Using PS3 gamepad to play FFXI on Windows 7 HELP
I am having problems figuring out how to use a ps3 controller to play FFXI on Windows 7. If anyone has been able to do this please tell me how, and if it's not possible please say so. Thank you.

This is for Vista, but most other Vista tutorials work. Sorry if it doesn't. EDIT: This is for Windows 7 http://www.hardcoreware.net/how-to-playstation-3-controller-64-bit-windows-7-vista/ I've tried so many times with free patches and whatnot.
i did find a x32 bit one, but my win 7 is x64 =( I'm currently using: ![]() http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Afterglow+AP.1+Controller+for+PS3&x=0&y=0 Afterglow controller. It's plug-and-play so you don't need to worry bout it =) Take care in doing this, I've did it on windows vista and the drivers started to f*** my PC up (as in: blue screens of death popped when I removed the controller out of my PC usb).

You'll need a Bluetooth adapter to use your PS3 controller wireless, but I'm guessing it's all detailled in Cathaldus link. You can roam in MotioninJoy forums too if you have trouble settings your pad. I've tried several programs/drivers and it's the easiest to use and setup. Edit: I'm on 7 64bits I used to use a sixaxis to play on the PC both wired and wirelessly (requires a USB bluetooth adapter) with non official drivers. They worked well but the thing that sucks with these drivers is that they are not signed and therefor only work in 32-bit versions of Windows. You can get them to work in 64-bit Windows but it requires you to disable driver signing verification every time you boot your PC which is annoying.

It pretty much Just Works on Win7 64 bit.

I guess I will have to download the latest version and try it out again. I think i'll buy a logitech gamepad. I had the same problem as tripster had with the download deleting other drivers on my PC. I had to do a system restore to get everything back. But thank you guys for your help.
It's prolly not what you want to hear but I can tell you I ran into tons of problems when coming back to FFXI on PC. I used to use a PS3 controller on Windows XP and it worked great, but on my new computers I ran into issues.
I had one version of Windows 7 on my laptop that would run with the PS3 controller and then on my PC with Windows 7 using the exact same drivers doing the exact same install it would just not work 100%. I even tried all these different options for installing drivers from anything I could find online and after something like 10 different attempts even when they loaded it ran really glitchy and I can't remember what it wouldn't recognize but it could either only see buttons and not see the dual analaogs or something like that. Even on my laptop the drivers would just lock up my computer sometimes if you accidently unplugged it would BSOD and such. My solution ended up saving me a ton of headaches and was very low cost. Went out and just bought a Logitech gamepad for $24. From someone that used to use nothing but PS3 controller on XP and has had both success and failure with the PS3 controller on Win7 I recommend getting the Logitech.
for the people absolutely set on using ps3 controller (some have better success than others depending on the PC)
This is what I used last year to get it working with XIV beta The files required: (old links if any of them are dead sorry it's all I got for now) Motioninjoy x64 Driver: http://www.motioninjoy.com/download Motioninjoy Vibration Driver: http://www.motioninjoy.com/uploadfiles/MotioninJoy_vibration_0100.rar NGO Unsigned Driver Override Program: http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=dseo I've always used an Xbox 360 controller to play. Never had any problems with it.

I use this item to play with my ps2 controller on my computer. It was $4 when I got it a year ago and pretty awesome for those that would like to use the ps2 controller without the bootleg feeling. If you care I can take a photograph of all of my logitech controllers for you later. lol i've been using my logitech gamepad for about a year now and it has not broken.
Maybe I'm rougher with my controllers and I don't know it. But I will tell you my PS3 controllers and even PS2 controllers have stood the test of time much better than any logitech controller I've ever owned.

I think Ive gone through 3 of them, and 2 wireless. If your gonna get a Logitech brand, the wireless controller is far more reliable IMO but they cost just as much a wireless 360 controller. I as well got tired of my Logitech controllers breaking, that's why I just recently bought a 360 controller off amazon for my PC. i agree they do seem cheap though i just haven't had any bad luck with mine maybe. but i expected it to be cheapish for $25 too
motioninjoy works great, but for some reason the other day I couldn't get it to work properly on my girlfriend's laptop, then I ended up screwing mine up when I copied the settings.
Either I could get the r2/l2 to work as buttons, and not have analog sticks (and move with the dpad, and no vibration) or not have the l2/r2. After much fiddling I got mine back to work (don't have her laptop right now) not 100% sure but I think it had something to do with the driver wasn't loaded into ram properly when I was fiddling with the settings, as once I killed the process and reloaded it, then reisntalled driver, then plugged it back in it worked. On the motioninjoy main menu when the dpad was moving me it wasn't showing the controller as plugged in. (oh and the blue tooth is easy to set up once you get to that point). only odd thing about it is every time you restart you have to run it and hit enable for it to work properly, and if you're multiscreening you have to select your character in game with the mouse so it doesn't flip out. As for the signing, you don't have to worry about that anymore, motioninjoy bought a microsoft signing for (I think they said $600) so you don't have to run it unsigned. as for the logitechs, I have like 5, only 2 work.
Pretty sure it was a faulty usb port on my old desktop's case that caused it though. I suggest you use Motioninjoy so far the best to use for PS3 controllers. I have used logitech controllers before and they are not good for the hardcore gamer. I been thru 3 logitech controllers because of the Dpad alone.. damn thing always needed a cleaning and opening and closing the thing was quite annoying.
As much as I liked the 360 controler with the usb dongle I kinda could not use all the buttons while mapping on XI or other games and the battery Issue. last thing I needed was fighting an NM or boss in abyssea and the battery dies mid fight that's so annoying. I stuck with an Item I bought in Newegg It's a PS1-2 to usb item that can fit 2 controllers cost me only $3 so I bought 2 just in case one breaks down. I have been with the item for a year w/o so much as a breakdown or hiccup. I love this USB item I can play XI and and any emulator at the same time and not worry about using 1 controller to play all.... GL in fixing you controller to play XI I know how frustrating it is to configure controllers on PC Bismarck.Raymon said: I suggest you use Motioninjoy so far the best to use for PS3 controllers. I think I will finally get to play Breath of fire 1 and 2 after getting the cartridges from a flea market for $4. Just bought a 2 controller usb adaptor for $15~ish
gonna be sweet. I've been having the urge to replay SMRPG and Mario Paint lately... Hell yes SMRPG.
