just used google translate on the other languages so while not the best translation it does clarify that stage 2 augments tier 2 merit abilities . (the links are to the pages in original languages translate them as you want)

french to english: Step Two: improved characteristics obtained with merit points.
Japanese to english: Point increase in the performance benefits associated with second-stage

I can't speak for French or German, but Google translated the Japanese completely wrong there (the words are out of order and it changes the meaning).

Good look on the clarification weasel, but even with what you've said the end conclusion seems to be unchanged. Stage-two augmented relic is going to enhance/ augment merited abilities. Just remains to be seen if SE will get it right this time around and make relic something more than just a collection macro swap/towngear/inventory -1 pieces...

What are you talking about? None of these translations suggest that the relic upgrades will augment tier 2 merit abilities... The second stage of the upgrade will focus on merit abilities (any), not just the second tier of merits. If they release these upgrades along with the level increase, I think it's safe to assume that the upgrades may augment merit abilities that we might not even have yet.

It could be traits for all we know. Some jobs have mainly spells, not abilities, for T2 merits. My point was that it's probably not going to be attained by spending merits.

I wouldn't trust bad Google translations, especially when it's gone from Japanese to French to English. You can read it both ways.

I anticipate that it's gonna do that anyway. I have no idea what I'll do tbh, if all 5 pieces end up being useful I'll be at 82/80 with another 60 in sack and miscellaneous weapons in satchel. :\ No job out there more gear intensive than BLU. :C

The problem with interpreting the translations of those two lines (as with any translation) is a lack of context. If you look at the line directly above the description of the two stages it becomes more clear:

The key ambiguous word here is 方向性 which means "course of action" It does also interpret as "direction" or "trend", but only insofar as those words share a connotation with "course of action". I feel in this particular sentence that the "course of action" meaning (as in "way" or "method"), is more appropriate contextually. Resulting in the meaning:
There are two upgrade stages available, each upgrade will occur through the "course of action" below.

So in other words. Stage one: player uses items to upgrade armor. Stage 2: player uses merit points to upgrade armor.

Currently the below is the direction the development team is heading in for relic equipment upgrades: Stage 1: Enhancement of base stats creating a more powerful version of the original relic piece Stage 2: Enhancements with unique properties that are different from that of other existing equipment (Example: enhancing merit point-related stats, etc.)

i hope that doesnt mean that tier 3 merits are for relic armor. like u have to put them onto a relic piece in order to use it... thats not what it is right? D:

For those who don't know, it's not yet specified on test server what kind of items are required, however it's 50 for non upgraded relics and 20 for +1.

Hmmm, that quite a difference. 60% reduction :/
