Not at all, Im just explaining that abyssea 'completely' changed the game. Yes, the old stuff is still there (they even changed some of that too) but its dead. That may not be as drastic as making it into a shooter but with how different it is they might as well have. Maybe you should think a little more before you post?
Last I checked:
WARs/MNKs/DRGs/DRKs/etc still do damage
WHMs still heal
BRDs/RDMs/CORs still buff
PUPs still go back to town to change job
The game's not that different. We operate under some different parameters in Abyssea (like having twice as much hp!) but it's kind of a stretch to say the game is totally different. The core mechanics still operate like they always have. I mean, do you remember how people wigged out at the 2h buff?
The more things change, the more they stay the same blah blah blah

Why are you even talking about changes in genre when the only change applies strictly to centralized content that stands on it's own?
The only reason older stuff is "dead" is because less people do it. But thanks to other content adjustments, some of it is still relevant and is easily completed alone or with small groups thanks to the level increase.

No, they don't. You can't cite job 'function' as that is conceptual but the core mechanics of those jobs are all changed. We all know at this point there are so few 'viabale' options for choices. If you aren't maining or having level'd one of the core accepted jobs you arent going to be doing much. Abyssea is the only thing really worth doing. Missions and story stuff, something that used to be an important feature of the game is dead. Pretty much everything I used to do is either broken or worthless. FFXI today is like ffxi of yesterday in little more than graphical look and similar combat mechanics.

like the other guy you didnt see where I was connecting it. Im not 'suggesting' that abyssea changes the genre, just that it may as well have been a different game entirely with what it did to ffxi.

I 'assume' that you're referring to me as the community here is surprisingly anti ffxi. I guess supporting something you loved counts as trolling these days. Then again, maybe you're one of those band wagon 'anything that sparks an argument = trolling' types.

There are an awful lot of people dissatisfied with what ffxi is, and a lot of it is directed at the introduction of Abyssea. I bet this isn't the case for all of these people, but, maybe it has a little bit to do with the people, as well. I don't want to say they "grew out of it," because I don't see anything wrong with playing ffxi at any age, but it might just be "their time." Think about all the great games from when we were younger. Yeah, some of them are still a lot of fun, but mostly, it's just nostalgia. And for the majority of games, you beat it, then move on.
But with MMOs, there is no beating it (obviously) and people are still here 9, 10 years later. I can totally see how that could be frustrating. But maybe all these people are feeling are the same feelings I feel when I go back and try to play Castlevania or something - "man, this used to be so cool, and now it's kinda dumb."
I am just having a hard time believing that all these people were having a ton of fun, and now all that's gone. I kinda bet they were a little burned out before.

Mishaa, I get the feeling (based off something you said in one of your mads)
that you were not nearly as accomplished as most of the populous when Abyssea hit,
meaning you didn't do sky/sea/limbus/salvage/ein and so forth for years.
If I'm being presumptuous, so be it but either way that seams to be the case.
You missed the golden years?
Its hard to call old content dead if you still want gears, you can up the challenge at will.
Going solo or duo in sky or a trio in salvage, whatever it may be.
If your point is that you liked old XI better, got it.
Really no need to argue with everyone about that.

I don't completely see what you're saying. It sounds like you think the majority is against abyssea (and the updates that accompany it) but its more like the majority is for it. In all honesty I feel that ffxi before was more than just the sum of its parts. Abyssea to me is like a nice mini game but little more than that. Im very confident that I would have more fun playing the old ffxi, there would be a good bit of bad to go along with that. Having come and go a lot I am fully aware of how nostalgia can alter perspective. However that also lets me know that while it may not be all I dream it was, I know that every time I went back I still enjoyed it.
Again, I was never here intending to make this a debate over old vs new. I just wanted to support the old in the face of all the negativity twords it that i've seen here. Like what you like, thats your thing but for me, ffxi was unique, its not what it was anymore, and there will not likely ever be anything like it again.
Edit for that last guy above me: pretty much what I just said, I want to support it having seen all the hate for it here. Im not trying to argue which is better or w/e, I just think someone should stand up for it... It was a damn good game, half at least of the people complaining about it now played it for how long? Im sure more of us loved it at some point. So if no one will stand up for it I will.

^ I can only guess the lower the number, the sooner you started playing.
So I have been reading what people want SE to do with jobs, and all I can say is wow. Do none of these new people know the basic mechanics of this game? I miss the old days where there was some structure to this game. When things were hard and you could not lvl every job, plus get the best gear for it in a matter of months. Seems the reason to solo now is not because you have the ability to, but to avoid being wiped because of people who have no idea what they are doing. Any one else feel the same way? Then again most who do probably quit lol.
