But think about that. No more running around with bags and storage full of equipment that is being swapped and switched constantly for optimization for single effects of for seconds at a time. Gear would be about combining and wearing gear that works best overall for monster or event. Mages would be unable to change equipment while casting/JA/WS of course.

Grinding is akin to toiling in the hot sun all day, bent-over doing back-breaking work like pulling weeds or picking strawberries on a huge farm .... all for a marginal paycheck.
Yeah, you got rewarded ... so I guess it's an accomplishment, but at what cost?
I think most FFXI players would agree that a little bit of grinding here and there is part of the game's experience, and in small doses, it could be considered fun or entertaining ... but that's it.
Of course, the only FFXI activity that's more obnoxious and uninteresting than grinding ... is standing around in Dragon's Aery for 3 hours. Good riddance to that.

I'd suggest removing the small number of macro lines we get and increasing it to like 10 or something. Same with the AH, remove the 7 item limit and expand it, even if it was a quest or something.
I can't think of much other actual content I'd get rid of, most of the time if I don't do a certain activity I just ignore anything to do with it. I do think sometimes are a bit past it like Garrison and Ballista etc. Those could probably go and no one would notice.
