Looking at getting a turbo stick so I can have FFXI in my hotel room while i am out of town working. I am not sure how myuch data XI uses in a month or if using a data stick is even feasible. Thanks in advance for all your feedback

Yes but hotels in the middle of nowhere have free wifi that lets auction house load each page 5 minutes at a time if it works at all lol.

i think you should find a different job or demand better lodging, if you're traveling 20 nights a month in cheap roach hotels :s

If all you did was use it for FFXI(and no websites), I'd think you'd be hard pressed to break 3gb in a month's time. What kind of plans do they offer?

They give us a live out allowance. 130-250 a night depending on region. This is tax free cash in our pockets. the cheaper the hotel the more of it we pocket... Also when in a town caled waskataneau and the like there isn't much that ranks above cheap dive on the luxury scale!

lol. well i heard about ffxi and data plans a long time ago somewhere on here, and remember that it doesn't take a lot of data, even on 24/7, but that was with larger plans and not those little stick thingys.

Back when I was in school I was bottlenecked to 5 gb/day. I was pretty much logged in 24 hours/day with two accounts, doing stuff 24 hours a day even while sleeping, and the bandwidth the game used didn't come into play one bit.

I'd recommend you test this yourself, find a bandwidth monitor online (I used bandwidth meter pro) and see how much you use in a few five hour gaming periods then extrapolate. It is my opinion if you're ONLY using it for ffxi Mahayaya's upper limit of 3 gb is about right.

FFXI runs fairly well on dial up other than the latency issues you get so I'd say if you have your standard 5gb limit for a wireless card(the one's I've used anyway) a month, you should have little issues. Though you might want to keep an eye on your usage per day just to be sure you won't run out, particularly if you browse the lol pic thread of have a habit of F5'ing a lot. I will say your usage is going to vary a ton based on what you're doing and where.

Thanks for all the help guys! One more question tho..

Would a turbo stick be noticeably better then tethering to my galaxy s?

I've used tethering quite a bit with FFXI, and aside from a version issue with PdaNet 2.0 (have to use 1.8 for FFXI), it worked great. As long as my signal was good, I didn't notice a difference when compared to a land line.

Your phone probably has a data cap too, tethering is going to eat up that bandwidth. You could try it though if you don't do much else on it.

One thing to note is that there's a difference in purchasing tethering through your provider, and using a program like PdaNet. PdaNet uses your internet connection, and it won't show up as a tethering charge. I would use in excess of 1GB a day, and my unlimited data plan covered it. If I had purchased tethering through them, they would've limited it.

This is at your own risk, of course. They may shut you down rather quickly if you're using an app.

You're going to pay for it if it is truly unlimited but many have throttling after 5gb even if you do have 'unlimited'. I know this is the case with some of the new 4g phones around here. They knock you down to 3g or less after your limit is reached.

Kinda shady...

I dual box and use 4gb a month on a usb stick wifi modem, and generally leave my chars on day and night. Mind you i'm careful not to download etc but for wiki and ffxi my 4gb has an expiry of 30 days and quite easily sees me through month by month

I've never been throttled. I should look through my bill history and see what my highest GB used per month is.

It's a pretty recent thing so I hear, it might not be on your contract but they will do anything they can to make more money and let you use less bandwidth...

Sounds like you're in the same boat I'm in. Working in the oil patch in the north I'm often in hotels 20 days a month too.
I've personally used my iPhone tethered for ffxi(far better than the shitass wifi) with only a 3 gig/month plan and have yet to go over in the last year. If that helps at all

Thats exactly it Mog. Internet when in remote Alberta just plain sucks... Was just curious about speed of connection and what not as with bell i can get 5gb on either my phone or turbostick. Unfortunatley i don't think they offer a unlimited plan even for my android...

I have what is called a Turbo Hub as I live in a rural area. Same deal as a turbo stick, just an upgrade if you will. I am limited to 10GB of data transfer per month and I have yet to go over my limits and I play a lot of NHL12 on PSN as well as FFXI and I download the odd CD when I can't wait to grab it at a friends or something. I also downloaded a bunch of stuff (well over a gigs worth) to jailbreak my iphone this month and I am still in good shape bandwidth wise.

My advice to you is this: You are able to buy these sticks and try them for 14 days, at least around here. I suggest buying one, and monitoring your usage closely. If you find it's going up too fast for your liking, then return it but you really should be fine if you avoid using it for too much other stuff. Things like Google image search and youtube will eat up your bandwidth so fast it will make your head spin.

Most every online game will run adequatly on ISDN with a decently low latency. The actual quantity of data transfered is comparatively little, aside from your co-ordinates in game, it only needs to know a given command or commands entered (which will likely have some shorthand) or the text you type.

ISDN has max theoretical throughput of 128kbps (which you will rarely hit) making 11 in worst case scenario roughly about as bandwidth heavy as streaming internet radio (60Mb/hourish). Realistically 11 uses considerably less bandwidth than this most of the time, well within the boundaries of 56kbps.
Having just opened a simple bandwidth monitor I can confirm it has spent the majority of it's time beneath 1kb/s up/down and occasionally spiking upto 8kb/s (at AH). Going for a run about (thus having to retrieve more data for different parts of upper jueno this increases to aprox 3kb/s, however this data could be influenced by my having firefox open slightly.

Going by 11s ingame Sent and Received stats (top right), I don't think I have ever seen it maintain more than a 3000b/s for any extended period of time. Going for a quick jog around ru'lude shows a steady ~1500b/s received rate untill dropping back to around 500b/s stationary.

Therefore I would guestimate a compared worst case scenario average bandwidth consumption of something around 2.5kb/s. Roughly 8.8mb an hour. ~210mb in a full day, 6.5gb in a 31 day month (assuming 24/7 gameplay), and I personally think that is a very high worst case average. Realistically, I wager 1.5kb/s as an average more believable.

In other words, you will more than likely use more bandwidth browsing FFXIAH and the Wiki than you do playing (assuming you use these sites as much as I do when playing lol). Kinda makes you wonder how they can charge so much/month when so many websites with higher bandwidth consumption manage to provide a service for free :P.

Edit:Going further into this for lulz (stop here if bored lol), I guestimate based on my worst case average, assuming 2500 players per server (again quite rare), that each server uses something around 62mb/s total bandwidth (mostly (for them) upload). Almost exactly 1Gb/s for all 17 servers (worst case don't forget). Quick butchers online indicates an unmetered 1Gbps dedicated server is roughly £1k a month but this would likely include maintenance costs etc. realistic actual throughput likely to be in the 120mb/s(got this wrong lol) range. 9 physical servers = £9k/month (very rough guess lol)

Of course realistically the price is probably reduced as they likely host themselves, each physical server is probably running multiple game servers and 1Gbps should realistically be enough for 3-4 game servers at a time. and if we assume there are 2500 active accounts per server (massively low estimate), across 17 servers @£10/hr... half mil a month? but god knows how many staff that is paying for or the myriad of other costs I happily skipped over. Regardless, even considering worst case the margin is huge.

Bored now.

If you won't do anything other than browse websites (no streaming videos/music) and play FFXI, you won't go over 50~60mb per day. Provided you play 5-6 hours of FFXI a day.

1gb data plan is pushing it, but 2gb per month is too much. You will probably need 1.5gb at most if you play FFXI everyday for 5-6 hours.

get an unlimited data plan and tether

or the mifi from virgin mobile used to offer unlimited (not sure now)

last I checked Sprint may offer some service.

I get about 3mbps download speed when tethering.

(now if I can only freaking get ICS to work properly I can be online at home...)
