The problem is, you get people like in the Occupy protest that are just doing it because its something to do, its popular opinion, or are trying to fit in.

I think one of the things about this is, you get people who arent really educating themselves on this, they are just believing what people are telling them. I see a lot of people here overreacting as to what would actually happen if sopa passes. People aren't getting the actual facts and just regurgitating what they hear.
How could you type that load of ***.

"I think one of the things about this is, you get people who arent really educating themselves on this, they are just believing what people are telling them."

If you are educating YOURSELF on the matter, you would know that this ***is awful. This isn't going to hurt piracy nearly (IF AT ALL) as much as it would hurt the whole web.

After trying every hour, I finally got to leave a message with one of my representatives!

One of the others is anti-PIPA and one of the others has his phone disconnected.

Do you think people who peacefully protest outside of businesses, court houses, etc. are childish?
Welcome to the internet. These protests are equivalent to how people would protest irl.

Black outs (with links to what's up) are like the protest signs of the internet.

Except on the internet it's much more informative than a sign that just says "No More War" or something similar.

If anything these protest could be seen as much more informative and more mature than some of the protests that have occurred on the streets.

You get way to hostile over this whole topic.

I am not FOR sopa. I don't agree with it. but I understand what they are trying to do and I don't blindly believe everything everyone tells me on the internet. Some things people say will happen are very extreme and are just trying to scare people into supporting them.

As far as others, they even say that they do not agree with sopa, but they do not agree with how companies or websites are handling their protest of it. But for some reason, people are taking it as "Oh? you dont support how we protest? then you must be against us and for sopa"

it could hurt it but it won't, even if it passes, not by the regular pirates

They may be extreme examples, but I would not trust the media to be fair in their judgments.

People have been stealing since the dawn of time... and you can bet they always will. Even if it is hurt or stopped someone will find a way around it and a new age of theft continues, and who suffers for it the most in the long run? every other well meaning site on the internet.

I can think of some other laws that have done something similar (do next to nothing to stop crime, but makes more paperwork etc for law abiding citizens) as example.

I don't trust the media on their judgements, and I don't trust the American society as a whole on theirs. I learn on my own and make my own judgments and opinions based on that. I don't let others tell me how I should think or feel.

There are some very indisputable facts, the least of which is that it won't actually stop piracy.

They are wrong as well. I can be dissatisfied with both sides without actually being fully on one side or the other.

I can see what Kimble is saying. It doesn't seem like he's advocating for SOPA but just saying that not only on one, but both sides people just agree with the people they like more without really knowing what's going on. Oh SOPA is bad? I shouldn't support it? It will break the internet???? Oh my god we have to stop this now! It happens on both sides not just one or the other.

That's why Jaerik went out of his way to explain the issue in detail. There are many reasons why SOPA and PIPA are bad, he pointed out the bad reasons for this website, and many other websites. People have asked for other explanations. Those have been given too.

Some people just don't care, some people just want to be told what side to stand on. A lot of people have read a lot of articles posing a lot of opinions. I think it's a little unfair for Kimble to just say nobody knows anything about anything, just because some people don't spend any time figuring out what's going on.

Honestly, you're asking the wrong person. The point had nothing to do with SOPA or PIPA themselves but more about the people that support or oppose them.

I agree. It's like you said people are different and the processes they go through to make their decisions differ as well as you pointed out. Whatever side they land on some don't want to be bothered by watching a video or reading about it and would rather just side with whoever appeals more to them.

I could be wrong but I don't think he was blanketing his statement to include all people. If I am mistaken on that then I would have to disagree with him. There are definitely people on both sides who understand and know why they support or oppose and others that really do try to educate themselves about the issue at hand.

Either way I'm helping to bring this off topic and I'm going to let this go so we can stay on topic.

In any event, I don't think we can have a functioning internet without a safe harbor provision. I don't think we can punish websites owners without due process. I think we can find common ground for some things that can be done. But I think we need to leave that power in the courts, and not give it to the entertainment industry.

I may have missed out on this but has anyone started up any constructive discussion with congress? I mean, I see a lot of people flat out condemning SOPA and PIPA but has there been any suggestions made that would contribute to eliminating the problem without stepping on others? I saw a few posts where people said they couldn't think of anything but I was just wondering if there has been any discussion like that.
