Also if you like Obama or not he opposes this

I don't care if you dislike hearing that but he is one of the few chances we have at shooting this down

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111226/23082117192/would-obama-veto-sopa-extremely-doubtful.shtml

So, someone reported he would likely veto it, and you linked an article that shrugs off and disregards the reporter and makes stupid connections and claims?

I don't get it.

One article holds more value than the other etc.

Except that this article takes into account his actions and not just an exclamation of "Hey, I think Obama likes the internet, he would totally veto this."

I'm guessing you bypassed the meat of the article:

Quote:
Throughout his administration, the President has left almost all intellectual property issues up to Vice President Joe Biden, who has been about as big a copyright maximalist as can be. He's the guy who claimed that the heads of the biggest entertainment companies represented "all the stake holders" (public be damned) in a roundtable about intellectual property that he convened two years ago -- from which the ideas behind SOPA and PIPA came. It's safe to assume that he's totally on board with the bills, and since Obama defers to him on these issues, you can expect this issue is pretty much decided.

Especially Obama's own actions regarding the recent patent reform bill.

Quote:
If you want a blueprint for how this works, just look at how he signed the patent reform bill a few months ago, despite widespread complaints among the tech industry about how the patent system was totally broken and the bill didn't help at all. He still signed it and declared (incorrectly) that it would stimulate new jobs. He'd do the exact same thing here. Sign it, point to the AFL-CIO and US Chamber of Commerce support and talk about how this was a "jobs bill" that would "help the economy" by "protecting American jobs."

Or how about his vocal opposition to NDAA, stating he would veto that, which he then signed?

I hope people realize that the NDAA changed a lot between when he said that and when he signed it and it doesn't authorize what people are bitching about it authorizing...

K, you aren't worth anyone's time.

You know how much stuff a president does on a daily basis? And how much he's been involved with over the past 4 years?

Good job on citing 2 examples in simplistic point of view without taking everything involved in consideration.

But no, you'll keep on saying and doing what you are regardless because it fits your own view and ideal, despite everything being considered.

-------

Now, how about you guys go and email your congressmen and spread the word about opposing SOPA instead of bitching about irrelevant stuff in a thread about a different subject.

Actually, that's the point I'm trying to make. Placating people by saying that Obama will veto something(that he likely won't) is NOT going to give them any motivation to actually do things about it. If you sit there and tell everyone that Obama's just going to veto it anyway, why bother contacting your government in opposition to the bill?

You should go under the reasonable assumption, given the track record, that he would sign this bill if it passes - and therefore we need to fight hard against it as constituents.

Fair points. The president, obviously, can't veto it indefinitely, which is where my view came in on convincing congress to not pass this.

Glad we agree on the same course of action.

U.S. citizens once rioted over a small tax on alcohol.

I'm convinced at this point, I feel like they could raise taxes to 90% and take away free speech and nothing would happen.

Have been signing as many petitions to stop these bills that I've seen and have sent several e-mails to governers and Congress concerning the matters; along with trying to spread the word among who I actually socialize with, but I fear a majority of the American public is either too lazy to do anything about, doesn't know about the existence of these bills, and those who do voice their opinions just aren't enough to catch attention.

:x this is... scary, to say the least.

If this actually passes (I really do hope it doesn't... if it does a shitstorm's going to follow, or at least I would hope) I'd seriously consider going back to Canada. I don't know if Canada wouldn't do the same thing and follow the US, as some articles have pointed out.. the US does tend to set the trend for politics.

Now, if some of the videos/articles that were posted earlier in this thread are correct (I assume they are...) then there's no way in hell this would even be considered right now. Our country would collapse as we know it. This would fall under the category of limiting free speech... If people were making money off of the industries' content directly, that'd be copyright infringment etc, and yes, that would be perfectly fair to have things like that be taken down. Someone posting a song in the background of a home video they posted on youtube is in no way them trying to make money off of a song.

As far as the NDAA goes, I thought it didn't really give the government many more rights that they didn't already have, I would assume they can't just pick anyone up for just saying they're a threat to the nation. My guess would be there is some sort of profile someone would have to fit, and that at least somewhat be looked at by the judicial branch. If not, it's *very* unconstitutional, the reason the three branches have checks and balances is to keep the other parts in check...

anyway... scary *** :/ really really don't hope this passes.

I've sent multiple e-mails and posted this all over facebook hoping some of my friends are smart enough to see what the implications this bill has.

Perhaps you should take a deeper look into Ron Paul's positions, maybe even read one of his books. Some things may sound kooky or crazy in shorthand, if you understand the background of his positions, you may find you agree with a few more of them.

I hate putting my vote on something so narrow and focused, but this really will make or break which candidate I vote for in 2012 depending on their stance with the bill and subsequent ones under it's belt.
I don't care if it requires breaking my typical line of partisanship; this is too serious of an issue for such things to even remotely matter.

Actually, in this case, Reddit's users are doing a fair bit. Last I checked, they were randomly assigning 2 congressmen (one D, one R) that they were going to ruin the career for being in support of SOPA.

Reddit is good at two things:
-Raising money
-Raising a shitstorm

That's how within 48 hours of starting their campaign, GoDaddy had to cave.

But we all need to be involved. Every last one of us.
