Evolution?

I didn't say any broken fact. Anyone who claims to have been spoken to by god is claiming to be a prophet. Simple as that.

To assume that I resent people with religion is the broken fact.

Ok, back to this I guess cause I had a light bulb moment. The process of Evolution has been proven to exist in adapting organisms. But have we ever seen one species change into the next (If i'm using the word species correct. I enjoy physics more than biology)? It has proven that organisms adapt, yes....but to say evolution can make a species change from one to the other takes a small bit of faith no?

Its funny you brought that up. The first chapter is entitled "Only a Theory?" in which Dawkins explains the difference between a scientific theory and the traditional view of theories.

Theory as defined by Oxford English Dictionary

Sense 1: "A scheme or system of ideas or statements held as an explanation or account of a group of facts or phenomena; a hypothesis that has been confirmed or established by observation or experiment and is propounded or accepted as accounting for the known facts; a statement of what are held to be the general laws, principles, or causes of something known to be observed.

Sense 2: "A hypothesis proposed as an explanation; hence, a mere hypothesis, speculation, conjecture; an idea or set of ideas about something; an individual view or notion.

So, you see, the "Theory" of Evolution falls under sense 1, just as the "Theory" of Gravity does. Creationists like to use sense 2 as a way to try and debunk evolution.

Truth is, evolution has been proven, at least with enough evidence to be convicted in a court of law.

Look, people's beliefs are their own. You can believe whatever you want. Genesis, Shiva, Buddha, Flying Spaghetti Monster -- it makes no difference to me. I happen to be an atheist, but I have no compulsion to shut down churches or convert believers to my side. Life's too short and my particular determinations about the nature of the universe are not contingent on convincing people to agree with me.

I happen to think your beliefs are foolish, but I also think skinny jeans pulled down and belted around one's thighs is a dumb look too. It's not for me. (And I'm sure you feel the same about my beliefs -- I'm not bothered by that and fully expect it.) But I'm not going to randomly accost someone sporting said accoutrement in the street, nor am I going to lobby my local congressman to pass a law against it. Because it's none of my business.

Part of the mutual respect of living in a multi-cultural country is knowing when one's beliefs end and another's begins, and agreeing to disagree.

The problem is when people aren't content with this, and seem to feel their belief system is threatened or somehow weakened if they are forced to associate and tolerate people who disagree with them. I'm under no obligation to "respect" your beliefs, but I am under an obligation not to go to political war over them. If your beliefs are such that you are also compelled to use the secular political and educational systems to convert people, then we have a problem. But otherwise, live and let live.

Also you will NEVER just see one species change into another. Its all minor changes over a very long time. The larger the population the longer it takes for change to take hold in that population.

EVERY creature that has ever lived and is alive today IS a transitional form.

Look at you and your family. Are you identical? No. You are different from each other thanks to slight changes in your gene sequences. Lets say that your mom and dad are black. That makes you black under normal circumstances.

Now lets say that you and your children all have kids with white people ONLY. Over time your entire living family directly descended from you will be white under normal circumstances.

It just makes sense.

Mabrook, Jaerik's not insulting you, he's saying beliefs shouldn't contradict scientifically validated theory in the realm of education. In short, keep evolution in schools. That's it.

As for toting the Quran over the Bible... that's an even bigger derail than trying to make this thread about pokemon. You want people to have an honest discussion about it, then make another thread.

@Inuyushi: Thanks for the reply. As for believing that we came from a "puddle of ooze" or not, that's another kettle of fish. Evolution is about how species came about and how life diversifies, not how it began. So, yeah, fine by me. :)

The idea of religion isn't very dumb, but when you add the human element into the mix, then it just get's insane hai2u Westboro baptist.

Edit: let me clear that up, I am not well versed in all the religions out there. But through time there's been a ton of them I believe so the idea of 'this religion says do this so I'm a good person and won't go to a bad place' sounds good keeps people doing right instead of wrong. The problem is, people use religion as a crutch to A) convert others(killing the non-believers works) B) take control of an area through the people.

Then you've got the nuts who misinterpret the information provided, because honestly they're all wild stories with 6 headed dragons and ***, and boom you have to wait till your married to have sex(i believe the bible says get your daughter pregnant or something like that) Which promotes incessant marriages?
