I' not sure its actually that great of marketing though. Myself as an example, I don't even associate the word coke with the coca cola brand. It only means soft drink to me.
While the word coke is used here in the south quite a bit, I don't see an advantage if people don't connect the name with the product.

nah it definitely helps think of how everyone calls all tissue paper Kleenex, or take a look at Band-Aid, people call all bandages Band-Aids. It's a companies dream to end up in that position where you associate all products of that type by YOUR company name.
Sorry if I sounded over board with the 'brain washing' I didn't mean it like that. My only point was this amazing branding Coke has accomplished was limited to just mostly the south.
