To be born a samurai you had to have a samurai mother. So yes, half of the samurai were women.
When Samurai women fought they usually used a naganata*. This BTW is why XI's samurai are the second best polearm user in the game.
Not all samurai were warriors**. All Samurai were expected to fight if needed.
*Naginatajutsu is a women's sport in Japan today. They are often matched against kendoka. One year for Seattle's Bon Odori a naginatajutsu team was brought over to demonstrate the sport and its traditions. Matches were fought between themselevs and also against Seattle kendoka who had never fought against naginata. The results were predictable.
**Some samurai were accountants. Personally I have a hard time picturing a samurai accountant.
