i'd love to hear any suggestions from anyone as far as translating jp>eng in a simple manner goes as most of the dl sites for some programs are disabled.

http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/93497-Viewing-jp-under-notepad-wordpad

--------------------------------------------

My server sucks now and is filled with nothing but JP and i'm trying to view JP under notepad using the logger plugin for windower.

Only problem is whenever I open the notepad for logger it comes out like this from jp text:

(‰Î)20Žž`— ƒWƒ…ƒm‚É‚¢‚«

but when I paste jp text from a site into notepad it recognizes it fine and doesn't crash or anything 昨日なんと珍.

tbh what do I do? I'm only trying to translate jp text, however I can paste text into ffxi but I can never understand what the jp guy is actually saying to me because I have no way of copying its jp text.

------------------------------------

well I followed the directions and saved it as UTF-8 but now it's converting the jp text from ffxi into a different kind of gibberish from what I originally had.

i tried pasting this in my ffxi and copied out into the notepad using logger:

昨日なんと珍

converts to:

Ȃƒa@ɍs

so this problem still remains.

edit: I saved the file logger was writing its info to UTF-8, opened it later and it still opens as UTF-8 and more text is still being written in as I open it each time, so that work, but the JP text still isn't being recognized. I'm still able to actually paste jp text into the file myself, but it won't record the text from ffxi correctly. I'm doing this on notepad btw.

I'm not sure about notepad, but you have to make sure you download the JP language pack for windows.

I suggest moving to a server more English/Notepad Translation friendly.
BUT THAT'S JUST ME.

I don't know how that works for newer OSes but on Windows XP if you change the non-unicode setting for the OS to Japanese (under Region and language settings at the "advanced tab") automagically the clipboard starts working for japanese text, you suddenly get able to use the Japanese PlayOnline viewer, Altana viewer, JPN Model Viewer and a ton of Japanese windows games start to work.

Why ? Because under that setting the OS will accept Japanese names on filenames, the clipboard and registry keys.

Infuriating design at it's best.

Not sure if this is helpful or not - I feel like I am a couple levels below your level in things like this. But what the heck. When I am playing with JP players, I just run Kparser, and it picks it up fine. I can copy and translate from there, and of course still paste into ffxi. It's a little hokey, and there is a couple second delay, but it works.

Again... I really feel like you're looking for something more sophisticated, but maybe this is useful.

Nevermind... got further in the BG thread. I am useless here :D

I've got very little experience in doing this so sorry if this has been tried or doesn't work but have you tried using notepad++'s convert to utf-8 option? I don't have an example of the txt file it's outputting for you or I'd have tried it first before suggesting. There are a bunch of language support options in notepad++.

JP language symbols are simply a display of an unusual string of normal characters that when set up right, the encoder reads and displays as the proper text. If the logger file is keeping the code string properly then it's possible to convert it back but it highly depends on how it was done. If it isn't designed for JP text support then it might be encoding it wrong and then you might have to play around with some weird things to convert it back properly. If it doesn't then you really have no way to utilize this particular plugin to do it.

If nothing else, I've bumped your thread! Good luck with it though.

Meldity just made me try this, and I couldn't get it to work. I loaded my chatlog into notepad++ and tried to convert to UTF-8 from ANSI and it didn't do anything. I mentioned loading language packs on to his computer earlier, just like you do to get IME to work properly, if that helps at all, since it's related.

Is it just for the stuff you pull from the log or is it for any JP text?

Download this and see if you can display it in notepad.

edit: going to class, i'll be back later to help if you still need it. If this displays in JP still, I have a hunch that it's an incompatability with logger/ffxi/system.

whoop i don't see any jp text in it. but i can still paste some into it which i don't understand really.

ok so all that apparently works for me. but the whole process is rather tedious
1.) take text from loggers notepad
2.) paste in ++
3.) copy from there
4.) goto http://www.excite.co.jp/world/

atm it takes a lot of work lol :[

i know there's gotta be something better than this

I'm not familiar with logger, but does it use it's own standalone notepad or is it simply a txt file that you open and it defaults to notepad?

Perhaps I can play around with it a bit and find a better way. This would drive me nuts to use for quick communication or tells and such.

FFXI does not use UTF-8 / unicode, but an older Japanese encoding method called Shift-JIS.

If you're on an English operating system, your OS will assume that any program NOT using unicode is written in English ASCII and attempt to convert cut/pastes appropriately. This will mangle anything sent to/from a Shift-JIS program or website (like FFXI).

In order to fix it, you need to set your OS to assume ALL non-unicode programs are Japanese Shift-JIS. This can be done in the Region and Locales / Internationalization setting of Windows (depending on version), or through configuration utilities (some suggested above) that change that setting for just the program in question.

However, realize that a lot of programs out there read your "default non-unicode language" as a shortcut to determining where you actually live and which OS language version you have. So if you set it, be prepared for a LOT of programs to suddenly start launching in Japanese by default.

Also realize that even if the conversion is done appropriately, English-only fonts (like the defaults used in English Windows) simply do not have all the symbols and characters necessary to display Japanese. (You cannot display Japanese in Times New Roman. The very notion is nonsensical.)

You need to display the text in a Japanese-capable font, like MS Gothic or MS Mincho, to get it to display at all. You get these fonts through installing Japanese as a display language, again through Regional and Locales / Internationalization.

Hmm, thanks for the info. Perhaps I can get something to work a little better, cut out a step or two or maybe someone who can actually program for a damn can take a look. It'd be really handy to be able to get a general idea of what the jp are saying without depending on the increasingly useless auto translate.
