FPSs "online" can be hardcore since a newcomer would clearly get destroyed, especially in PC gaming. Competitiveness adds a new layer to making a game hardcore. Take Smash Bros for instance. That game started off mad casual. Something fun to pick up and put down, easy controls, everyone's having fun. People MADE it hardcore by taking to the next level.

That's true. I too feel the term should be used for the person, not the game/system itself, but it's hard to invest a lot of time in a game that's mad short, thus why people would call something like Mario casual since it can be beaten within 2 days, whereas a game like Call of Duty can last until the next installment because of online play.

All those 3DS titles kinda make me sad since the 3DS gives me a horrible headache after playing it for 2 minutes.

That's what microsoft wants you to think. Demon's Soul is a great example of an action/rpg game made for hardcore players.
