You learn, trust me. Dark Souls is all about learning the world and the most effective ways to deal with each type of enemy either 1 vs 1 or vs a group. It's not as hard game as people say it is but more just that is punishes you for being sloppy or just not using your head with more than a slap on the wrist.

Edit: The blacksmith is kinda important so killing him would be a bad idea.
ah well i've been trying to kill him and its not working lol
this is pretty *** dumb lol talk is A button, i come up to some fatass sitting on a wall and immediately after convo it swings on him too

Is A the attack button on Xbox as well as talk then? o.O PS3 uses the shoulder buttons for everything weapon related minus attack items so unless the controller is messed up that shouldn't happen...
Check controller options, maybe you can change the layout

pc with an xbox controller, I dont see anyway to remap the buttons to controller.. i didnt change them at all and the right trigger used to do heavy attacks but trigger does nothing now and I keep attacking npcs without doing anything >.> pretty sure i cant even go on now because the fat guy and the blacksmith both wont let me by

As for the trigger being weird I'm not sure on that.
rightmousebutton does heavy attack, nothing on my controller will <_>
My settings for actions are
Right weapon attack - H
Right weapon heavy attack - U
Left weapon block - L.Shift
Left weapon parry - Tab
And I'm assuming Action/Gesture is talk so that's Q
I don't see any settings specifically for controllers so check if that's what you have there maybe.
