I think there are mainly 2 types of people. You have your type who played RPGs/FFs before FFVII and don't really see it as standing out much more than any other title. Then you have those for whom FFVII was their first FF, possibly their first entry into JP RPGs entirely. These people think it's the best thing ever created and are extremely vocal about it, much to the dismay of type 1.
And there's OP who is just a ***.

Yeah, that's true. I can't un-see AC as much as I want to. So awful. @___@; (it was shiny though) He kinda got into the realm of being like QQ after he realizes that he's not Zack, but it's not *that* emo I suppose.
And Crisis Core was just... el o el Cloud.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but don't bash the game that really push Squaresoft to the pinnacle of JRPG's as well as RPG as a whole for a long *** time. FF7 was a true pioneer, and the story is unmatched bar none imho.

Let us view the facts...about 90% of today's FF players started with FFVII. The reasoning for this is purely because people can't think for themselves so they must follow...Now! FFVII is not a bad game...and in my own opinion it lacks depth...I found myself dozing through most of the game because of this...with very very few engaging moments...I just don't get the hype...Cloud always seems to be on downers...I can't do this I can't do that blah blah blah blah! Red XIII was the only humane and sensible character with a good head on his shoulders...and he was a kitty thing that talked...
