I seem to recall that there was some relation to these mobs and the Caturae in the same zone. At some point SE updated the Caturae's spawn conditions and I don't recall seeing them since.

everytime i saw tejas around, i'd shout, "the stars at night! are big in bright! deep in the heart of tejas!"

the avatars stopped showing up shortly after around the time hero abyssea came out. i always assumed it was quest related, i.e. miasma quest.
