Is there any way around this... at all? i've installed FFXI on a multitude of different PCs and it's always the same. any kind of screen flicker causes FFXI to crash in an instant...

Because of this you can't use UAC properly, can't goto log in screen after screen saver has been interrupted, can't play any other games while FFXI is running (well most you cant as long as it doesnt make the screen flicker.) ect ect. cant use windows media center in full screen. i got a super PC and I hate being restricted to just this 1 game. can easily let FFXI run in the back ground no problem without it affecting anything else I do. 240kb ram? lol... uses up like none of my graphics card ram. its hilarious, but the game crashes in a heart beat if you try to do much of anything else! its annoying :3

I do lol most other games crash FFXI when starting up. sometimes in the middle of game play. was trying to play Need for Speed: The Run and in window mode too. (i play all games in window mode because of ffxi) it starts up and screen flickers like 5 times its like wtf! GTA4 flickers a couple times before starting up, but doesn't crash FFXI if you are using multiple monitors lol I don't get it. just been playing this game 6 years never really asked if anyone had any idea around this bs

I'm not an idiot <.< i always play my games in window mode. anytime you try to change res in any way (when games go into window mode it affects PC res). it crashes ffxi too. that goes along with the screen flickering.

that would be awesome... smart. just hope the screen flickering doesnt affect FFXI.

VirtualBox 3.0.0 sun edition seems to support directx

This is something that goes back to when FFXI thought it was unfair for someone to alt tab out of FFXI to look stuff up. Changing the focus of FFXI would cause it to shut down.

To look stuff up you would have to have a 2nd PC, or you would commonly see someone type "hold on, logging to check online".

This was before they allowed FFXI to be played in widowed mode (assuming you didn't use 3rd party tools).

They sorta fixed the major issues when they allowed windowed mode, but I'm assuming a screen resolution change will cause you to get kicked out of FFXI.

I would suggest turning off your screen saver, or change the conditions under which it operates.

Screen savers used to be important because CRT monitors could get images burned into them if left with a static screen, so the screen saver would turn on to "save" the screen. We do not have this problem with the technology of today, since all newer displays are LCD (which I'm assuming you have). If you have focus in FFXI, your computer shouldn't go to screensaver anyway...

Moreover, under power management (at least in windows 7) you can tell the display to turn off (which shouldn't affect your game) and while you're at it, you can go ahead and tell it to never put your computer to sleep.

When your computer sleeps, the HDD stops spinning, I think.. and when that happens you're not communicating to POL anymore.

With Windows Media Center... I think if you run ffxi in windowed mode you shouldn't get kicked out of FFXI for having that in full screen, unless it changes your resolution.

Built in windowed mode is accessed from the config tool (when you're not in POL or logged in) by checking the "windowed mode" box.

doing some program moving around atm. clearing up my second hard drive so it has a primery use for the VirtualBox. gonna do some tweaks then.

@Goduro
I know all that stuff, like I said I been messing around with it for 6 years. Same deal, can go full screen in media player but not media center. and i turned off screen saver and all that stuff alooooong time ago. UAC is off ect ect i was just giving examples of stuff that can cause ffxi to crash. the main problem is just not being able to play some games without ffxi crashing. that is what i cant change. gonna give this VB a go

it saves to a file, you can make it to expand as needed.

I currently have xp installed, the guest additions (you have to run the guest in safemode) and mount the disc from the host's install folder and install the additions in the guest os

and even added the extensions (usb 2 support etc)

still no full dx support, but I haven't played with it in a few weeks, been busy.

try to see if opengl will work first, if it does look into working directx in the opengl container, I've read that it works

that was my next route after trying to reinstall directx I just hadn't gotten around to it yet.

sorry I don't have too stable internet when I'm not at school or staying with my girlfriend so I haven't been on.

1. You probably want at least half a gig of memory
2. you want to enable 3d support in the tab, and install the guest additions

3. which os did you run as guest?

4. ffxi needs directx
