The corner of Lake Borgne that funneled Katrina's surge into New Orleans is being blocked with a wall nearly two miles long and 26 feet high, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

The entire $15 billion Katrina project is due to be completed in time for next year's hurricane season.

It calls for a ring of 350 miles of linked levees, flood walls, gates and pumps to surround the city and prevent what happened on Aug. 29, 2005.

by building 700 feet thick walls 100 feet high off the coast with gates to allow ships through like that shits hard
Do you have any idea how much that would *** weigh? A one foot long segment of your 700 foot wide, 100 foot high wall could weigh somewhere around SEVEN THOUSAND TONS. That would be putting something around 7200 psi per square inch on the ground, for your entire wall. And you are talking about building them *OFF THE COAST*, in the water. Do you have any concept of what that building such a wall would do, ecologically, physically, or economically? You obviously have no effing clue what is involved. So please, just be quiet and put the pointy cap back on. *Edit* Yes, I know psi stands for per square inch. I'm guessing the person I quoted didn't. *Edit 2* *pound per square inch, /sigh

look up the wall being built around new orleans

They'll need to rebuild the wall every 10 years too? lol. Also it's 12 feet thick and 28 feet tall. It wouldn't protect them at all from a big tsunami.

True, also keep in mind that the point isn't to protect from a tsunami, it is to protect from flood surges due to hurricanes. Which are just mildly different.

This, so much.

Why can't someone build everything so that I am perfectly safe no matter what? I mean, in this day and age, there's no reason to have anything be anything less than absolute perfection. Think about it: they're rich - they can afford it. It just makes sense.

Really, the Earth has been sitting around in more or less it's present state for millions of years, and Japan is not that big of a place. I mean, with all of our engineering prowess, it really shouldn't be hard to make a building strong enough to hold completely still while the island moves underneath, right? And tsunamis? IT'S FREAKING WATER. IT'S SOFT AS ***. C'mon, that part is a joke.

Are we the only two people here that care about the lives of others??

This is the largest earthquake to ever strike Japan, and the 4th largest in recorded human history. Followed by a 30' tsunami that was also 7 times larger than anything the country had ever seen.

Both slammed directly into a nuclear power facility, and the thing stayed up. The reactor scrammed correctly. The backup generators kicked in. When the backup generators were swamped, the tertiary backups kicked in. Then they trucked in fourth-level backups. Then they fell back to the fifth level venting system, the sixth level containment pool, the 7th level containment housing...

They had a "backup plan." Something like a dozen *#$ing layers of them. And so far, there hasn't been a significant release of radiation or any significant danger to millions of people.

And if the Japanese people aren't panicking, (and they're not), I would suggest we lay off the blame when it doesn't effect us in any way and they don't really want our help, either.

That post probably has more thought put into it than all of your posts in this thread combined.

No. Why? You are protecting from the changes in tides. When you get rapid changes above the threshold of the design, the design fails. When that happens, it will break at the junctions (at least).

You have to consider:
1. Rate of change
2. Magnitude of change

Let alone center of gravity/mass.

Let alone the fact when a Tsunami rushes at the floating cities and such, and the water crashes into them, the buildings/apartments/etc will just topple into the ocean and be lost forever...

Yeah! But why stop there, might as well make a mini airport to ferry stuff in and out for the workers! Hmm, terrorists might attack, lets add some guns! Well we've gone this far, lets put so soldiers on board too, in case we need them. Hell it has an airport, lets put some fighter jets on it too! Radar? Sure. Maybe a mini hospital for the workers and soldiers!

Lol aircraft carriers

in all honestly the nuclear reactor had way more redundancies than needed. just be thankful it was designed to be above and beyond and didn't only meet bare minimum requirements.

Makes sense, if there's a Tsunami, the reactor will become the problem of another country. Problem solved!
I thought with the help of mother nature, Japan had just succeded in making these
