I generally lay down for a solid 1 hour before I fall asleep. The odd days take up to 3 or 4 hours. What has been working for me lately is to rehearse a conversation with someone that aggravated me recently. It's all just talk in my mind, so... I'm not sure if I'd call it taking to myself. May just be me...
You could also go watch the Fox News channel drone on about faux news... hehe...pun...I fell asleep in a ball on my uncomfortable chair. However, that was right after work.
I'm sure someone said it, but watching really lame movies puts my father to sleep. After watching Avatar a hundred times, he's out before the 3rd chapter... Chronicles of Riddick; really, any Vin Diesel movie.
I don't know what the situation you're trying to sleep in...is... but, light effects some hormone center thingy in your brain-case. The thingy releases the neurochemical that makes you feel awake. So, if you're trying to sleep early in the day, get some dark curtains and limit exposure to bright light. Vice-versa, if you're drowsy, and don't want to be, step outside and stare at the sun.
Anyways, good luck, sweet dreams, yada yada..
