I want to do some video editing for a class, but I don't want to buy anything since I haven't needed to edit video forever and probably won't forevermore.

Things I need to be able to do:

1.) Cut clips out of much larger videos
2.) Have a separate audio track
3.) Be able to add text captions
4.) Be able to play two clips side by side as like a split screen

Anyone know of a free program that I can do this stuff in? Thanks!

I believe Windows Movie Maker or iMovie can do all of that. They come free on Windows and Mac.

Windows Movie Maker doesn't appear to come standard in my copy of 7 ultimate :/

Haven't used it in many many many years, but back in the day, this had everything I ever needed for quick editing.

Sort of an advanced editing tool, so beware.

I may just be stupid and ignant, but I've never been able to actually edit video clips in Windows Movie Maker, just combine them together to make a larger video.

It's standard for all Windows platforms, but it's a separate download with the Windows Live package. It can aplice together video clips, run a separate audio channel, add annotation/captions etc. etc.

You can easily download Windows Movie Maker for win7, try type it on google, but i dont think/remember about "4.) Be able to play two clips side by side as like a split screen"
