from college. :/

I think they actually have laptops out that have graphics cards that can be swapped out since they aren't on board, but personally every laptop I've owned wasn't upgradable. I'm curious if you tried to cram that much performance into such a small space what heat issues would be like.

Upgradeable laptops exist, lookup Nvidia MXM-III standards for mobile GPUs. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Upgrade-Replace-a-Notebook-Video-Card.3236.0.html

You are better off building from scratch with a bare-bones kit if you want to "future-proof" though, but I have upgraded all but the GPU in my crappy dell D620 (faster cpu, more ram, SSD... still Intel 950 -.-) and it handles all but gaming at lightning pace. I plan to build a lappy when I has teh moneyz but as I am currently travelling for an unknown duration, buying a new tower to replace old rig in England is impossible.

The only thing that hinders upgrade-ability is laptop manufacturers refusal to standardize form factors. Unfortunately the constantly changing nature of laptops size does not make this easy to overcome and possibly never will be. There is not considered to be a market for it.

they do but they are oem from what I've seen, nobody sells them alone.

Think the lense died or something. Was playing Ace Combat Assault Horizons then the screen randomly changed to a checkered grid on half the screen. The parts that were blacked out looked like a photo negative. I turned it off then powered back on and bam. RRoD. Just purchased a refurbished one from gamestop. No problems since.

Laptop. Like the Asus C90 kit or something.

Talking about for me that is, any home user shouldn't bother as it's gona be more expensive than a desktop equivalent no doubt

Plus, and a 360 I think you still have to have a gold memembership . Which cost 9.99 I think . On PC, you just pay the fee for FF.

FFXI was always playable with a silver membership. My first 360's DVD drive completely died on me. I always got this error when trying to play games.

My Xbox 360 Slim has been good to me so far, but I only have it for console exclusive titles.

rrod isn't a hard fix, getting the xbox open is more of a pain

you ever try to do the music file play when loading the game? (Mariane gave the reason as to why it works in another thread, but forget)

I've locked even the slim up in abyssea.

Used to lock up my old one all the time, currently I use Dynasty Warriors: Gundam as my "test to see if it breaks disc"

if I can play that for half an hour on a system I deem it as suitably fixed.

guy at gamestop told me that too, same guy years later once gave me ***for talking ***on the xbox (when I was in getting a new disc because the system eats them, and tired of it locking up) in his store, few months later he no longer works for gamestop.

I can't say for sure if one of my refurbs lasts for two reasons: 1. the one's I've been fixing aren't mine, 2. I am currently on ICS from a cell connection, so I can only connect one device at a time. (when I can figure out how to get the router to share it to more than 1 device at a time I'll be back online with consoles).
