Presumably the group is trying to make a point about lackluster security, and clearly believes that it is both above the law and able to do anything it wants. The group has even been brazen enough to set up a phone number for the community to request new "targets."
LulzSec has also claimed responsibility for attacks on Sony Pictures, PBS.org, Fox.com and Bethesda in recent weeks.
If you are a user of one of the affected services, be sure to change your login details once the group finishes having its "fun." According to Notch on Twitter, Minecraft is now back up. The Escapist and EVE Online still appear to be down at the time of writing.
UPDATE: The group now claims to have taken down the League of Legends login servers as well as eight other sites requested by users phoning in.

Are these actual hacks or distributed denial of service attacks?
A DDoS isn't a hack, it's just a button push. And it doesn't compromise "security" in any way.

I don't know how they want to show the lack of security when they perform DDoS attacks. Still, the servers should be setup in a way to recognize this spam and stop trying to relay it. Would keep them from crashing at least.

I agree, I would want everything functional as well. No online means less fun in the evenings for me. I fear this is the only way to make the clowns stop moving their mouths, however.
